Matador Video Thread

Hello Vega masters. I just starting playing Vega about a week ago. I’ve always been in awe with his style, plus anyone that can combo into a throw is cool in my book.

I’m not here to say I’m a great Vega, but I’ve got some matches from 2 days ago. I’ve got some skills thanks to watching all of your videos and reading your tips. Now I ask, can you help me out with some things I can work on to improve my Vega? Here are some of my favorite matches… one vs an Ibuki, one vs a Guile and then a series against my friend that plays Dhalsim. All tips criticism whatever is appreciated. I’ll contribute to the board once I have more experience, but right now I’m in super learning mode. Thanks and I cannot wait until the new Vid compilation thread is ready. Really looking forward to that!

Just a forewarning… vid quality is mediocre, but audio is pretty good.

needs moar walldives

OK :coffee:

I didn’t find a lot of new stuff on the Honda matchup. But still:

Honda is one of the foremost exemplary defensive characters in the franchise. The main thing that completely changes the flow of the match for him is getting that small life lead. I’ve seen good Hondas even sacrifice positional advantage for it.
The second he has it, you’re going to have to come to him, and he’s going to make it very hard for you.

I usually space myself at st.MK/st.HP/st.HK range in order to not get hit by ugly pokes such as cr.LP or st.HK. From there, I either get closer into cr.MP range or walk out of st.MK range. I find that staying slightly outside st.MK range is especially important at the beginning of the match. This is where I can block headbutts safely on reaction, then punish with walk forward st.MK (or as Joz said in another post, EX walldive, slide or st.HP). But it’s still not far enough away for him to be able to safely meter with whiff Command Grab. It’s important to even out the Chipdamage he’s trying to inflict on you by punishing him every time. VS. Honda it’s another match where I feel like poking too much can be your death. I really try hard not to throw normals out predictably cause getting jumped in on can really cost you. Especially if you have the lead, there’s no reason to poke him like an idiot and take risks, because this is one the situations where Honda (knowing that your anti-air options aren’t that stellar) is going to try and guess when you’re going to stick out your little standing mk and jump in on you. All the more reason to not be predictable!
By poking less when you have the life advantage you have a higher chance of anti airing those jump in attempts. Faking pokes by whiffing cr.LPs at the right ranges can bait out jumps.
For anti-airing I personally like jump back fierce, jump MK and jump MP in this matchup. They’re easy to use. However, be wary that sooner or later, you either land in the corner or right in his face. So learning the spacing and timing on st.hk isn’t too wrong either.
If you have the feeling that he is trying to push you into the corner on purpose, try fending him off with a standing fierce (good pushback) or cancel cr.MP into a MP roll. It even does chip, so that’s great too.

If he has the life lead and you have to get it back, what you can try and do is baiting headbutts by walking towards him, but stopping at around cr.MP range. As stated above, you can also fake light punches to bait headbutts, block in time and then punish. Once he sees that he should use the headbutt more conservatively, he is going to stick to his pokes. From there, try outpoking him. If you’re able to stuff his normals 1-2 times in a row the thing he’s instinctively going to do is block (unless he’s a flowchart). In those situations you can even see Kubiwa do ballsy max range Kara’s to take advantage of that moment of hesitation.

If you get a knockdown, safejump Honda and make him waste his meter. Hakaba Poemer also likes doing far jump ins with j.mp/mk on meterless Honda.

EDIT: Ugh, why did I post this in the video thread? lol

@dgowen

Only things I can suggest from watching those vids … change up the sky high claw by using using it to cross them up sometimes (if they are not completely in the corner)

And when you do the jump in Hp st. Hp cr. Mp to ex wall dive combo if u watch and the cr.Mp doesn’t connect don’t do the ex wall dive just use a short backflip instead.

Other than that if your in “poke” mode if a mp lands be ready to link into into an ex walldive if your not saving ex for super or next round other than that good stuff

Thanks Milk M4n! I actually completely forgot about that technique… probably would have worked wonders in most of the situations where I used the back wall instead…

I also found out other bad things about J.FP, FP, c.MP… after J.FP, if you get predictable… you can get SPD’d and just about everything’d out of it by people with decent reversals… so part of my improvement list includes doing the c.LP, then flipping away to keep them blocking and off my crap…

I was surprised at 2 things with Dhalsim… his spinning dives beating EX SHC and also how I crossed him up with a j.FP when I just barely jumped over his Ultra.

And yes, I quite need to work on recognizing hits and continuing combos… that’s always been my downfall. I just don’t have that kind of skill where I can recognize a random hit and combo into a special etc…

Some other things I think I should do: Incorporate df+HK more into my game… I always thought it was unsafe, but I see tons of people using it very effectively. Learning to combo ST after a df+HK (seriously, how do you do that consistently?), confusing downed opponents by corpse hoping them, working on landing more effective izuna drops when I do try and FBA not EX’d and not in a combo, working c.MK into my game (I never hit low…)… I’m sure there is a lot more stuff.

