MAS Opticon - New Arcade Sticks From MAS!

I take it opticons cannot upgrade over existing competition happ stick set ups.

Damnit mas systems, can you just sell me one without having to check ebay all the time already? lol

Go to their twitter site and post your name and phone numbe. The lady called me back. Although they were slow to get me some they called me back a week or two later and said they had two opticons ready for me.

Anyone else having problems with diagonals? If so is there any way to fix it? My traditional hand position for db and df is always just crouching on this stick, and I have to constantly fish for that perfect angle. I was dropping a lot of basic Maxima bnbs in kof 13 and crouching when I should have been crouch blocking.

I already adjusted the gigantic deadzone, which used to be my main problem, so now I’m really starting to enjoy how smooth it is. I’ve never been able to wave dash this quickly on a Sanwa, and I’m now able to consistently combo two stomp glitches with Kim in kof 98. Outside of the diagonals I’m in love with this thing, but good god I’d like to be able to reliably downback.

Are you accustomed to American sticks? That may have something to do with it if you only played on Sanwas. I raised the hell out of my pcbs and all diagonals hit fine.

I ended up making the switch to japanese sticks back in around 05, but there’s no point in sticking with them anymore. I only switched to force myself to learn how to use the damn things and that happened a long ass time ago. Either way, I loosened up the screws even more (beyond what I thought was safe) and while my diagonals are a lot more accurate, the dead-zone is even smaller. I’d rather have a mid sized dead-zone but I’ll take a smaller one if it means I can crouch block and use df command normals in kof.

So after a little tweaking, and barring one or two niggling personal complaints (like the dead-zone vs diagonals), I can say that it might be my favorite non P360 stick. It smokes all the japanese and happ competition sticks I’ve owned. I still like the P360, but there’s no way I’m spending $90 on the damn thing when the Opticon is a perfectly good replacement.

I saw the new square ones too. I’m really curious what the actuator runs into at maximum throw. If it’s part of the joystick body that’s cool but if it actually hits up against the PCB that’s much less cool.

Yeah I am actually a little concerned about the new design, because those actuators can spin freely. At least from what I remember.

I mean if you look at some of the other pictures in the listing the actuator kind of looks like it might be somewhat above the PCB but it’s really hard to tell. Either way, picking up another ver. 1.0 is on my to do list. I also hope that they keep both the circular and square actuator versions available.

Hey fellas, any word on how the 2.0’s square gate interacts with the PCB? Just saw these on eBay and found this thread shortly after. Thanks.

PS. MARVEL MARVEL MARVEL

where exactly can I get one of these sticks? I see that Arcadeshock is holding a 15% off weekend for Evo and I can’t find this thing on their site at all! I really want one because al I play on is american sticks and I never had the chance to own Wico P360

The two varieties of Opticon sticks are available on eBay. Not sure why MAS prefers selling their stuff this way as opposed to re-registering their domain and opening shop but that’s how it is at the moment.

Hope I’m not stepping on toes or anything, but I finally followed the link on EVO stream:

This. I am looking at buying a V1 model now just because I am worried about how 2.0 actuator digging the pcb everytime you move it around…it looks like it could be slightly above it? Hard to tell from the photos though.

Bump. Looks like the “bracket base” as named by MAS , has a built in gate ( not replaceable then) which is in fact solid plastic edges placed exactly where the contacting sides of the microswitches were in the original Competition model.
This MAS stick seems to be a modern HAPP chinese produced custom variant/clone from the looks of the actuator (white and low friction in old HAPP/ IL, black ABS and medium to high friction in new chinese produced HAPP and similar clones) .

The official MAS diagram indicates a round actuator which is not complying with the real life product, yet I believe the indications concerning the height are probably true ( PCB placed 5mm away from the housing’s bottom ). Now if the square actuator rubs or not on the edge of the PCB I cannot say, we would have to ask someone who actually bought one and opened the stick to get a close look.
If it does rub, it would be a serious flaw and if not , it means the 5mm gap really serves the purpose I imagine it should, but who knows!

any update?

When I was at Evo (over the summer), the dude at the Arcadeshock booth told me the MAS people pulled out of the project.

This thread leaves me wanting more!

There was a V1 that seemed to work. Bought and tested by @Pablo

Interesting to me that it didn’t have a plastic ‘light shield’ after reading the amount of work (and money) that Toodles put into making his shield for the JLF.

Then V2 appears with a square actuator. I really can’t think of any reason for that, but a big reason why not.

Then we hear it’s dead.

Did anyone buy a V2?
