Michael Bay to direct Transformers 4

I saw the movie - my spoiler review

The problem I see is Michael Bay (MB) likes to prematurely shoot his wad. The movie starts off well, I was genuinely finding some of the jokes funny (Silicon Valley dude (Wahlberg’s best friend/partner/employee) is pretty much playing the same character he plays in the TV series, which I have no problem with because he is great). Then MB starts using his low shots, he over does it, to the point it feels cliched along with the slowmo and helicopters …it almost feels patented.

The first indication of the movie falling apart is as soon as the action starts, MB editing just sucks, there are too many time skips. Example house in the middle of nowhere, they are being chased by the blackops guys on the dirt track and crop fields, when suddenly they are in the middle of a freeway, like wtf just happened?! Meanwhile gigantic explosions have been going off. I was like, dude we are just 20 minutes into the movie and you’ve already had 5 explosions that take up the entire screen. There is no restraint, the action needs to be built up throughout the movie rather than feel like he is aiming for some sort of quota. We haven’t even got to LockDown’s grenade at this point …holyshit that was overkill but it looked awesome admittedly!

Next problem is the script, interaction between father and daughter’s (Aussie/Irish he can’t decide on an accent) boyfriend is just dreadful . eg. “I’m not here to save your daughter, I’m here to save my girlfriend.” I would have thrown him off that spaceship there and then.

Kermode was not joking about the ludicrous characterization of American government in the form of the Secretary of State compared to the Chinese, he is a fumbling buffoon, in no reality would someone like him have that job, he is just an absurd caricature that isn’t funny. Which brings me to my next issue, comedy relief. There are too many characters intended to bring comedic relief, most films will just have one character with the lead throwing in a couple of one liners, but since they killed off their comedian in the first half hour of the movie other characters need to fill role, the thing is, the movie doesn’t need it. So far the movie is at its best when it is taking itself seriously. The jokes in the script from here just get worse and worse, I’m wondering now if it simply down to delivery or the Silicon Valley actor wrote his own jokes.

Next noticeable problem is forcing humans into the scenario, Optimus Prime gets his shit pushed in by Lockdown, yet the daughter decides to climb into the vehicle which Optimus is laying on top of to give him a pep talk, only to get whisked away into Lockdown’s ship (which looked badass), and of course father and boyfriend have to go get her. I know teenagers are meant to be rebellious but FFS, daddy said run into the field, not run underneath the giant robot that just got it’s ass kicked and is now about to get curb stomped out of existence.

Product placement flips table not even worth talking about, I was just shaking and audibly sighing every time some product was shoved in my face.

The movie feels stretched as soon as they leave for Hong Kong, I think it was pretty much at this point during the battle in HongKong I got bored with the action, and Dinobots appearance didn’t even perk me up. The final battle felt very rushed, and I felt Lockdown deserved a better death but it did make more sense Optimus Prime needing assistants to defeat him. Saying that, the premise for the next movie sounds interesting.

Overall, best Transformers movie out of all the them by a long way. Kinda had similar pacing flaws that I saw in the Raid 2 in that the story starts out well enough, then you have this loud high intensity action sequence then it suddenly puts the handbrake on before then going into another long and loud high intensity action sequence. This movie despite it’s many flaws is tolerable as a mindless action movie, kids will probably really enjoy it, and some parents will be thankful they get their kids to shut up for almost 3hrs. Michael Bay is moving in the right direction, but needs to work more on his scripts and editing, and where to dial up the action.

D+

Forgot to mention, the soundtrack wasn’t bad, two tracks that stood out, AutoBot Reunite and LockDown

Hey all, I’ve been pondering this, and I think, besides mook TFs, and the Wreckers(more to the long list of casualties to that unit; be at peace, you three), no big name Autobots actually died in AoE.
(jury’s out on Sideswipe, he wouldn’t ask what’s happening, he’d start shooting/slicing up back no questions asked, lol)

How, you may ask?

Well, Ratchet got his spark REMOVED from his body, not extinguished. Look closely. Knowing how he and Lockdown go back, that may yet end up even worse.

