Marvel Comics Thread

Alright I finally got a chance to read some Brubaker Cap comics, I would have done so sooner but none of his TPB’s are numbered, buying things out of order peeves me. I picked up issues #34-36 with Bucky as Cap.

Despite my love for the original Cap, there is something about Bucky Cap that is very…refreshing. It really feels like a new start, and oddly I fully endorse Bucky as the new Cap. Not saying I wouldn’t want Steve back, but Bucky is an excellent replacement.

Since I’ve finally had a taste of Brubaker “magic” I’m addicted like crack cocaine, could someone help me with old issues? Individuals are fine, as well as TPB’s. I just need a list ready so I can buy and read next week, then discuss and/or bitch about past things here.

Good news though, my local hobby shop (I play Warhammer among other things) Is now carrying comics on a regular basis, so I can finally keep up with everyone else here.

Here’s the order of the Brubaker Cap TPBs: First, Winter Soldier volumes 1 and 2. Then there’s Red Menace volumes 1 and 2. Next is Civil War: Captain America. And the most recent book is The Death of Captain America volume 1. That should bring you up to about issue 31.

Or, you can get the Captain America Ed Brubaker Omnibus. That beast has everything up to issue 25.

And then you can get some Daredevil, Sleeper, Scene of the Crime, CRIMINAAAAAAL!!!111, Catwoman, Gotham Central, and everything else.

Reading Brubaker comics: it’s how we repent of all our sins.
CHURCH OF BRU UNITE

So I started Mighty Avengers and so far I like it.
I totally ROFLed when I saw a heart from Ares when Widow was giving out orders to the SHIELD people in Issue 3 XD

I’m not sure how definitive this qualifies as but aside from picking up old school Cloak and Dagger comics, there’s lots of interesting yarns in the Strange Tales comics in the 80s. You can pick a lot of these issues up for dirt cheap in comic book store backbins and conventions. The artwork by Bret Blevins still holds up really well and Cloak and Dagger’s creator, Bill Mantlo is handling the writing chores. And in Strange Tales you get lots of Doctor Strange stories too since the book was made to feature both of these characters whose books had lagging sales at the time, so they would just share the same comic every month.

Incredible Herc is epic

Daredevil I’ve been wanting to get into for a long time now, I have the same problem there when trying to find things in order. Thanks a lot Zephy, I’ll get most of these with my next paycheck.

Brubaker’s Daredevil begins with issue 82. The TPBs, in order, are Daredevil: The Devil, Inside and Out volumes 1 and 2, and then Daredevil: Hell to Pay volume 1. (I am not sure if Hell to Pay volume 2 is out yet.)

It’s nice if you read Bendis’ run before Brubaker’s… It’s not a must, but it’s just nice. Bru’s run begins exactly where Bendis’ ends, so if you start with Brubaker’s you will know how Bendis’ epic ends. Just so you know.

Thanks again Zephy, I’m not a big Bendis fan but I heard his DD run was pretty epic, so I might just start with that.

Oh god someone get a mop, zephy’s brubaker sense went off again…

Frank Miller trades are still available.

I highly recommend it before reading Bendis. After Miller, skip everything and move directly to Bendis’ run (ignore the Kevin Smith run) and then onto Brubaker’s.

All marvel books should’ve followed that path of modernizing characters after Frank Miller’s run. We probably would have realistic protrayals of alcoholism or better female characters or race relations, instead we get insulting notions of each in 2008. /RANT

Good to know, I’m reading the Bendis run right now (and yes I did read Smith’s… and somewhat enjoyed it actually), but I’ll definately pick those up, thanks!

I’m a Kevin Smith fan, so I might partake in his run as well. Miller is like the father of DD in a sense, so yes his run would be great as well. I got a lot on my plate to read now =/

Smith won me over with his Green Arrow revival mini, which was what made GA one of my favorite characters. Since then people have treated him with respect, well, until his craptacular recent death.

Damn you DC…damn you.

Man you ain’t kidding. I didn’t even know there was a Hercules character in Marvel until i saw the Civil War issue where he was beating the shit out of Iron Man and Co. trying to protect Captain America.

Herc has been around for a looong time in Marvel, I love his yearly encounters with Thor. They always had an epic throwdown, friendly rivalry kinda thing. I’ve read a few of the Incredible Herc, and I feel it’ll be the best Marvel comic no one is reading lol. I hope he keeps his book when the Red Hulk thing debuts, It’s a great mix of the funny and nonstop action.

Yeah, Herc’s a classic character, yo. He just disappeared the last few years cuz he’s FUCKING LAME, but got put back on the map in Civil War.

HERC IS NOT LAME!

I dare you to try to get perfect curled hair and an amazing beard like that, I fucking dare you!

All completely awesome, of course. That stuff has been collected into giant Omnibus HCs, too.

I liked Kevin Smith’s run, but Shengy’s right. It’s not essential reading. It definitely pales in comparison to his Green Arrow run. But Quesada’s art is pretty awesome in it. And David Mack’s run is worth reading as well.

There are a couple other DD books over the past couple years that are worth reading, too. David Lapham wrote and drew Daredevil/Punisher: Means and Ends, and if you don’t read that, P.Gabby and his Compton homeboys will murda you and your family. And Quesada did Daredevil: Father, which is fantastic. He doesn’t get enough respect for being a great storyteller.

None of this is as essential as Miller, Bendis, and Bru, but they are all great reads. Stuff to spend your money on if you have anything left over.

THE DEADLY HANDS OF SHANG-CHI, MASTER OF KUNG-FU!!!

Mighty Avengers is awesome, Initiative is OK but it’s all drama.

Just read Wolverine Origins; DeadPool makes this shit look good.

You know who’s due for a revamp? Blade. I mean it seems as though Marvel doesn’t know what to do with him and i always felt he should branch out and fight other supernatural enemies ala Buffy. They should make like a paranormal branch off of SHIELD to combat those type of enemies.
