there’s a difference between random and having to guess right to block
and what other games do you play where there isn’t a random factor where ONE input can give you atleast a free 1/3 of your opponent’s health. and how well do you do in those games?
and you’re the only one around here who actually cares about mvc3.
and who are all these people not knowing the difference between random and easy?
and not all fighting games have a random factor… and those are the games people say they respect… but won’t play them cuz “they’re too hard”
alex if you top 32… i’ll buy you a klondike bar
sparda, do you play online at all on supercade (on PC)?
Would you be down to play 3rd Strike, ST, Alpha, or some Garou?
don’t play online games
Offense isn’t even that good in Marvel 3 because there’s no such thing as blockstrings in a game where you can guard cancel and do ABCS BBCSuper and kill a character. The only blockstrings are against aerial opponents and they can just pushblock you out and wait for you to do something while they are grounded. The game turns into a turtle fest when its 3v1 because the 3 character team has to run away or they get XFactor’d to death because the 2A was unsafe due to Guard Cancel.
Turtling when you are up 2 characters being a legit strategy is fucking stupid. Only against Phoenix is this reasonable in the game. You’ll never see a marvel 2 player time you out with three to one characters left unless they want to make you look real fucking garbage. And even then they could just blow you up with a mixup you probably can’t block anyway if they wanted to make you look free.
TL;DR Xfactor Guard Cancel.
There’s almost no true randomness in games, Platinum’s items and Super Turbos random damage variance on specials are some of the only things. There’s just things people consider more “random” 50-50 vortexes from some characters, block, strike or throw the basis of Street Fighter, or dark phoenix teleport with a trap. A proper randomness scale for games people actually play seriously would be something like Chess to Poker. All fighting games are closer to chess because there are almost no factors outside of your control. Even in Marvel which has a significant amount of “random” factors there is no true randomness. If you aspire to eliminate all “random” elements than that’s fine. But even in poker tournament results have some consistency to them in that the better players will come out on top given enough hands. That’s how so many people make a living playing poker. The two main reasons why Marvel is more “random” is because a clean hit done by someone who has developed his team and combos will do 100% to a character, and because of the ease of catching and killing assist characters. Both of these helped and made easier by the use of X-factor. That being said there is nothing “wrong” with the way Marvel is now. You can dislike somethings about it like X-factor but that’s all just opinion. It’s actually one of the most balanced games in that just about everyone minus a few characters are broken. Broken games with powerful characters tend to be fun, sort of like how high level play of Hokuto no Ken is dumb it’s also incredibly fun. If you don’t like the way Marvel is than playing another game like SF4 is fine or if that’s to random you could play another game or if that’s to random you could play Chess. That being said I would like to see some changes to Marvel and I’d also like to see sets played 3 out of 5 to mitigate the “randomness” of a 2 out of 3. Also I’m not talking shit about chess, I love chess. I was the 5th-6th grade Middleton Chess Club champion back in '03.
The games I play now in order of seriousness with success rate are
MVC3 (I do pretty well)
AH3 (I do fairly well)
BBCS2 (No one else plays but Dooku and I have no matchup experience outside of 3 characters, and I have no objective measure of my skill)
SF4 (I understand how to play the game thanks to it being the game I got into the scene with and I can still beat people who don’t understand fundamentals well enough like at the Happy Wok tourney, but I don’t play it currently and stopped progressing awhile ago, I intend to pick up this game after evo and become at least on par with Devin and Munny after some work. This is dependent on Dooku playing this game seriously however.
Top players at one game have the skill set to become top players at all similar games so I imagine I’ll consistently be one of the best in the region in any typical 2d fighter that I dedicate time to. The only type of fighting game I couldn’t be a top player in without months upon months of work is 3d games like Tekken and SC. I don’t know much about 3d fighters so while I understand 2d, in order to seriously be a competent player at 3d games I’d probably have to put in at least 1000 hours of study and play. I’ve only been playing seriously since around this time or a little after in 2009 and I would estimate I’ve played / studied (watch, read, etc) 2d games about 2000-3000 hours, which is about 4-6 hours a day. It’s gotten me to a pretty competent level and I’ve played more in these 2 years than some people will play in 10. My goal is to be one of the best in the world and in order to reach that I imagine that I have a few more years of playing 4-6 hours a day to get to a level I’d feel happy with and either more hours or more years in order to truly be one of the best.
Also I guess it’s a shame that more people don’t care about Marvel but I’m by no means the only one who cares
LOL it is true that no one really gives a shit about mvc3 anymore. It gets played a lot because u can play the game for like a week or so and already be good. So when people are playing the game almost anyone can just be like “oh i know how to play that” and then sit down and do ok even against really decent players… I think that’s the only appeal to the game. I only wanna play kof 13 right now anyway. Well kof in general. I don’t like kof 13 as much as 2k2um but I can deal with that. I just wish people didn’t suck so bad but at least a couple people are actually learning shit on their own now.
ROFL, the new generation of capcom garbage really does make people dillusional
Winning a sf4 tournament in madison doesn’t mean shit. I won the sf4 tournament last time i went there. It’s like a complete joke.
Holy shit this sentence makes me feel old. lolol
KoF is stealing you from us, Dan! I’m curious to know what makes you think 2k2um is better than 13.
It is a joke when did I say it wasn’t, all it means is I’m not horrific at the game. Drunk syxx posts are fun though so I should just let it rock
I think when most people say random when not actually referring to a randomized element of a game they mean that something is too fast to react to reliably or too ambiguous, or a combination of both.
Phoenix Traps and Teleports are said to be random but that’s not exactly true, if you do them the same way 100 times they will happen the same way those 100 times. MvC3 has a lot of very ambiguous situations. Most fighting games do at a high level.
But when those situations lead directly into losing a character or a match outside of other, more strategic or “fair” situations, then you have a game that makes people upset.
I won my 8th grade geography bee.
I’m a top player.
Really, MvC3 discussion?
I’m going back to DDR.
Hit me up when Teddy Roosevelt is back in office.
New players are lulz.
Foot, you said 3S:O drops end of summer, right? I haven’t been able to find a confirmed date anywhere.
syxx i will gladly play any kof with you if you would make it down again
Thar she blows. Ultimate MVC3 for 40 bones.
Not gonna lie, I’m sort of curious to see how Firebrand plays out.
ill buy it. i’m gonna make a pact to not complain about it at all either.
Yeah i’ll be on this day one. I like the change to the lifebars/meter. That giant X is a bit distracting though…
I wonder if anyone’s done any detective work to see if the damage has been reduced or level 3 XF time reduced. They show firebrand using level 3 XF.
I’ll play KOF. Where’s the best place to go to learn some noob stuff for 2K2? Just youtube?
It was nothing but Soul Calibur players, and this really weird girl and her boyfriend who both just mashed. I totally agree. Alex, Mateo, myself and Bridgett were the only ones who knew anything about how to play SF out of 12 or so signups… no one there liked 4 at all, in fact the only time it was on was when the tourney was being run. The rest of the time I had 3s hooked up. xD It was a fun time either way
I have kof2k2um on ps2 but have never taken it seriously or played it a lot. I have however played the original kof2k2 on neo geo emulators since the day it came out. I plan on being at the Tracks Tavern tourny on August 6th for 3s and SSF4, but I’d totally be down to learn/play casuals in 2k2um if anyone is gonna be there
Andrew, 3s online is supposed to come out August 23rd I think (and I’m seriously considering buying a ps3 for it)… if you ever wanna come here to play, Jaron and I still play regularly. I live in Madison now. This Sunday we played 45 matches over 5 hours xD
