Makoto Strategy and Match-ups

I’ve been lurking here since she was announced. There’s a lot I want to say but I want to get back to training.

At first I hated Tsurugi. Playing casuals today I ate so many reversal SPDs/Ultras from the resident Gief player. Turns out IA Tsurugi is a good bit harder than what I originally thought. If you guys are having trouble with it head to practice mode and focus working solely on IA EX Tsurugi. If you do it too late only one hit will connect however if you do it correctly both hits connect. So after further testing it turns out that IA Tsurugi is not prone to reversal command grabs (at the very least lp/fp SPD) so its a lot more useful than I thought.

I’ll test later whether or not you can jump out of Gief’s U1 after a correct IA tsurugi or that the same rules apply for the EX version against smaller characters later unless someone already has beat me to it. I also have the feeling this is old news anyways so lol on me XD

Random Gief notes:

  • s.MK is great at mid range and a useful AA.
  • c.MP is your sweet spot and because it has a wide hitbox like s.MP it looks like it could be a good AA as well.

More later.

EDIT - Unless this is fatigue talking if you do a correct IA tsurugi too close than you’ll eat a reversal command throw (and who knows what else) anyways. It can still be used at max range (but if you whiff you’ll eat something) and to punish tick setups/low pokes though.

Honestly, unless she grabs a hold of momentum she feels a bit too passive aggressive right now. And even when she has the momentum it feels like its a good chunk of the mixup is not in her favor. I don’t want to make any final judgment here, its still way too early. There has to be a good character here!

Akuma vs Makoto really…REALLY feels like a fucking lost cause. I mean, I’m far from the best with Makoto but the amount of trouble I had to go through to get in, just to have him use his “get out of jail free card” literally made me rage pick Viper and stun him 50 million times with fierce feint fierce combos.

Has anyone else experienced this match up and have any tips? I’d also assume Ultra 1 is the Ultra to use in this match, because Akuma’s air fireballs own Abare for free.

Deal with it same as most characters who has to rely on rushdown and pressure I suppose. Does her dash go under air fireballs easily?

His teleport is easy as to react to though. Just dash to where’s appropriate.

I’m pretty sure you can punish his teleport by dashing towards him and sweep him as his teleport ends.
EDIT: Nvm just tried in training mode, unless he’s teleporting towards you you can’t sweep him. But, what you can do is when he teleports away you can dash in and get an EX Hayate on him after it’s over.

wonderchef, you’re a fucking idiot.

warahk, just give her some more time.

I think I let my frustration with people judging characters so early get the best of me, so I apologize for the harshness and overall cavemanlike intelligence in my post.

Honestly, I think she’s going to take a lot of time to figure out what’s best and what isn’t. As it stands, when I lose, I haven’t yet said “Makoto can’t do this or Makoto can’t do that.” It’s always been “Shit, I messed up an IA Tsurugi,” or “Damn, forgot you can’t hit him with an HK Karakusa after MP Hayate,” or just little things where I know it was my fault and not Makoto’s.

It’s going to be a fun (and frustrating) time learning her ins and outs, but I’m going to contribute as much as I can. I hope you’ll stick around a bit longer and do the same.

Again, sorry for my reaction. Its just I keep coming across posts where people are saying so and so is terrible, despite the fact that the game JUST came out. Half of those people probably played once, got rocked by a flowchart Ken, and just wrote it off as the new character being ass. It’s really starting to get to me…

Makoto is far from terrible.

I’ve been playing Mak similar to how I played Cammy in vanilla. Get in there, keep them from doing things, and beat the crap out of them… Unfortunately when they can zone or worse; teleport, out, it does make maining Mak a very difficult road. Her Hayate has a significantly slower startup than her 3s Hayate, and each time I use it I end up eating Fireballs, admittedly I’ve only been toying with her Super incarnation for approx an hour, but still. I was a halfway decent Mak on 3s, I simply cant touch a “good” Fireball turtle with her… It makes me Rage pick Cammy and proceed to Hooligan them until their brains mar the cleanliness of the streets XD

With fireball characters you have to learn to IA Tsurugi over them her dash just doesn’t cut it sometimes.

Very true it will take Mak players quite some time to figure out what works, how it works, and when it will work. A lot of people assume she’s bad after like a hour of play with her and that first hour of play was super bad for me as well but I know it’s gonna take a long time. I see the mind games there as well as how to poke safely. The problem is those FB characters for me right now and weird angled jumps that get me. Her damage/stun ISN’T bad even without meter you can get some good stuff. She has a lot of tools but it’s just gonna take time to get used to using them effectively.

Keep ya head up and grind it out as great things are to come of it fellas!

I’m singing the “She’s crap” song too, but I’m still playing her because I’m a subborn bastard, like her character, and I WANT her to be good so I’m going to keep trying. Besides, I still have Viper anyway.

In regards to the Akuma match up, the way I played it previous made it seem worse than it was. For some odd reason I wasn’t being patient. Tried to RTSD when the shit wasn’t working. After I stopped trying to RTSD all day, I was able to get in easier.

I am disappointed with makoto. Why does she feel so damn sluggish and mechanical unlike 3rd strike. Even when she dashes there is a long ass pause when she stops. Well, this is my first SF4 game I played. I am going to train with her and go online one more time. Feels like the worse character I played.

at least shes not Dan…

Makoto’s basics are as follows:

Now that you know her basics, you are ready to learn her more advanced techniques and strategies. These will be covered at a later date, when people have had the game for long enough to know what the fuck they’re talking about.

Apology accepted. I plan on continuing to play her as a 2nd and I know there’s a lot about her gameplay I don’t understand. Like you said i think she has a very steep learning curve. There’s a lot of people in socal tinkering with her (richard from these forums, andyocr, me, and a lot of others) so im sure we’ll get a lot of good info in these forums.

Man I knew this would happen, why does Europe have to get things later! I’m going crazy with everyone playing the game and I can’t!

Good stuff still guys I really want to contribute and give input but I havn’t got the game, trying to just write things down and keep up with the new stuff.

Really glad theres lots of postive stuff coming from people, I hope I can be 1/100th as helpful.

Don’t forget about me! Maybe we can get some games in at my place one night, stream some crazy Makoto goodness to the world

C’mon guys give her some time. The game just came out today for most people so we just have to keep practicing with her. (But then again I can’t really say anything about Makoto yet because I don’t get the game till Friday lol . Not to mention I’m new here ).

Haha, my bad. Will too! I think James Chen is using her as well. I’m down stream sometime, we could do a bunch of concept matches.

I like Makato, but in this game, if your gonna be a 1-tric-pony, you’ve gotta make sure your 1 tric is broke. Makato doesn’t have anything that hard to beat from what I see.

Just Theory Fighting though.
