Marvel Tiers for New Players

LOL it was TRON/Spiral! Spiral/Tron is high tier…I was just using Spiral’s assist with Tron lockdown. Granted, I really wanted to win some  I did get some wins with Jill oddly enough. You guys definitely know your low tier. Guess I have been out of touch. I did feel bad picking Megaman as well, I don’t think he serves as lowtier.

Another oddity is that the only thing that slowed down Beats’s Anakaris was my own Anakaris, keepaway style

anakaris vs anakaris is usually a slower goofy game (from playing gabe and dereklearnslow’s anakaris)

anak A: ok now I’m gonna curse

anak B: ok well take come coffins

A: coffin

B: coffin

A: coffin

B: how about a curse

lol

Does anyone know what non-God characters have good match-ups against each the God tier characters?

For example, I’ve heard that Venom (backed with Doom AA) is good against Sentinel. Or Spiral is good against Cable. Etc. Etc.

Just wondering, I refuse to play Cable/Sentinel/Storm (at least runaway Storm) and don’t particularly have any interest in playing Magneto. But I’m sure I’ll see plenty of them.

Mega Man/Cable/Tron is seen as a counter to MSP.

I don’t know about Venom, but Omega Red isn’t bad versus Sentinel.

Guile’s Anti-air assist is good against Sentinel, and his normals actually have good priority.

Honestly, most low-tier/non-top 10 matchups vs. tops haven’t been ironed out, but the characters that show potential to grow on point are Dhalsim, Anakaris, Omega Red, Chun, Ruby Heart, Morrigan, Wolverine, Rogue, Ken, Spider-man. And those are just the characters with the ability to get things together solo. When you factor in team mechanics, the list of viable low tier characters gets much bigger.

Low tier characters aren’t separated by as large a gap as people think. It really comes down to the little extras that certain low tiers can do better than tops. For instance, Rogue’s assist punish relaunch loop is something that god tier can’t do quite as safely. I can’t think of any gods that can hit you with as many extended hi-lo sequences as Morrigan can. And nobody gets to duck under more shit than Wolverine(s) can-- Mega Man’s FP buster, HSF, Rocket Punch-- all kinds of things you can just squeak through and punish. So it just come down to knowing the mechanics of the game, and figuring out what each character can exploit.

I’ve said elsewhere that I think the next level of the game is going to be maintaining an effective rush/lockdown offense WHILE juggling an assist at the same time. In other words using set attack strings with normal/specials/supers plus assists that serve a dual purpose of locking down the point while keeping the assist character in midair and adjusting this on the fly based on what they try to do with their point character to save their assist. A lot of characters have the potential to do this well and not necessarily with meter, and most of them aren’t top tier characters-- Ruby, O Red, Wolverine, Anakaris and others.

I think speed up wolvie ron can beat any team in the game if they have 2 bars. It’ll just take one good pin and you’ll be sleeping with the fishes.

Guile does OK vs Sent, O. Red, Ruby heart too, BH with commando…
If sent doesn’t have Commando or cyke then characters like Doom with commando assist do well.

EDIT - I’ll add later what characters do well vs top 4
and the reasoning.

anyone remember this tier list from gamepro

Awww, let’s not forget the pink shit glory days of Doom/Cable/Blackheart vs. Doom/Cable/Blackheart, and Strider/Doom/AAA teams.

It took a few years for Mag/Storm rush to truly develop, and for Sentinel to get fully fleshed out. Widespread ROM and claw triangle jumps, along with more dynamic aerial Sent, didn’t come around until around 2003 iirc. Strider, Doom, Blackheart, and Spiral were more highly thought of early on, among others. This game’s development competitively is pretty interesting, let’s not generalize and shortchange it by saying it’s been top 4 only the whole time.

are there any non-god/top tiers that are solid answers (or competitive) with cable?

Any character that can build meter fast.

How does that work as an answer to Cable?

Strider/doom counters cable if you have good execution.

Oh, my bad, I thought you wanted a character that works well with Cable. I’d say characters like Spiral, Dr. Doom, Blackheart and Anakaris do a good job at it.

yeah, that’s my bad. meant to cable, not with cable.

EDIT - just say VS next time - faster to type

Cammy does good, strider / doom is really good
Spiral, Dhalsim if you can rush down, Rogue, Chun Li, spiderman?
Morrigan - combo darkness illusion - good mixup options.
Wolverines do OK as well if you can combo speed ups and do resets - but low stamina and certain assists (cable/cyke AAA)can snuff them out.

Essentially vs Cable you want someone who won’t get pinned down easily with standing gun, drones/rocks etc… , grenade type stuff

-> characters who can dash extremely fast ( e.g Cammy, Wolverines) or airdash or double jump. They help stop him getting meter as quickly. Also try and get him in the corner and keep him there.

So you want a mixture of mobility, & damage output - resets/ Good DHC’s

WOW :rofl: Sentinel got a 2 :rofl::rofl::rofl:

while servbot got a 3.5. craaazzzyy.

I’ve always wondered about this since I’ve seen you mention in a couple times…mind to elaborate? As well as Wolvie/Doom, if you don’t mind.

Thanks in advance.

sure, can’t wait to play you guys again @ sb4!

first of all, go here. http://www.video-opera.com/features/mvc2/mvc2-joo.php

look @ the differences between the normals. The most notable are the 1 frame jab and 3 frame launcher which means its one of the fastest launchers in the game. His jumping normals are also VERY fast if you compare them to the rest of the cast.

He has THE fastest dash in the game in speed up. This is extremely useful for anti guard cancel and its really what makes him so dangerous. If you pushblock him while he’s in speed up, wolvie can stay on you CONSTANTLY. You’re basically forced to deal with him over and over till he lands a hit.

He has 2 hit instant overhead with j.lk, j.fp during speed up. Great for mixups. If you’re in speed up already and you get a free tron layer, wolvie gets a double high series with c.lp+tron, c.lk, j.lk instant overhead, drill claw away, j.lk instant overhead. Of course you can push block this series but you’ll allow wolvie to be all over you again. His j.fp is also an instant overhead and this is vital vs sentinel since it breaks his armor in 1 hit. Ugly stuff like call tron, drill claw fwd can be very beneficial. Its basically an ugly ADF crossup like magneto has.

His throw is flat out retarded. You can mash it for hella life and if the opponent doesn’t roll or tech, you get a free combo. If the opponent rolls, god help them on wake up. To many options for wolvie right there and if you tech hit, he’s all over you again. His throw is pretty good so it sets up an option tree for him to land additional hits and pressure.

His main game revolves around getting a bnb with tron during speed up. Since you can’t PB wolvie, he’ll eventually land a mixup sooner or later. Pretty hard to deal with 3 frame low, 5 frame high which is faster than magneto but magneto gets more of them. The best you can do is guess block and that won’t work forever. If you land a hit during speed up with tron, he has several infinites.

**bnb or mixup+tron, infinite, tron leaves, one of many xups+tron again, infinite etc… **

wolvie just has so many options after hit in speed up and his resets are random as fuck.

basic pattern for chunky life and wolvie is already in speed up. bnb+tron, infinite till tron can be called again, c.lk, c.mp, wait call tron, c.fp forces a crossup. If you block the crossup, he gets to do an instant overhead and if that hits, he can recombo back into an infinite, its HUGE LIFE. He’ll definitely pop a top or two.

I just know the basics though, mixup, eczangief and risu are the people actually going for it.

Would it be smart to start with Wolvie when you’re not running two Wolvies or start with a character that can increase meter easily just to make sure that you’ll last long in Speed Up Mode?
