Marvel Comics Thread

Wolverine and Daken’s conversation was also damn good.

I’ve totally taken UXF for granted w/ how good it’s been. Hopefully the new run will keep the same quality.

I’m so excited for Marvel NOW… Cyclops as a revolutionary, Psylocke leading the new UXF, an all-female group starring Misty Knight and Dani Moonstar… just wow.

All-New X-Men #1 was pretty good. Of course it laid the groundwork for the old group coming to the present. The art is pretty sick, but the new mutants introduced didn’t bring anything new to the table powers wise - hopefully they’ll develop those characters more as the series goes on. [ 4/5 ]

Wolverine & the X-Men was surprisingly good. Hated the art on everyone except Angel and a couple others (to avoid spoilers). Again my main problem is that the new mutants introduced in this book weren’t all that impressive - at least the ones in ANXM were more on the serious side. WXM’s new mutants are kinda silly. However the story of Angel recruiting the first was really well done. [ 4/5 ]

That’s all I’ve read thus far.

I was finally able to visit the city to buy comics and I go back to work Monday. Little by little things are getting back to normal.

Favorite Marvel book I read so far was ASM.

ASM

Spoiler

Loved seeing both of the Hobgoblins fall into the body of water, great silent nod by Slott. Spider-Man and Hobgoblin fell into a body of water years ago and Spider-Man emerged just with his mask. It was right before Spidey was teleported to Battleworld for the original Secret Wars. Ah memories!

New female Avengers character named Smasher.

I enjoyed Fantastic Four. Was scared that since Hickman wasn’t on it that it’d be terrible, but it still had the overall spirit that a FF book is supposed to have, so I’m cool with it. Not saying that I’m expecting any big time super Hickman level stories in the future from it, but as long as it remains a fun book about adventure, I’ll be sticking with it and Future Foundation as well.

Spidey was good. Slott’s really hyping up what’ll go down in 700, so I’m looking forward to it.

Thor was amazing. From the set up the first issue did, you can tell this is going to be interesting. And of course the art was brilliant. Been a while since I had a really good feel from a Thor story. Fraction’s run was alright, but I gladly welcome this new direction.

Red Hulk’s book stays extremely solid. Betty at the forefront of it is another welcome change, but Jeff stays true to whatever he did that saved the whole Red thing from being a horrible idea to something that has been one of Marvel’s better books.

Aside from that, I’m catching up on my Avengers Academy. That book just stays great. Read through what they were doing during AvX. Too good. I haven’t followed much of X-23 at all, but seeing her and Finesse relate so well with each other really gave me an appreciation of her character. And Emma coming to destroy Juston’s Sentinel was brilliant. Out of all of Marvel’s books, I feel that Avengers Academy does the best job of growing and developing its cast. Every character in the book just comes off well done and all for different reasons. That’s the kinda stuff I like to see.

All and all, a good comic run this week for me.

Which is why I really doubt they’re actually going to go through with the premise of arena. They wouldn’t go through the trouble of introducing new characters, giving them good characterization, good relationships, and then just kill them off. But it’s Quesada so wtf do I know. And Finesse isn’t even in the book or any other one afaik…

See, that’s what I’m hoping for. I’d be more convinced of that if it was Gage writing for Arena, but it’s someone different so I don’t know. Like I said, regardless of the outcome, I just hope that same character driven story telling happens.

I hope Superboy Prime shows up and punches the entire series out of reality. But I admire your optimism.

Podcast discussing Fearless Defenders. NSFW language apparently. Haven’t listened yet myself.

I bet no one saw this coming…

New Wolverine Book Announced:

Good read about the new Thunderbolts book:
http://blog.newsarama.com/2012/11/20/marvel-now-next-big-thing-meet-the-new-thunderbolts/

Seems like Deadpool is gonna be a lot darker compared to his UXF personality. I don’t want to rush to judgement, but I like his characterization in UXF. I really don’t want him to be this over-the-top bloodmonger that it sounds like he’ll be in Thunderbolts.

Few preview art pages as well - not crazy about it, but I guess it’ll do:

Wow this was really long and maybe only 20 minutes out of the one hour and thirty minutes consisted of the interview with Bunn.

Still they plugged the Professor Layton anime movie, IE the guy Phoenix Wright is going beat up in that upcoming Professor Layton x Ace Attorney game for the 3DS, WHATCHAMEAN IT’S NOT A FIGHTING GAME lol! They also trashed Suicide Squad and while they liked the new Batman issue they pointed out a lot of flaws. HA HA BRAND ECH! The Marvel / Capcom fanboy in me was happy.

So in my best Sam Jack Nick Fury on the Marvel Animated Action Hour Block voice, this podcast is “HERO APPROVED!”

ASM this week was like… WHOA… Did not see that ending coming. :wow: Please use spoiler tags if you want to discuss.

Yea Newsarama had a headline talking about some big thing in ASM and I dared not read it. Can’t wait to check it out.

I never even knew there was a Marvel comics thread on this site. Just saw it in the recent activity threads by chance. I read through the last 4 pages just to get a feel for what’s going on in here. I didn’t think AvX was that bad. Like it’s no Thanos Imperative or Secret Invasion but at least the ending had an impact with some lasting consequences. You want to see the real stupid recent crossover events then look no further than Fear Itself; an event that was supposed to “change the entire Marvel universe forever” but instead had every damn consequence remedied within a few weeks, even the most important plot element of the entire event.

