Microsoft Windows 10 thread

This new OS has somehow made my pos laptop run shit that would usually blow it up.

There’s a folder I have now called C:\Windows.old, which I’m guessing is Win7, while Win10 made its own Windows folder. The old folder is just the old Windows programs and data, none of the files from user accounts. If it needed to copy the entire Win7 just to rename the folder, then that’s pretty damn unnecessary. But it’s Microsoft so I’m going to believe it did that.

I tried to do a recovery on my Linux system with a Knoppix disc, but when I looked at the hard drive in GParted, both my / and /home partitions were gone. The entire space was marked as unallocated. I tried to do a data recovery, but no luck. There was, however, a new partition for just over 800MB with the “diag” flag that I’m guessing Win10 created, by shortening the Windows partition to give it space, but that also may be what bonked GRUB’s ability to load Linux. So for anyone who’s already got a dual-boot system and hasn’t updated to Win 10, beware of this shit.

This only bothers me in that it happened. I only gave Linux about 40GB of space so that I can keep my stuff in Windows to use in both systems when I want, so the real inconvenience is that I’ll have to likely re-install Mint so I can redo the partitions and GRUB. But I don’t wanna. This laptop is too old for newer Linux that I can’t install ATI’s graphics drivers on, so I have to install Precise and then do a LONG ASS UPDATE. I’m gonna need some booze to ease that pain. God damn Windows.

whats this about losing files when you upgrade? shouldnt it like… definitely not do that?

That’s why I havent upgraded yet. I know for a fact that there is way for shit to get lost in translation, and im waiting for that to happen, and said issues to be patched before I care about 10.

No. It’s only free for one year. Afterwards, it’s $120.

Also there’s the option in the system settings to revert back to Win 7/Win 8.1 within the first month of upgrading (at the small chance you don’t like it). There’s really no excuse not to upgrade though. Not only is it better than Win 8.1 by a mile, the performance gains over 7/8 are evident almost immediately. Chrome doesn’t lag nearly as much for me now.

I sorta wanna upgrade but dunno

There’s a lot of things to like. The Edge browser is actually pretty good and cleans the slate of IE once and for all. I’m thinking of uninstalling Firefox and making it my secondary.

The Action Center shows all kinds of notifications, from social media, email, system issues… you name it.

There’s baked in Miracast support, with the option to cast your PC screen to other devices. You can also stream Xbox One to your PC or tablet, in the event someone else is using the TV.

The Windows Store is better, and cross platform apps is going to be a very big deal on all Windows 10 devices. The app selection for Win 8.1 was/is trash, but with Windows 10 they’re making it easy for devs to port Android/iOS apps to the platform. A native Twitter app was released the same day as Win 10. I’m thinking a lot of companies are going to start pushing out official native apps so the only options aren’t the unofficial third party apps that were on Win 8.1. Hoping Google gets on board this time.

My only complaints is that my display calibration resets with every restart, and I’m trying to figure out why. Also experienced issues with a couple apps not working properly but they’re pushing out updates soon to fix them.

I would say you should wait 1-2 weeks, let the updates for both W10 and programs flow in. But there’s no harm with updating immediately either.

Gonna update my tablet as a test run…there’s nothing on it really.
Then do a clean install on my desktop after doing a backup.

I think I’ll do this on my laptop before my desktop.

Wait, so I have to reserve it? Why can’t I just download it when I damn well please? What bullshit is this?

Tiers muthafucka!! Shouldve hopped on the tech build wagon.

W10 is bangin right now. Loving the menu and action center.

Over 14 million people have W10 now, so the reservations go by quickly.

After I installed Windows 10 I had to reinstall Chrome for some reason, but Microsoft Egde is not half bad tbh.

They just don’t want a server meltdown where the whole world decides to download at the same time, fail at it, and ruin the OS’ reputation.

There are probably some video game companies that should try to learn from that model.

Either way, I’m here waiting like a sucker and I’m going to pout about it. I just wanna give it a spin while it’s still the weekend.

Google is your friend. There is a clear-cut method on how to bypass the wait. Hell, I JUST did it half an hour ago to begin downloading W10 on my laptop.

The queue could reportedly take days, weeks or even months according to somebody from MS.

Ah, looks like it has the option to just update the PC instead of downloading all the files separately onto a DVD or USB. Tits. I’ll try and let you know but so far it’s going fairly slow. Guess I can take this time to do some work.

Every person has told me this is annoying to do, but this is how I am doing it, as well. I dont wanna deal with the hassle of trying to locate my CD-Key, and all my asshole friends steal my USB drives, and I’m fairly certain my blu ray burner is dead or I just forgot to ever plug it in when I built my pc.

Just spent all day clearing up space on my SDD (thanks for taking up nearly 200gb, bitcoin nonsense!) for this upgrade, can’t fucking wait.

Is it hacked? As in can people get it to free forever And not just free for 1 year.

cortana cant do a god damn thing except throw bing errors. disappointing.
