Marvel Comics Thread

Another good week for me.

I was a little hesitant to pick up Indestructible Hulk. Not for any particular reason, just didn’t care to put it on my radar, but the shop dude recommended it for me, and I went with it. I liked it. I liked the resolution that Hulk and Banner came to in Jason Aaron’s run and it was cool to see that sorta carry over into this new series. Hulk working for SHIELD is a nice touch. Science guy Banner, smashing guy Hulk–sounds like a good match.

Still enjoying Captain Marvel. With the time travel arc wrapped up, we can move on to seeing her in action for real. I liked that Monica was in it to, and the banter between her and Carol on the Captain Marvel name was cool. Looking forward to seeing where this arc goes.

Iron Man was cool.

Journey into Mystery starting off with a fresh new look with a new character. I’m happy to see something involving Sif. She’s always been a background character to me, and I never thought much of her aside from her being there in the background fighting giants alongside Thor and his crew. So I’m really excited to see her doing her own thing. Looks like something crazy is about to go down for her.

Now Spider-Man…that was… hm. I can’t.

Gotta spoiler this

[details=Spoiler]WHAT IN THE WORLD!?!! REALLLY? REALLY? DID OCK JUST WIN? REALLY? REALLLYY? I NEED THE NEXT ISSUE NOW!!

Spoiler

I don’t think he’s won yet, there are still 2 more issues to this arc so I won’t count Peter Parker out yet. The real spoiler is that we know he won’t be Spider-Man in Superior and wasn’t it confirmed that he doesn’t die? So I’m thinking he does at least get a body to inhabit - hopefully his own.

A lot of good reads this week. Spent more money than I wanted to, but thankfully I wasn’t disappointed.

Captain Marvel is back to it’s original art style which was a huge factor in making me pick it up. I don’t want to give anything away story wise, but there are some outright beautiful panels throughout. As LegendaryDJ said, the banter between the old and new Captain Marvel was excellent also.

Indestructible Hulk was a new thing for me as I don’t read Hulk books. The only Hulk character that has ever really interested me has been Red Hulk - though I’ve been eyeing the Red She-Hulk book lately. Question for those who do regularly read Hulk - where does Banner rank in intelligence compared to Richards and Stark? Overall, I enjoyed the issue and anything that involves SHIELD is a bonus for me as I’m trying to learn more about them and their characters.

Deadpool. I forgot to mention I read the first issue and while I like the concept, I’m not sure I’m ready for whacky Wade and I know why - UXF Deadpool. That characterization of Deadpool is just awesome. He’s a bit whacky, a bit violent sociopath, and a little empathetic. The Deadpool thus far in this new volume is 100% whacky. Don’t get me wrong, it’s done very well - I’m just not sure it’s the Deadpool I want to read. I think I’ll see how the rest of this first arc plays out and go from there b/c the concept is amazing and it’s execution has been surprisingly good.

Captain America w/ a sci-fi twist? I wasn’t sure about it especially since Cap has been a complete jerk lately, but by the end I was somewhat sold. Probably due to it seemingly going the route of the Cable/Hope scenario where the hero is protecting a child through hostile territory and conditions.

Ironman was awesome. Wish the duels would’ve been given more time, but still awesome. Not a regular Ironman reader so I don’t get if that was a surprise ending or not.

UXF lived up to it’s standard. Are we surprised? Quite possibly the best book out for any publisher right now.

Spoiler

That panel w/ Fantomex still pinned to the wall by all those knives. Wow.

Ultimate X-Men was a Point One issue, but still was a great read. Not a ton of action, but it set the stage nicely after Divided We Fall/United We Stand arc. Didn’t like the art change, but perhaps that was just for the Point One issue. Kitty Pride is definitely a beast in this series. Definitely worth picking up this series if you haven’t.

EDIT: I also neglected to mention I’ve been reading some old arcs I’ve had on my iPad for a while. One of the better things about reading comics digitally - the ability to pick up your entire collection on the train and just read some back issues. I’m just glad I don’t have a 4G subscription (my iPad is wifi only) or I’d probably end up doing a lot of impulse buying.

X-Force: Sex & Violence definitely lived up to it’s title and billing. Was nice to see The Guild of Assassins pop up. Hopefully the new Gambit series will give them a bit more action. The violence was even more over the top than I expected and I’m glad the sex part was only given one real scene w/ the rest of it covered through innuendo and sly remarks.

X-Infernus, one of the Magik/Limbo focused arcs just gave me some good background on the character as I was away from comics when she became a big player.

That’s kind of a hard question to answer, since they really specialize in certain areas. Stark with the engineering, Banner with the radiation effects, Richards with the spacey stuff, then you got other smart people like Pym, T’challa, Spidey, and such. Richards is probably ranked at the highest with no real equal save for Doom. After that I’m not sure who would go where. Maybe Stark and Banner, then T’challa and Pym. Isn’t Amadeus Cho supposed to be seventh on the list?

