I first brought up the $300 bet a month ago, and the matches don’t take place until March!!!
And I’m only bringing up the $$$$ because DG continues to just look past what I’m really trying to say, and keeps talking about proving himself, and shutting me up, and his honor, and whatever the fuck else he keeps talking about, and it seems to me that if he’s gonna ignore my points, and go after chivalry and bravery, etc. what’s wrong with a friendly wager.
At the end of the day, if he wins, then he gets his satisfaction and whatever else he’s always foaming at the mouth about, and if I win, I at least get $300 for subjecting myself to this kind of stupidity.
Most of the current popular games we’re trying to build around aren’t that old…XI, NGBC, Tenka, MIRA. The first 3 came out in 2004 in Japanese arcades, but have only been on PS2 since 2005. Two Years. MIRA came out on both PS2 and Arcade last year. 1/2 a year.
Of course, there’s also Garou and KOF 98 which are older than GGX but they were released at the wrong time. Too late to take advantage of the mid 90’s arcade peak and too early to take advantage of word-of-mouth of the internet.
Stuff like Arcana Heart wouldn’t be half as known and popular in the US if it wasn’t for the internet.
Guilty Gear also enjoyed a good US PS2 port in GGXX in early 2003…just enough for it to reach an American audience.
The main SNK games NEVER had a US PS2 port until KOF XI and NGBC just MONTHS ago.
NGBC alone became like 3x more popular on SRK after the US port.
Mexico has tons of active arcades. We don’t. Therefore, PS2 releases and the internet are far more important to US.
yeah, a lot of people have certainly noticed that dark geese has a peculiar way of talking about these things…it kind of reminds me of this guy i know who plays all the “white knight” characters in fighters ( he likes the irony ). then again i think i understand where you’re coming from now and why that sounds a bit scrubbish - talk of things like chivalry and bravery, honor or whatever, is a half skip and a jump away from calling people “cheap” in fighters, which is certainly a trait that resembles the mental barriers josh talks about in that first post.
i’m just of the mindset that more numbers are needed, and stronger players are required, to fill the gaps we have at these tournaments. personally i can really only make it to a couple of events a year - C3 being the obvious one, NEC and evo east definite possibilities - but if everybody took it upon themselves to at least put the effort in to just show up and play their hardest like geese and a select few others do, i think things will start to change.
that is of course notwithstanding the argument that things like mms and exhibitions between good players for big cash that are put on the big screen will draw in new players ( inevitably those also end up on youtube, which makes unknowns go, “hmm, interesting game, maybe i should try it” ), but yeah, first things first, the community definitely has a lot to work on.
yeah, the Mexico argument is kind of redundant - tons of central and south america players, not to mention ALL of asia, pretty much rape the GGPO server traffic nightly - it’s gotten to the point where almost 400,000 matches have been played, almost 2 years worth of matches, within the span of its release - so obviously internet access is not the issue. the issue at hand is if the games have accessibility, then the player base should make a conscientious effort to streamline things a little.
That was actually my point. EVERYONE has internet access. Saying the internet is responsible for the growth of those games but doesnt help yours makes no sense. Lets be honest; while we all like to support the original companies, who here has an original marvel? CVS2? Accessibility for DC or PS games isn’t an issue.
I have DC copies for both MvCs and a PS2 CvS2. But that’s not point.
Unless they’re a Marvel player, no one has a DC anymore (and even amongst the Marvel crowd there are been tons of DCs worn out or destroyed by Marvel play over the last 7 years as well). Therefore, a US PS2 release is absolutely necessary to spark interest in American players. Arcana is probably the sole exception and people have already mentioned how much of a miracle that game’s scene has been.
I wasn’t saying that Mexico has no internet access. I’m saying that it’s just not as vital to their scene as to US, because even without the internet there are local arcades everywhere. Not to mention that Mexico is smaller and has a far more centralized population.
The US is bigger, completely spread out, and has virtually no arcades outside of Cali, Texas, Florida, and NY. Therefore, the internet is of paramount importance in the building and organization of a scene in America.
well its funny, i was talking to a couple of the south american players last night on ggpo and there seems to be this weird preconceived notion that NA/US players either all hate KOF / are capcom-based players exclusively, hate mexico / south american gamers for not speaking the language, et al. it’s also kind of weird how gunsmith who runs orochinagi showed up and apparently his name rings huge bells down there as one of the biggest supporters for SNK high level play, even though he’s stationed way off in britain and the forums for that site havent seen regular usage in a while albeit the front page and site content being very nice.
anywhoos:
more USA heads should definitely begin to look into GGPO KOF '98. it’s a tad saddening for me when i have to go over to the vampire savior or SFA2 rooms ( nothing against those games, in fact i love both ) for the sole reason that i can barely connect to international players of varying skill levels because of distance and latency and because the chat will be absolutely flooded with languages i can’t even begin to understand ( is there any way GGPO could maybe come with a translator / babelfish implement of some kind? )
and apparantly some people seem to have forgotten 2002-2004 when Fierce Slash was around, and at Evo 2k4 when the “Revolution” was attempted there(I still have those tapes actually, UnCauzi, lol)
the SNK community has been disorganized for a LONG time, and it’s not just because there’s no arcades
