Speaking of the Australian, as far as I’m aware, about 40±-47?–of the victims were Australian and a lot of people on that particular plane were going to an AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia this weekend. That’s…extra unfortunate really, especially since I’m sure it will just help motivate some conspiracy theorists who are likely already spreading their idiocy around, though that idiocy is arguably not as bad as the American 24/7 news media with regards to this.
I swear, as jaded as I am, I always get more than a bit disgusted when they try to make it seem like it’s extra tragic only if Americans are killed…which is unfortunately basically something that they always try to do. It wouldn’t really surprise me if other countries do this too, but that still doesn’t make it any less disgraceful and this is coming from an asshole who knows he lacks tact and often sympathy or empathy.

@TheDamned I was actually listening to BBC radio this mprning and they too expressed the fact that it is unknown as of yet if any Americans were on the plane. I think the world probably looks at us anyways just to see our reaction or if we will get involved. Because you know damn well shit gets stirred if we show up to a party.

Well, there appears to have been confirmation that there was at least one American on board, but he seems to be–well, have been–a Dutch citizen who just had dual citizenship or something.
Regardless, I’m way more concerned that, outside of pretexts to escalate war (shut up, Zarga), one of the top AIDS researchers globally apparently got blown up.

I don’t understand why its more compelling to pursue the “were any of them American?” angle, although I suppose any of us can infer the reasons accurately enough. even if you’re looking specifically at political ramifications, a great number of the passengers come from NATO member countries (or does NATO not matter anymore? its hard to keep up)
(I think a more accurate question to ask about NATO is when has it ever really mattered or at least when has it made a difference for good, @pherai. Most of their actions seem to be pretty toothless or just for show.)
I want to amend what I said before by noting that I edited my last post: Wasted was indeed correct that it, at least thus far, it been verified that “only” 27 Australians were killed. I got confused with the number of Malaysians on-board, which was apparently 44.

Yeah, the 24/7 coverage of nothing for two straight months is what’s made me ignore CNN more than usual this year.
There’s been basically 24/7 coverage of this too, but at least there’s stuff actually developing. I doubt this will last two straight months though unless this blows up into war, especially since the bodies and the wreckage are in the open, on land and, pro-Russian rebels and looters aside, readily recoverable.
There’s all types of conspiracies about it going on now. The pro Russian rebels are saying that the plane was filled with corpses and shot down on purpose by Ukraine and the US to blame it on Russia. Can’t write this stuff man…
However a lot of reports and reporters in the region are speculating about rumors the rebels have been bragging about having land to air weapons to bring down an airliner. Apparently some video and audio just magically showed up with some of them saying it. But after the infamous Bin Laden tapes I wouldn’t doubt if it was manufactured and the translations are fake
And Newt Gringich and John McCain need to sit down and shut up postering like they really want to go to war with Russia. These same right wing chicken hawks have shown they know nothing about these international affairs and how to deal with them.
