Not really a versus question because i think i’d enjoy both games but if you guys have to choose one because of limited funds which one would cater too someone who has never played the series before and just looking for friendly games online?
nothing about MvC2 is friendly, you will get ur ass taxed if you never played the game before.
UMvC3 is much newer and easier for that matter, plus you’ll actually find new players online.
with that said, imo MvC2>>>>UMvC3
I’d pick option 3: Getting a job.
I’d pick option 4: Take those funds buy capcom and hire real fighting game designers
Limited funds? I would go to the dollar menu then… MVC2
UMvC3:
+consistent on all consoles
+has one of the largest active communities
-netcode sucks a huge dick
-being a retail game it costs more
MvC2:
+being a digital title, it costs less
+hailed as a classic
+online is pretty solid from what I recall
+/- since it’s a classic, a lot of shit is established already
-current gen ports are a tad inconsistent from the original Arcade/Dreamcast versions which is where most the information and tech come from
-community is nowhere near as prominent as UMvC3’s nowadays
Yes
It depends on how you intend to spend your limited funds. MVC2 is not noob friendly, but extremely fast-paced, has a bigger roster, more assist variety and team combinations, and has a ton of information available for the game. At this point, there are more veterans and killers still playing MVC2 and it will be quite a grind in order for you to get to their level. It’s also cheaper than UMVC3, however there rarely offline MVC2 tournaments, but check your local matchmaking and tournament thread for region-specific information.
MVC3 is far easier to play, since it was designed to ease the barrier of entry for brand new players looking to play a new Marvel game. It costs a bit more to purchase, but there’s a lot of competition for the game, mediocre net code, and a lot of tournaments and offline sessions available.
So if you want to fuck around and have fun on the cheap, go with MVC2. If you’re considering possibly joining the competitive scene, then pick UMVC3.
I have both and although i suck at both, i would have to say get UMVC3. MvC2 is fun and all but everyone online is godlike and you really won’t have anywhere to practice and improve your skills unless you have a friend playing with you. UMVC3 on the other hand is an easier game. UMVC3 also has more new players online but the majority of the people are still really skilled so don’t expect to start winning every match after playing it for 2 or 3 weeks.
MVC2 is for men.
UMVC3 is for kids.
Do not make threads like this in Fighting Game Discussion. Moved to the Newbie Dojo because if this question belongs anywhere, it’s there.
He’s right; and even at that, it *should *be locked because technically its a versus thread.
I don’t think it was intended to be a versus thread. OP just isn’t sure which game is better suited for him. It’s a little bit different than saying “WHICH GAME IS BETTER? MVC2 OR UMVC3? GOOOO!”
I didn’t see it as a meaningful Versus thread: I saw it rather as a “I am incapable of making fairly basic life decisions” thread, which I strongly frown upon. Cowboy up and make up your own damned mind. If you don’t know what you want more than anybody else does, you’re in for some serious life trouble.
I didn’t really mean to offend anyone by posting in the wrong section or asking such a a question(both games look like fun to play) i’m still learning this site.
I’m on a budget right now i can’t go out buying a 30 dollar game and a 20 dollar card for points i love gaming but i have other priorities so i don’t care about stating my lfunds on gaming right now.
Thanks superfreak, factory, eltrouble, smashman and jd, it is good that some people on a fighting game forum would answer a fighting game question,i mean isn’t that how things work when you’ve never played either game and you want advice from people who have, i have an idea what i’m getting now, thanks again guys.
Your best option seems to be MVC2, since that seems to be the only game you can afford right now. That, or wait on a good used-game deal on UMVC3, which is rare if you’re looking to only spend $20 or so.
You have to realize that this newbie section is filled with people who don’t read rules, or act like assholes, and/or both. For every genuine newbie who wants good advice, there’s about five other dudes who just us to spoon-feed them answers in an effort to turn them into top players overnight.
How about SkullGirls (cheaper than MvC2 and there’s also nobody playing it so it feels almost the same!) or simply playing MSH/XvSF on GGPO for 0$?
If I had only 20 bucks to spend, I’d use those for anything but a videogame. And if it really has to be one, I’d think by myself because it’s a rather crucial decision <>
Why is this in the Newbie Zone? I’ve seen the mod of this board lock down threads like this by the dozens in the past, this seems more like a general “Fighting Game Discussion” or something. This is a board for learning your first buttons and stuff.
MvC2 is not something I can recommend if you’ve never played it. It’s quite fast, quite hectic, and the majority of people still playing it are very good at what they do.
By comparison UMvC3 has decent enough online play and a big enough playerbase that you’ll still manage to find some fun matches, and there is still a desire in the community to learn new tricks. Marvel 2 is a lot like 3rd strike or Super Turbo in that there aren’t going to be a lot of new players to it’s scene, and then only the killers remain.
It’s a bit off-topic, but I wanted to clarify. ST does have a lot of good players, but we have a fair share of new players and intermediate players as well who play online as well as showing up to offline tournaments. The ST scene is pretty welcoming and inviting of new players, since we know how difficult it is to get new blood playing the game, we try to help out whenever and however we can.
That’s actually surprising (and neat) to hear. I’ve always admired ST and have thought of picking it up but I have just assumed it was nothing but killers and pros left over. I might check it out.