I’ve been kinda following Matt Fraction’s career for a while, although I’ve got some major gaps in his more recent Marvel work (including The Defenders) and I haven’t read all of Casanova, which is what is probably his best comic. I never really thought too deeply about his dialogue, but I think his strength is taking a strong theme or high-concept and executing it with aplomb. I don’t know if Fear Itself was his own idea or something that Marvel’s editors invited him to write, but that was probably the weakest comic of his I’ve read. (Although I still think it’s far, FAR better than average compared to what Marvel and DC typically crap out).

If you want to give him another chance, I’d recommend seeking out his Immortal Iron Fist and The Order. I also liked his really early indie comics like Last of the Independents and Rex Mantooth. And everyone only has love for Casanova.

So far I’m enjoying my marvel now stuff, in particular I like the new thor and I don’t mind the new red she-hulk books. UXF is just to damn OP…this entire comic series from issue #1 NEEDS to get adapted to a 3 season animated series or something cause damn.

I have not yet read ASM but fuck you guys and every comic site are making me want to include it on the top of my pile now. I intentionally put towards the bottom to even out the load of good/decent books but now I feel like I have no choice but to move it up!

Forget that - I want an R-rated HBO/Showtime/AMC series.

I can dream, right?

But seriously, Marvel is sleeping on possibilities like this. I’m all for having child-friendly animation series and things like that as I believe it’s important to make new fans and just give them solid cartoons. However, a live-action cable series for the more mature titles like UXF, Thunderbolts, etc could amazing.

Immortal Iron Fist - another recent read of my mine. Didn’t read the entire run, just up to the conclusion of the main arc. I really want more Iron Fist. The Prince of Orphans was that dude.

I agree.

Comic readers are all mostly college age anyways and I think kids these days from 10+ are smart enough to at least appreciate the violence from something like UXF. Marvel and DC need to start adapting their material to more adult audiences like animes, they still seem to think that the mainstream culture is stuck in the silver age and can’t move past to what comics have evolved to.

Another slip that might reveal the Superior Spider-Man’s identity or Marvel is just screwing with us. Possible MAJOR SPOILER.

I’m so torn as to whether or not I want to read that…

Edit: Just read it. Underwhelmed.

I think my favorite book of the week was Uncanny X-Force. Kinda sad that the last issue is next month. I want that series in an omnibus format already.

ASM #700 preview.

Martellus Bennett is alright in my book:

Nice! I just hope ‘off’ is a typo, unless it’s an AvX aftermath reference or something. :looney: I don’t know if any of you watched Extras but it’s just like that running gag they had, “Barry off East Enders.”

New X-Men Event teased: X-Terminated

I really hope this crosses over with the AOA book - which is actually pretty good. While it has it’s moments, I’m not a big fan of it’s art.

For those that don’t read UXF:

I read that, too, but he definitely made me scratch my head with that Scott Summers comment. I mean, from the way he says it, you’d think Cyclops’ power is to save people from falling.

Anyway, speaking of football players who like comics, Lance Briggs is such a big fan that he even tried to create his own comic. Top Cow published the first issue as part of their Pilot Series. I bought that comic in a quarter bin a while ago and it was pretty terrible… I know he’s not a real comic book writer but I still expected more from an All-Pro linebacker.

There are quite a few athletes that love comics. Brook Lopez is one I recently learned about.

I heard about the Lance Briggs comic. Wasn’t that one where all these athletes from different sports were superheroes too? It sounded real generic. Though it reminded me of that old Mutant League cartoon which was AWESOME!

Bones Justice baby!

how good was nfl superpro

They did this early in the season for Brian Dawkins

I know Lamar Woodley of the Steelers has a Wolverine tattoo on his arm. He also went to Michigan too as well.

There was a video of Brook Lopez going to NYCC this year.

Eagles fan here and I never saw that B-Dawk poster! He’s one of my favorite players of all-time - dude was a terror on the field.

A couple months ago I found a copy of NFL Superpro in a quarter bin. It was the issue with Lawrence Taylor as guest star. That was a really bad comic. I couldn’t finish it.

The comic that Lance Briggs created (really, I think he just came up with the idea and Phil Hester actually wrote the dang thing) was called Seraph. It was really bad - just a generic, Top Cow comic with the heavy handed and ill-founded religious elements and mystical mojo junk.

Here’s one of my favorite NFL Films clips. It’s about Brian Dawkins. You can see his locker decorated with Wolverine stuff near the beginning.

7:30 is tough to watch if you’re an Eagles fan.
