2 random Vega casuals

We need a few more matches!!
You were the one solely responsible for keeping my Seth victory level below 50% in SFIV!

E. Honda. The “E” stands for “Eat shit, Vega”.

The other night I had the pleasure of landing in an Endless Battle lobby with Mike Ross. I’m no tournament player so I knew I was out of my league, and as expected his Honda steamrolled me. But considering I struggle with this matchup even against mediocre Hondas, I wasn’t too disappointed with how I did.

I’d love to hear feedback or advice about the Honda matchup in general (spacing etc…) as well as what I specifically should have done better. One thing it took me too long to learn was that random EX SHC crossups don’t work on pros ><

Another one of my problems is that I’m so afraid of his headbutts/buttslams/command grabs, that I don’t know how to apply pressure, and I usually end up backing off or running away. This really kills my throw game and corpse hop type shennanigans that work in other matchups. I just end up poking and backing off, which just delays the inevitable asskicking.

For an added humiliation bonus, the 3rd match is vs Ross’ Dan. He was very aggressive, but I was so sure he was going to bait a Splendid Claw that I was afraid to use it against his rushdown, and I ended up letting him pressure me too much.

Yeah the Honda matchup is the only match where i don’t have any clue whatsoever what to do. It seems he can just sit on his ass and as soon as you’re close spam some lp/ex headbutts because they’re almost always safe and do a shitload of damage. He just has so many ways to shut down Vega.

I’m lost when it comes to Honda, in the EVO qualifiers last saturday I came up against an E. Honda in the winner’s bracket…after winning the 1st round of the 1st fight, I took a comfortable lead in the 2nd, made one mistake and ate a 22hit combo! Soon after I was dazed…1st fight over.

After that I decided to focus my energies in the loser’s bracket…and lost the next fight with little or no resistance.

Deuy, what the fuck are you doing with that focus? You’re walking yourself into the corner and letting your opponent gain positional advantage over you by FA-dancing and backdashing. In the end, you were forced to jump and had to take stupid risks. Just for that one mistake. Plus, you got punished with Ultras and Headbutts for it. Those and some minor things were your main mistakes, aside from the fact that you probably committed a whole lot of them simply because you were nervous.
For the spacing, I could write an essay about this, but really…

Sasaki, you’re a top bloke, and I’m genuinely not trying to antagonize you here, but that Vega(although extremely good) does actually lose the fight…
This is my problem with Honda you can fight brilliantly but get battered in a couple of seconds.

I know that Kubiwa should’ve air-grabbed the EX-headbutt at the end of the final round…but that’s extremely difficult (not ot mention daring) to execute…

Ps: Mike Ross is Vermillion…now I don’t feel so bad that he absolutely battered me lol!!

its not the win that matters here. there is a lot to be learned of this video. and that is knowing your spacing so that you are relativly safe to poke honda in case he something. winning isnt everything. and mostly you dont learn anything of videos where you win.

Good point mate…

Haha I know, I know… It mostly stems from me not knowing wtf to do to get in or apply pressure to Honda… I dance around alot and end up focusing out of nervousness or whatever. FA’s are actually a big part of my game and tend to work well for me vs alot of characters, but I don’t think Honda is one of those characters lol.

Alot of the time I was trying to get him to do something so I could punish, but Ross had a way of spacing and choosing the right headbutt in a way that I couldn’t punish on block with either st mk or ex fba.

Thanks for the link, that Vega handles the matchup much better…It’s still kinda depressing that he loses though lol.

What Pedo said. Though I do agree that of course he didn’t always play it perfectly.
There’s also some stuff Destin wrote me about respecting your opponents’ jump arc. I think that’s going to help with the Honda matchup, too… regarding that I still need to test some ranges out in P-Mode though.

Keep us posted…

i believe you couldve done much better if you had actually lost your nervousness.

other than that a few points that i’d like to mention.

1.do not use parlour tactics such as cross up ex shc, improperly spaced light rcf block string enders etc.these arent the kind of players who fall for gimmicks.

2.you never punished the headbutts enough to make him think twice about using it.

3.NEVER do a jump in attack followed by crmk .incase you didnt know, srk characters and characters like honda can use an option select srk or headbutt inbetween your blocked jump in and the corresponding attack.if the corresponding attack is an lp your opponent would just keep blocking, but if you do a crmk, the enemy would just plough right through you simply because of the fact that a jumpin attack followed by a crmk is never a true blockstring.
you could probably use it sparringly against charge chars like honda who would think about using the os everytime( they loose charge),you should never ever use a crmk followup on srk characters!most of the good players who are used to playing against vega would do the srk os everytime to make sure that you never getaway with using a crmk followup.

4.you where corner hugging and kept giving up too much ground.

i know you already know most of this stuff, but you should probably numb down a bit and go against him again!im pretty sure you’d do better!

Thanks for the input Lax, good points. Alot of these unsafe blockstrings and gimmicks are bad habits that I’ve developed from mostly dealing with less skilled players online. I’ll have to make a conscious effort to subdue my scrub tendencies, and stop putting myself in corners

Just letting you all know that I am working on the new video thread. I have a big document I’m working on, and It’s coming along nicely.

So, i bought a HD capture card and put up a little capture test. Not a great performance, I really hate the matchup, but I think an allright ending for the test capture & encoding. ^^

Stay tuned, I’m putting more vids up.