I guess I’m the only one who read the recent run of The Defenders (vol.4); I haven’t seen anyone mention it even around the days when the finale was released. Probably for the best really - I’ll save you the time reading it and just say don’t. It started out good with plot twists and cliffhangers that actually left me pretty curious and excited after most issues…all to end with a retarded variant of [details=Spoiler]“it was all a dream”.[/details]

On a positive note though the ending of Invincible Iron Man was really good. You really need to read all of the events leading up to it to get the full impact of it though and that goes all the way back to Secret Invasion. Although now that I think about it I was wrong earlier. The one consequence of Fear Itself that wasn’t brushed away immediately was Tony Stark’s involvement in it.

Welcome aboard AvariceX!

I started reading Defenders but I dunno, I don’t really care for Fraction’s dialog when he writes for teams so I dropped it at issue 3. I can’t really put my finger on what it is that Hickman does with dialog that Fraction doesn’t. Or how Bendis ‘used’ to write great dialog for teams back when he was good at it. Maybe it’s just personal taste.

Another surprise in Uncanny X-Force today too. I still have Wolverine and the X-Men to read. Really good week!

I’m not well-versed in the writers yet as I only started reading maybe a year ago because of the iPhone app. I will say what I noticed with Fraction’s dialog is that all the characters sounded the same except Red She-Hulk and Fury were a little more angry while Surfer and Strange used a few more esoteric words.

So far in the time I’ve been reading I’ve read all of:

collapsed for space

Spoiler

Avengers: The Initiative - amazing at least for the first while. I found it annoying when the main characters the series introduced were swiftly replaced with a team of established but mostly unknown characters. I started reading because a new team with new characters seemed like a great place to start, then half-way through I was stuck thinking “who the hell are these guys and how am I supposed to relate?” The ending brought it back nicely though.

Secret Invasion - obviously ties in with the above and at least as good. I can’t say anything bad about it at all.

**Invincible Iron Man **- No I haven’t read 600+ issues lol. I’ve read as far back as Secret Invasion maybe a little earlier which I think is probably around 50 issues or so maybe a little more I haven’t counted. No other comic I’ve read has stayed this good for this long (then again I haven’t read much). It’s just really good all the way through.

Fear Itself - Stupid stupid stupid. I already talked about this. It was actually really cool while it was going. [details=Spoiler]“Holy shit Bucky/Cap is dead?! Holy shit Thor?!”[/details]
. And then Marvel said “lol comic-book deaths”. At least [details=Spoiler]Steve is still Cap now.[/details]

**Cable & Deadpool **- This series was awesome for the first 2/3 of it or so. Really witty and intelligent, but by the end it was really obvious that the writers had checked out and were just trying to finish a contract for X number of issues. The last dozen issues were just Deadpool + some random spotlight character in a new environment. I sorta wish the series ended somewhere around Cable’s fight with [details=Spoiler]Silver Surfer[/details] even though there were some good moments after that.

Avengers vs X-Men - I pretty much already said what I think of this in my last post.

Guardians of the Galaxy / The Thanos Imperative - Holy shit I can’t praise this enough. They took an idea that from conception sounds completely retarded - [details=Spoiler]“Evil copies of everyone from an evil universe where they killed Death so they can’t die” - seriously?[/details] and turned it into one of the greatest examples of storytelling I’ve ever seen. I’d probably recommend this even to non-comic-readers.

**Defenders vol.4 **- Biggest middle finger of an ending since Mario 2. Fuck this series.

**Fear Itself: The Fearless **- Not bad, not great. A comic focused on Valkyrie is a pretty cool idea.

Doctor Strange: The Oath - Also not great. It ended like basically everything involving Strange: “I’m muthafucking Stephen Strange. I win. Magic.”

**X-23: Innocence Lost / Target X **- both were pretty good. Nothing spectacular but I’m a fan of X-23 so it was worth the read.

Oh man that took a lot longer to write than I thought it would. Also made me realize I’ve probably spent more money on this than I thought >.>

That ASM!!

WOW. Where did that come from?

Yo Avarice!

So are all the interesting Immortal Weapons dead and we’re still stuck with just Fat Cobra or did the rest come back at the end of Defenders?

Well one of my gripes with the Defenders was that it couldn’t possibly coincide with AvX because of certain grudges/allegiances

Spoiler

also Wakanda being invaded/destroyed twice.

but it turns out

[details=Spoiler]None of the consequences from The Defenders stuck whatsoever. Everything is back. Major spoilers below:

Spoiler

No Red She-Hulk/Silver Surfer romance

Spoiler

All the Immortal Weapons are back

Spoiler

Their discovery that Captain Nemo was Namor’s father never happened

Spoiler

Same with their discovery of the truth behind Prestor John

I guess the one consequence that did stuck (or rather came back) is that [details=Spoiler]Nul is back, alive and well…or at least he should be. Looks like they’re leaving it up to Hulk to deal with him this time.[/details]

[details=Spoiler]They seriously used fucking time travel to solve everything. It was like the end of Ocarina of Time but shitty

Spoiler

and not even decently written time travel, but “I’m Doctor Strange so I’m gonna go back and make this never happen” time travel.

[/details]

That’s prettty fucking lame, from what little I read I really did like Red She Hulk and Surfers relationship, it was fun.

Uncanny X-Force hit like a goddamn gut punch, as a dude with daddy issues that was a bit much, Sabes har har while he ran was a bit much though.

Also, Sub-Mariner: THe Depths is godlike,.
