I’m glad to hear you’re thinking about jumping back in the game again. I can assure you that while there are a lot of good players both offline and online, the scene largely consists of intermediate and high-ish level players, along with a sprinkling of new players trying to up their game. But regardless of skill level, I’ve yet to meet anyone who wasn’t willing to hand out advice or critique without degrading you.
If you have questions, feel free to post them in the ST section, or ask me if you want.
I’d go for ultimate, it’s a lot easier to approach, plus it’s better in many different aspects. I still do play and respect Marvel 2, but if you want me to choose between the two games I’d choose Ultimate.
Start with MvC3. Its the simplest, and its high speed gameplay will get ur fingers adjusted nicely. Then, you can move onto MvC2; I’m not gonna lie, you are gonna get raped really bad in MVC2, but at least you’ll know what was going on
In UMVC3, start off with the Mission mode, it gives you a feel of the characters. I’d suggest you learn the Shotoz first, they’re really simple. (Akuma, Ryu) Then like dedicate urself to at least one badass character to support the others. Mine’s Strider (obviously) try out a Zero or Wesker or Dormammu etc
True but I have access to Jin, Hayato, Captain Commando, Gambit, a much better Jill, BB Hood. In umvc 3 i have Deadpool and…thats it. So when I did play, I did Deadpool/?/?. The rest of the cast is completely boring. MvC 2 > umvc 3.
Cap n Jin are definitely good. But that’s the thing, I ain’t saying Team MSS is good; it’s MOTHERFUCKINGUNFAIRDICKSUCKINGBITCHCUNTFACENYAAAAARRRRHHGGGGSSS
I love Marvel 2, don’t get me wrong, but I think in %age of balanced characters, Marvel 3 is better. And sure deadpool is really good, but in Marvel 3, most of the cast is FUN. Hsien-Ko? Fun. Strider? Fun. Iron Fist, Chris, Akuma, Dante, Vergil (to some extent) She Hulk, Haggar? ALL FUN.
And if we think about it, isn’t that why we play video games? To have fun, ryt??
That said, Marvel 1 is the most balanced. You can use anyone in the cast without fear of getting super chewed out.
But for someone who has never played either? Having x-factor at low levels doesn’t matter a whole lot, I remember when vanilla was out I’d tell my friends to use it every round and they wouldn’t touch the damn system.
It’s flaws tended to contribute to gameplay rather than detract from it. Any game-breaking bugs were banned in tourneys anyway. It’s an interesting game in that it rewards a lot of combo creativity without any significant restrictions built into the game engine, it was extremely fast-paced, and no comeback factors.
UMVC3 having x-factor is considered by many to be a significant flaw in game design than anything MVC2 had. Getting a power-up for getting your ass whooped is easily the worse idea for a competitive game.
Gems are allowed not. Gems aren’t really game-breaking, just extremely time-consuming to pick the exact gems you want. They kind of fixed that in recent versions, but not very well. Basically you have to memorize which gems you want with the corresponding “number” for the gem. If you ask me, they should just have basic defense, power, meter, i.e. gems that activate under one specific condition. That way I won’t have to memorize 6 multi-digit numbers for each of my teams.
And we had a fun side-tournament for UMVC3 down here in LA, with no x-factors. The game is significantly more enjoyable when you don’t have an x-factor to finish off happy birthdays or to avoid chip or mount a comeback you didn’t earn. However, people might complain if they don’t use x-factor, because some people need that shit for their team compositions. It’s like asking people not to use ultras in SF4, it just won’t work at a wide-scale level.
Yeah pretty much this. XFactor, love it or hate it, is a pretty set mechanic that has a lot of importance in Marvel 3. I like that it can be both a comeback mechanic and a combo extender. I think sometimes the damage output might be a little too high (would prefer if it was closer to a baroque system), but in a game where Zero can 1-touch kill anyone in the game, I think being able to pop x-factor and one-combo kill anyone in the game seems balanced enough.
If you want a real fun side-game play SF4 with the HUDs turned off.
