I think you are strawmanning and misrepresenting the issue people have with this new "creative"decision. For starters the biggest issue I’ve seen from most people is that the motive behind this is just too transparent. The effort is to obviously attract more female readers but by doing so they are literally just working off the status of a male character and giving him a sex change. How does this empower female characters when they aren’t able to deliver on their own. We have plenty of female characters who could have easily gotten a push but instead they just literally stoled the thunder of a established male character all to promote a woman. If the idea about female empowerment is that they don’t need"no man"to support them then a move like this is as regressive and insulting as you can possibly get.
The logic behind the name staying the same is also highly questionable. Thor is a birth name and not a tittle or occupation so calling this new woman"Thor"is a blatant attempt to cash in on his name without having to worry about building her up as a her own unique character. To put it another way imagine if the new 52 comic Constantine now has a woman as the title character who’s name is still John Constantine. Screwing over the male characters and their fan base all to push female characters is the worst way to promote and empower women. Female characters shouldn’t have to borrow and steal existing male characters personas and names to get over, and if that’s going to be the trend going forth then people are right to call these kind of decisions lazy and disrespectful.
There are plenty of creative ways to go against the established status quo and present things in new compelling ways. The recent volume of hawkeye is a game changer for the character and the company and not because his dick was removed but rather because of the writing and quality behind the title. Likewise the same is true of the new 52 Wonder Woman and recent volume of captain marvel. People want to see real innovation and most of all quality artistic vision and I’m sorry to say this but switching a penis in for a vagina does not innovate or change things in a meaningful artistic way. It’s a superficial alteration that involves as much depth as adding the word"extreme" to the title.
In summary to this whole issue and this thread there are plenty of legitimate reasons to oppose a creative decision like this. Naturally some people will hide behind the "if you disagree with me you obviously hate women"rhetoric but to anyone who is intellectually honest and not trying to disguise a shallow marketing ploy, the truth is all too obvious. Keep in mind I’m not saying the title will be terrible or that she will be a bad character. However what I am saying is that there were better ways to attract a female audience and to build female characters. What’s also funny about this is that often times I will hear arguments such as"women aren’t trying to ruin your hobby or take away your characters they just want equal representation"yet a move like this inadvertently validates all those criticisms and complaints. There’s also been some unusual sexism in regards to this announcement such as a tweet from gail Simone who said something to the effect that Thor is finally awesome now. I personally would prefer a comic industry with the economy and ecosystem to see a title like rat queens and rai succeed in spite of the differences in demographics. If there’s anything anyone should take away from my post is that you don’t need to disempower men in order to elevate women. A female character like lady shiva is able to stand perfectly toe to toe with batman and at no point in time did DC need to short change bats to do this. Eventually I hope more people realize this and see that gender swapping is nothing more then faux equality.
It’ll certainly be a highly-followed run, if nothing else.

As long as the story is up to par, I don’t think people will have an issue with a female Thor. Of course, there are existing female characters that could use a bit of love from Marvel (and DC, for that matter), but I guess it’s too much work fixing them.

You can divide the hardcore comics fans into 2 sub categories: The story-whore and the art-whore. Both of them don’t care if a character is a woman or black or a frog. What matter to them is the name in the credits and if he did his job well. They are interested in top tier stuff.
What you need to do is to find, assuming you are into the story aspect, an experienced fan and he’ll be able to refer you to quality writers and their runs.
For example you usually can’t go wrong with a comic that has the name Grant Morrison on the front page.
Treating the comics industry as a single entity is misleading.
I can’t read most US comics anymore. I mean, Cap wasn’t shot, he was “phase out” or some crap. Elseworld storyline are great though stuff like Superman: Red Sons, such pime taradox.
Trying to read the main shit now is just too dumb. Marvel and DC are too scared to really do anything outlandish and Death in comics is beyond pointless so I dont know why they keep killing characters off just to bring them back a month to a year later.
The alternate universe shit is always on point though. Except Ultimate universe. That shit should have never been made.
