Definitely best to stick with U1 for the most part since A LOT of people sleep on Makoto especially if they aren’t familiar with the match up.There’s also a good amount of resets and setups available from karakusa to not use U1.U2 is for characters and players who are very good at spacing and know the match up well and against Ibuki vortex shenanigans if you have trouble blocking the cross up/fake cross ups.
visit the matchup thread for Zangief info, my advice; stay the fuck away from him & counter, only attempt links if you have that shit 100% or it’s SPD time
attacking shoto wakeup is generally a bad idea, can you say shoryuken?? sometimes i do a very late fHP combo & catch them trying to shoryuken or something else, give it a try (when they don’t have ultra) if Akuma has Ultra1 be weary, & don’t jump at him at all, specially over fireballs. for guys that love abusing those lvl 2 FA, you can FA it yourself, but only use it once or twice
punish blocked ruffian kicks with cLK Hayate(LP) combo, be careful jumping in on Cody’s that use bingo or when they have ultra, crossups are usually free, cept for bingo & Ultra1. try not to follow up a Hayate(LP) with a ground attack, it has no frame advantage on hit, a Tsurugi might work if opponent likes spamming jabs after
this is obvious, but never just walk up or jump in on a charge character just sitting on his ass lol, i know man, i do this shit too sometimes, but you gotta break the habit, block, jump over, absorb their projectiles enough times & they’ll do something different
attacking Juri on wakeup is generally not a good idea, also always buffer super if you go for a Hayate combo & have Ultra, as soon as you see that Hayate land activate super
you should go into endless & look for some high level players
haha yeah you’re right about gief. I was having a lot of fun with that match cause I know she can make things frustrating for him with her mp. I was reckless. I usually only attack juri on wake up when she doesn’t have meter. I’ll also make sure to remember that about FA, some people do get a little annoying with it. Thanks for the advice man.
Fukiage > EX Tsurugi does slightly more damage than Tsurugi > EX Hayate, but not by much, and EX Hayate offers wonderful push to force someone in the corner, unlike the other option. I use the first when someone is cornered (either them or me) and I use the 2nd midscreen. With the first set, if you are cornered, you can actually cross them up and end it by pushing them into the corner with a dash on the ground.
so I finally decided to jump back on the Makoto boat and actually learn her for a few months. This will probably give me more reasons to keep the strat forum updated more often…aside from the fact that I’m the OP =/. Here’s some matches I played in ranked tonight.

vryu’s a makoto scientist! I love it!
Impressive victory over the Sak (which did some impressive things in that set from what I could see). I actually believe he has the ability to take daigo. I just think nerves got to him a bit in that set.
Every time I see a Tsurugi focused I hang my head, it’s so sad.
Btw sick meaty set-ups. That st.HK was nice, I gonna have to use that.
so v-ryu made it to SVB, nice to see him repping that Mak. even if he gets his ass beat
& Daigo, 44 win streak lol
Great job V-ryu! that crouching forward > hadouken was stopping all your attempts to get in but once you got in on Diago you gave him some problems! honestly I think you did great man
I knew your Makoto was good man but I didn’t know it was this good… Can’t wait to see more
@V-Ryu - Nice match against Daigo. . .not sure if it was nerves or just Daigo either way good solid effort man! Only thing I would like to see you try against the close range FB is more Tsurugi! He wasn’t throwing out focus too much so I would have went for that over the FA > Dash > stuff attempts. I find that easier and more reliable than going for focus.
Haven’t watched the second vid yet but I’m sure it will be sick. I envy you as I wish I could play against Daigo in a tournament. . .
A couple more V-Ryu videos at SVB:

Moar V-ryu at SVB

And more !
lol. good shit vryu. good thing none of the grapplers realized they could U1 all those tsrugis.
v-ryu needs moar sHK against Fei Long. That was a beating ya took. Otherwise awesome play. I wish I could be as smooth as you are with Mak.

That was pure rape against Kusanagi94. Crouching LK --> Ultra 1 ? Damn !
all those meaty setups really pay off, what would we do without v-ryu?? time to go practice
at about 1:47 after he does the fierce feint strong into mp hayate I believe he went for the Fuki-kusa option select but a karakusa came out, I was just wondering if that os always works for back jumps because sometimes the same thing happens to me, I dash forward and I don’t go under them so the fukiage doesn’t come out.
