Welp just watched it. I felt like the pacing was really bad at times, to the point where I just wanted them to get certain scenes over with and move on. Despite that, I found it enjoyable, seeing these characters interact with each other was fun. Also liked some of the action scenes.
Iron Fist made me facepalm pretty hard. I’ve watched all the marvel netflix series besides that one he’s from and from what I’ve heard/seen, I don’t think I’m missing out on much lol.
I finished watching it and I just dont understand what the point of it all was. The main villains make Kingpin look almost Machiavellian. I mean at least it felt like his plan was going somewhere. Here, The Hand’s big plan is just…stupid and inconsequential. It turns out that beyond assassinating people and grave robbing, they dont actually DO ANYTHING overtly evil here. Seriously, the bad shit that happens is mostly because they just dont give a fuck. And thats stupid and makes our heroes come off as worse heroes and worse people because their big plans could actually hurt people or get them killed.
I also dont like how Elektra’s reasons for doing anything…are also dumb and dont make any sense given what goes on. I cant say anything more for spoiler territory. just that once you reach that point and you see it, its so groan inducing you almost want to skip over it. You cant just help but think to yourself “That is so fucking pointless.”
And thats how i felt about the last 3rd of the show, because the 2 3rds leading up to it were pretty good imo and made me enjoy the show and stick with it. The chemistry was there and so was the character building…until the writers remembered that they hate Iron Fist and made him “Iron Shit” again.
What they were doing was not inconsequential. Their excavation of the dragon’s remains would destabilize the city. The Hand trying to break down the door is how the city got hit with an Earthquake on episode 2. Being responsible for the deaths of 9 million people just to prolong your life hoping to go back to a mystical city that banished you is overtly evil to me. Each finger of the Hand does some truly evil shit. Gao runs a drug operation, the African guy is a warlord and gets kids to clean up murder scenes, the Japanese guy likes to hunt down endangered animals for sport.
But did they ever explain HOW exactly doing that would destroy the city? the dragon itself isnt that big and you could easily pour something down there or fill the hole with rubble. its what the “heroes” did anyway, despite it basically amounting to domestic terrorism and could have accidentally killed people caught in the blast. All they really did was stop a bunch of old people from getting older. Yeah the Fingers by themselves were evil as shit, then show them doing the evil shit that was going on in Daredevil Season 1 and 2. THAT depiction of The Hand is more than enough reason to go after them and to “clean the streets” of their filth. Here, its like who gives a shit if they want to stay alive? All the heroes have to do is bust up their operation or send them packing elsewhere. Basically, me and the rest of the audience were expecting some “Ark of the Covenant” level of evil hoodoo badshit. Instead we get “The Unholy Grail”, except even more lamer. It was a bad payoff.
There was more than one dragon skeleton and the cave was long and deep. Considering an earlier attempt to get in caused an earthquake and Danny opening it caused a city wide power outage it’s not hard to imagine those bones is keeping Manhattan stable. Heroes blowing up the building was done to deny access to what the Hand wanted (strengthening stability was a nice bonus) and they went along with that plan after knowing the building was deserted. The only people in danger of dying were the hand and themselves. There was no need to go in-depth with the Hand’s evil because the other shows already did that. This is not a standalone show. It goings in presuming the audience is familiar with what happened in the four previous Marvel netflix shows.
They will never get Danny right as his identity begins and ends with man with a glowing fist, nevermind he can do that with either hand and has heightened agility and reflexes.
Definitely this…
Danny was infinitely better in this, as was his fight scenes.
Overall, I highly enjoyed this!! The character interactions alone were just too great!!
Luke and Madame Gao are S+ tier in the Netflix MCU!
Spoiler
Though my minor gripe was Luke’s jobbing to certian individuals…
Gao and Danny are mystical powered and skilled so them knocking around Luke was legit.
But the Afican leader of Hand shouldn’t have been f’in with Luke just by skill alone.
God mode Eletrka gets a slight pass due to resurrection magic of the Hand. Though she had no strength feats or mystical abilities to show she was capable knocking Luke around.
I enjoyed the series and felt the quicker pace helped it remain more focused rather than throwing in too many subplots which hurt Jessica Jones and is yet another flaw in Iron Fist. Sigourney really did a great job as well, giving the Netflix MCU another great villain (w/ exception to Iron Fist).
Spoiler
I’m anxious to see where each show goes in the aftermath of this. Danny is basically taking Daredevil’s place, Luke is going to keep being the uncle to everyone in Harlem, Jessica’s back in the PI game, and Matt is recovering under his mother’s watch. Punisher teaser got me hype too. I wonder if Misty will get the robo-arm or if she’ll just remain with one arm.
Misty was getting her cybernetic arm. Her recovering in a hospital owned by Danny and them point out that he has “connections” pretty much gives it away
Ok cool, I didn’t know that. If any character needed this show though, it was Iron Fist. He still isn’t cool, but he was much better than in his own show. Kinda reminded me of Oliver in S3-S4 of Arrow on his own show as compared to teaming with Flash
daredevil was the best of netflix marvel
defenders isnt that good to me
alot of banter, arguing, and needless time wasting after the urge to rush to something urgent and important just a moment ago
alot of that going on
[details=Spoiler] also like how the captain was like oh is there no way into the building??!!
they have hi tech lock down!
misty simply shoots a lock on the door and goes in[/details]
Defenders has its flaws. Perhaps for something that was planned since Season 1 of Daredevil, perhaps the story should have been more intricate. But overall, I enjoyed it. And while none of the Netflix Marvel series has yet to top Daredevil, Defenders is probably 2nd place for me.
