Ren! Discuss.
Mmmkay, I figured it was time for another installment of Strats No One Pays Attention To, this time for my favorite character in the game.
I think Ren is top tier. Why? Well, the most important part is her strongest weapon: EX Ice Blade. This move is fast, hurts quite a bit, and most importantly… you cannot breakfall it until you hit the ground. That last bit’s the important one. I have a feeling that this move might get nerfed in the future, which would entirely kill Ren’s game, but they’ve had three patches without touching it so I think it’s safe for now. EX Ice Blade will connect off ANY of Ren’s bufferable normals. Any of them. When Ren has circuit, look out. A single landed hit will mean major life gone.
Aside from her EX Ice Blade, Ren has the advantage of being virtually untouchable while crouching (turns into a cat, nya). Her 2+B will knock them off the ground. Mixing up 2+C (doesn’t move forward, unbufferable) and 3+C (moves forward, bufferable) is good for long-range poking. Ren’s not very good at air combos, at least not in my opinion; her launcher can be flipped out of way too easily and the timing is too tight to make it worth it. On the other hand, Ren’s short and fast jump means she can crossup and harass people with repeated double airdash 5+C, IAD 5+C and crap.
Some BnB combos I use…
-
2+A > 2+B > B Ice Blade, add in 2+A as necessary. This combo doesn’t deal as much damage, but it will juggle them up and set them up for an EX Ice Blade whether they recover or not (it’s actually easier if they do)
-
2+A > 2+B > 5+B > B Ice Blade, add in 2+A to get Ren about one step away, otherwise they can flip out before the Ice Blade hits. This one can be setup into EX Ice Blade, but only if you’re close to a wall, otherwise the pushback’s too great.
-
3+C > C Cat. If it trips, great, you get to release the Neco-Arc unmolested. If it counterhits, even better, it’ll combo. If not, oh well, it might come out quickly enough unless you’re fighting Shiki Tohno or Nanaya. You can do this off a 2+B too but it leaves them a bit too close for comfort. Neco-Arc has this annoying trajectory that covers the entire vertical area in front of Ren. You can do some fucked up shit with this, like counter someone’s aircombo while being hit, EX Ice Blade and throw them into the rocket. Remember that the rocket juggles up for an untechable juggle, so air combo like crazy afterwards.
EX Ice Blade Setups:
Okay! So you landed an EX Ice Blade. What kind of crazy shit can you do after one?
- another EX Ice Blade
- A Ice Blade
- B Ice Blade (you can’t super cancel this, remember)
- 3+C
- 5+C
- A Ice Blade super cancelled into EX Ice Blade
- jump, 5+C > double jump > 5+C > airdash > 5+C/throw
- air EX Ice Blade
- (Blood Heat) Raging Demon
In general, you don’t want to blow your circuit doing repeated Ice Blades, unless you want to show off; the hits deal subsequently less and less damage. The main point of EX Ice Blade is that it can’t be airblocked and is relatively difficult to shield, and you can hit them afterwards for free. So what you want to do is to keep them up there and reset the combo counter to kill the damage scaling.
The most effective (and practical) method I’ve found was to simply do a three-fierce air combo (use airdash and doublejump). Ren will land before the enemy; it’s up to them whether they tech or not, though most will do so out of instinct. Upon a tech, just wait a split second and do another EX Ice Blade. This will restart the combo counter at 0 and hit for full damage, at which point you can… repeat the process again. If they don’t tech out, do another three-fierce air combo. It’ll say Invalid, but you win either way.
If you want to be flashy, you can use air EX Ice Blade to reset the combo counter. EX Ice Blades recover pretty much instantly, and they can be teched, so once you’re in Heat go nuts. Tiger knee air EX Ice Blade is also good for countering anti-airs like Sion and Arcueid’s uppercuts, and anti-air normals like Walachia’s 6+C and Nrvnqsr’s 2+C, both of which normally have high priority and must be otherwise shielded/shield countered.
You can’t really end air combos effectively with her airthrow anymore, since you can’t combo after them, but if you jump low enough you can land before they do from an air throw and resume the combo from there; burningvigor’s combo video shows this tactic in action, although with the tiny damage her air throw deals, in all practicality if you had that much circuit you’re probably better off resetting her EX Ice Blades.
One thing to remember is that while her normal Ice Blades are persistent, her EX Ice Blade is not. Normal Ice Blades will trade with freaking everything and counterhit like a bitch. Even if you hit Ren out of one, you’ll probably get hit right back. EX Ice Blades come out near-instantly, but have 0 invincibility frames; you can be throw, hit, and even Ice Bladed out of them in a mirror match.
That’s about it for now, I think.