Thanks again!

I hate the Ibuki match-up. I feel like when you block her neckbreaker you can’t punish with Vega’s b&b so I opt to go with c.short xx short ST. Crouching strong seems to take too long to come and and when it does Ibuki recovers and punishes. Also, Vega’s backflips don’t seem to have any evasive value when trying to escape her kunai vortex…most of the time I have to block and find an opening to escape. Maybe it’s a timing issue. Finally her kunais are trickier than Akuma’s air fbs in my opinion in terms of trying to EX Barcelona/Sky High her out of it. At least you can hit them out of the air.

C. Strong should be able to punish anything that C. Short does, they both come out in 4 frames.

Depending on the spacing, the neckbreaker can be either safe or unsafe on block I believe. You may be connecting with c.LK more often simply because Ibuki wasn’t blocking low. Or perhaps the better success you have is due to cr.LK’s hitbox being a better spaced move situationally to beat out more of Ibuki’s attacks after the blocked safe neckbreaker than the cr.MP

Basically, lol idk. Grabbing is a quicker “punish” I think.

Hello fellow Vega players. I’m still fairly new to playing vega i started playing him about a month ago and i decided to post some match over the coarse of said month, any and all critiquing would be nice. Sorry the quality is kinda ass

nice matches but I can see you didn’t confirm cosmic heel into scarlett and that cost you your game in some moments, you have to practice that

Thanks for your feedback. I just fucked up on a lot of occasions in these matches, (there are reasons but) no excuses there… Something I nail 99% and have to nail 100%…

But I learned a lot about my game since I capture my matches and watch my replays. You just see so many things, missed oppertunities and wrong decisions that you just don’t realise while you’re actually playing. I can recommend it to anyone, its a big part of stepping your game up.

Good stuff wwmajin! I don’t have any advice since I’m still a vega newb, but I did steal your df+HK technique, it iss surprising how shiffing it puts people in “dear in headlights” mode and you can follow up with whatever (throw etc)

Played a gainst a decent fei long yesterday hat kind of got chicken wing spammy. Didn’t figure how to deal with it until the third round. I lert him corner me, faked like I was going to c.MP poke, and did a jump back FP into s.FP, c.MP xx ex wall dive etc etc

Is there a video of the kara throw showing input displays? I’m having a hard time understanding how to do it

Thanks!

Gotta love Makoto’s sick corner play, punishing every whiff with CH is so sexy, wish I could have his reflexes.

Video is 1 week old but I couldn’t find it in the thread.

So just got home from the swedish championship that took place on saturday the 19th and the international Dreamhack tournament that took place on sunday the 20th. I placed 5-ish out of 16 in the first and 7-8ish in the second out of 90 or something. No real placement below top 4 but those are my estimates.

Anyway some videos are up on youtube, i reckon there will be more soon. One of me versus SLS that im anxious to watch since it was a nice match. Here are the one’s that are up:

me versus Skatanmilla one of swedens best, he took second place in the tournament.

me versus Cedeftw, swedish Abel player.

me versus Yagami, really solid Dhalsim. I heard he’s probably the best one in Europe. Choked horribly here and missed lots of links that cost me the match pretty much.

me versus some belgian Fei Long player.

me versus some Hawk player. Didn’t know shit about how to play Hawk so ran into some stupid stuff. He’s got better pokes than i thought.

Edit: One more versus Bubblans honda is up

feedback please

i need sim matchup tips =/
and for the loss on blanka i did izuna instead of “crossup ex skyhigh” tried to go thru his up ball but feedback and wassup to everyone

Nice matches there Melubas! I learn a ton from watching you play. I think you could of taken that Sakura… I have a serious problem vs Sakura’s online because they can go high/low so quickly with jump-ins and even thought I KNOW it’s happening, the lag tends to beat me up a bit and let the low hit followed by unfortunate combo. Really appreciate the Honda match too. I have yet to beat a decent honda…

Some things I need cleared up… is it lag online or does Dudley’s EX and FP dash forward multi-punch combo thing allow him enough time to recover and attack with a DP or Ultra before Vega can poke him with a c.LP or c.MP? I could have sworn I could hit those, but I ended up eating a move almost every time I tried to counter…

Anyway, for anyone that was fan of my first wave of videos, here is a second wave!!!

Vega vs Ryu

Vega vs Vega

Vega vs Chun

I included this one in case (1) any of you actually thought I was any good… (2) I didn’t become one of those people that only posts videos of them winning…

Vega vs Cody

This is not particularly a good match… just the hate mail I received at the end made it all worth recording. Uhh… hasn’t Vega been around since SFII? Unfamiliar? Cody was only in 2 SF games (this being his second…)

Here are two more, both Rose matches against different Rose Players

Didn’t know my videos are posted up. Thanks. And thanks to laxlight for the generous comments. It is still a long way to go for me to be really proficient in Vega. Will post more recent matches for comments and suggestions for improvement.