And for that matter, we didn’t see Lockdown’s go out, either. Yeah, he got bisected, but I didn’t see any lights go out, did you?

These are TEMPORARY WOUNDS in IDW stuff; who’s to say the LA stuff will be much different?
They’re most likely not dead.

They’ll be back, I feel.

Maybe I should give this movie a second look in its entirety. Saw the first hour and kinda just wrote if off after that. Will go and attempt to watch it on discount days with a neutral mindset. But from my point of view I wasted my 14 bucks.

Are you serious about this?

Ratchet got his spark straight-up pierced like a canape on a toothpick and his body melted to rubble.

And unless your name is Megatron, no villain is getting a second chance from death.

So quit your yapping and fanfic theories.

Completely.

It didn’t go out when Lockdown stored it in his weapon-container-thing.

Fair enough.

…Is this a road you wish to go down?

“China will protect Hongkong at all costs!” was the most crass example of product placement that I’ve seen in my life.

Nicola Peltz turned out juuuuuust fine.

For those interested int he BD Release, check this out. BluRay.com has a listing of all the editions.

IMO, the Best Buy steel book wins with that cover art. I just hope it comes with a digital copy.

Just in recently, folks. http://www.reddit.com/r/transformers/comments/2evtyb/guys_sideswipe_is_officially_confirmed_to_have/

…I’m truly upset about this one, in all honesty. Sideswipe is my boy.

When all is said and done, I really hope that something like [details=Spoiler]the final scene of TFP Predacons Rising[/details] happens. The Movie-verse Cybertronians are some of my favorite characters in anything.(ESPECIALLY considering the depth that they have the benefit of developing in the IDW tie-in stuff, mmph)

…Until then?

I just watched this. I had a fucked year so I missed it in theaters. Wow this movie was very critical of modern America. A skilled engineer in the struggle, CIA guy screwed by his country, the 1% shipping jobs to Chinese… It’s almost a black comedy, even though all the “jokes” are reality for Americans. Does the movie title have multiple meanings? I guess it was trying to appeal to China?

EDIT: The decayed movie house scene was clearly a reference to tentpoles like TF movies no longer being made for America. At least how I interpreted it.

You see some examples of good Bay action pieces here and there, but that final act is draining, just a blur of running and shooting and whoa whoa whoa! and splosions. DotM had the same problem, but the payoff was OP getting revenge for Sentinel’s betrayal. AoE’s final battle just felt like going through the motions to get the main bad guy and save the day. Lockdown was barely a villain really.

Fuck TF1 I’ll always hate that movie, this movie probably had the best portrayals of TFs as characters, though they’re still written as background objects and that isn’t gonna change. Not very good but a guilty pleasure, love mah oldschool cartoon movie adaptations.

At least Lockdown had some interesting lines. Briefly touching on his connection to The Creators and their purpose for creating the TFs, and then having Optimus sporadically allude to their existence, while both sides take a shit on the urban environment is pretty funny… but mostly pretty fucking sad lol.

I know you guys love TF, but we buying Michael Bay DVDs? Really?

Yup. I liked it, so I bought it.

Oh, okay then… Carry on.

Movie is terrible

Happened to check out the special features. I am actually really surprised how much practical effects were used in this movie. That disc really adds to the technical aspect of the movie. The magnet scene, a lot of the items dropped and moved were actually real. One of the most awesome yet extremely dumbass explosions of the movie (Lockdown’s Descent at the end of the movie) was actually done practically. Also, the guy that played Irish Shia LaBeauf did a fair amount of driving in the movie. Like Bay’s work or not, definitely worth checking out, especially if you bought it.

Another thing that I realized, is that Ehren Kruger is the reason there are problems with this movie. I really hope that TF5 gets another writer.

*All of them
If Bay can help it. Literally, I’m not even making this up.
Relevant, in reference to Transformers 2007: "The Scorponok sand explosion; told them to not stop running no matter what."
Yeah.

“if only they put as much time justifying the plot as they did with having sex with a minor”

lol at pandering to chinese audiences :joy:
