think of it like a person joining a conversation late, right around the time a guy says “so i sucked his dick”. of course the person is going to be confused and think, man this guy is gay. but little does the person know hes really quoting a conversation he overheard.
thats how 90% of the newcomers are. They stroll in, without any background details, and just join the conversation. Personally, i beat off at night to these newbs getting upset at my jokes. do you really want to take my happiness away from me? I work 40-45 hours a week and take 14 credits of class. All the fun i have in my life are these newbs and their upsettedness ( i made that up). Please uncle havoc, let me make fun of them. PLEASE.
(DISCLAIMER: FOR YOU RETARDED NEWBS YES THIS IS A JOKE YOU DUMB FUCKS)
I understand that… I disagree somewhat though. I think it’s in all of our best interests to see growth in the scene. I understand not everybody plays the games as hard as the next guy. But even to just have a place to meet up, chill, and fuck around on a monthly basis, until somebody stops talking and actually finds a place that will let us do it for free, we need to produce numbers to make it worth the while of any business to allow us to take over their venue for a day. The most outspoken people about the lack of C3 lock-ins has been you three. Why do you think they went away? Not enough people… simple as that.
So, we’re all in this. We all have a stake in getting the community bigger. If it’s for increase in competition to get better… If it’s to have one more person to chill with… If it’s to have one more person to pay venue fee, so we have someplace to go… whatever. If not making random jokes to make a random new guy feel uncomfortable, results in that person sticking around, it’s better for all of us.
If were looking for a place that let us hold lock-ins for free its not going to be a business. Its going to be a school or community center. Actually I spoke with Montgomerry college directors about holding a room. However, the twist is that we would have to manage the room. In other words people bring there own tv’s and equipment. I think that’s how it is, if there is ever a free C3 it will bring everything or you will not have anything! If people motioned to me they were goona do this I would press for it, however I have realized there really isn’t too much motivation except from a small few to move the scene.
In regards to new people bring em on. I just be myself and so far that has worked. As regards to making jokes, I think its fine. Some people might have problems but I doubt they would leave from random jokes from the randoms. I’m just saying we should conduct ourselves like we always have. The people who are really motivated to keep playing and understand what competition is; they will stick around for sure. Aside from the lovable Nken and his terrible jokes.
I think since sinsation I have personally met about 10 really interested players. unfortunately the rest I can tell will be weaded out, for good reason I hope. Every single one of the players was motivated to go out of there way to find comp or get better. Havoc, you have to realize not everyone who plays the games is goona see SF4 the way we do. Those who did not already make some attempt to find community, wont, its that simple.
I understand that, but if they “make an attempt to find a community”, and when they find that community, they get hit with 45356245 bacon jokes, say “wtf”, and leave, who is that good for?
I don’t think our community is in any position to be selective with who we “allow” in. There shouldn’t be some arbitrary barrier. Like, if you can’t take these horrible jokes, we don’t want ya! That’s retarded.
Like I said… most of you just don’t get what Havoc is trying to say. You’re missing the bigger picture. One important group dynamic is ease of entry. You guys have imposed a very low ease of entry on yourselves. Maybe you want that? Maybe you don’t want new players to come in and challenge you in your holy games?
Since I started posting here, I’ve noticed very few of you understand how group dynamics completely define the way the group is seen by outsiders. Clearly, Havoc does… but then again he’s one of the few of you that has actually played against me. That probably has something to do with it.
Oh… and you guys don’t have to complain about having a place to play. UMBC has 3 360s, a bunch of PS3s and PS2s, Wiis, a bunch of TVs, pool tables, chess tables, card tables, etc. Lots of good fighter players come out Wednesday night too, but then again it gets pretty crowded.
lol well the funny thing is you dont have the slightest idea of what we get or not, you just have this assumption that we care about the scene and keep it in regard in a manner that someone else might. Apparently it’s you guys who are kind of ignoring us because you’re appealing to our supposed sense of community responsibility that just isnt there and really won’t be. There isnt an inherent benefit to us, not even in a small residual way. Games are an escape from the grind, not a whole 'nother one to start at 5:01(metaphorically speaking anyway, not really related to the previous stuff but alot of you try to turn this into a grind)
haha I see what your saying and I hope that people can behave themselves.
No being selective is stupid and actually you would want (for the most part) to make friends with the people you play with. Competition or not.
As for the fellas and the bacon jokes. yeah stop it. Bacon lust needs to end now. look i love bacon just as much maybe more for reasons untold. But people arn’t going to get a 2 year old joke… lets come up with new things. So people who are new can understand what the hell you guys are talking about. Cause right now people are scratching there heads wondering why there is a bunch of crazy BK goers on SRK. originality please. Bacon is for the wilford brimleys of the world not MD/VA.
I know that you guys get it, and I know that you guys don’t care. I’m not really trying to appeal to any sense of community responsibility. I’m trying to get you to see A) this attitude is one reason your beloved lock-ins are no more, and B) while you guys are cool in person, online you’re just a shitty comedy team.
If for no other reason, the jokes should just stop because they’re bad.
phrost, why are you so concerned? What makes you so certain your reason for being here is more worthy than say mine? How do you even correlate “we dont need to consciously look for new people” with “JUST PLAY ONLINE!”? Your argument is attaching your conceptions of what “should be” and applying them to people you dont know or understand, unfortunately the world isnt that linear…
A) I went to lockins pretty literally “when I could”, then they stopped, my attititude having not one thing to do with it
B) Most of our posts aren’t supposed to be amusing to anyone who isnt already amused, so its not like the intent is really ever lost, which makes it boil down to"I dont like it, stop", and I think you know how that turns out.
I’m not saying you are the reason they shut down. They stopped because there weren’t enough people there. So… turning new people away from the scene through incessant nincompoopery would be a hindrance to ever getting them back. If we clearly need more people to get them to run, how is turning new people off to the scene supposed to help that?
