Making Your Stick Pretty: A Custom Stick Art Guide/Tutorial

I’m still having trouble. I use elements 7 and I can’t find that layer mask tab. I found a different way of doing it, but it doesn’t seem right. Also what are some ways I can make the lines look like they haven’t been cut? As of now it still looks rough around the edges.

ok d3v, i have a question, i am working on my first stick mod ever, im working on a SE fight stick and i have the picture art, the buttons and the ball top that i want. The problems is my art is too small, and when i enlarge it i feel it becomes too distorted, any tips, i am a total photoshop nub, i mean i can follow directions well enough to set the art in the SE template but is there anyway to sharpen the image at all, any assistance would be amazing

Hmm I searched for about 15 minutes now but I wont seem to find it anymore. Dont know which thread I found it in, too bad I read your answer just now

Anyways, heres my piece for my V3. Got it printed today and will finish the mod tomorrow.

I’m sorry, I have a feeling this is a “asked a million times already” question but I simply can’t find it, maybe I’m just looking in all the wrong places… but anyway, my questions - for a TE stick, how do you get the art printed? How much does it cost? And will I need to cut out the holes for the stick and buttons myself? I just spent over half an hour looking for answers on here and on youtube, I’m just not seeing it somehow.

If you live in the United States, which in this case you do, printing it out at your local FedEx Kinko’s is your best bet.

When printing @ Kinko’s make sure you print FULL SIZE, not SIZE TO FIT when printing out the PSD file.
Make sure you hide the layers such as the button layout, stick and dustwasher, and the turbo panel, in the PSD file.
Print it on 80lb cardstock paper
after printing it on cardstock, get it lami-labeled. If they don’t know what a lami-label is, tell them to get it laminated and labeled.
The cost for doing all of this is about $5-8.

As for replacing the art here is a thread to show you step-by-step on how to get your TE modded with your art :

Hope this helps

Hold SHIFT when resizing with the transform tool (CTRL+T).

Any chance you could put markings to indicate where the button/stick holes will be?

Thanks, that’s great. That’s exactly the kind of thread I was looking for.

love how his palm is right in the middle of where the stick goes - either way this is really sick ^^

^^^ dont quote images

where do you guys find hi-res pics to put on the stick? Seems like i need something like 1800x1800 pixels just to be able to use it on the stick. Or do you guys use free transform on regular 500x500 pics and put it on?

You can find some good high-res pictures from creativeuncut.com
kawaiidream.net was also a good site to get some good high-res pics but that site is down and out.

you can make it transparent in Photoshop.
-Just select it in layers section
-Use the Magic Wand and Select all of Makoto
-Hit “Delete”
-Voila! Makoto is Transparent!

Would you happen to have the PSD for that? I don’t want to use the art, but I want to have a look at the layers to figure out how you did it.

in photoshop i just change the picture to 300pixels/inch, under image -> image size

then it fits great

Is there a psd template of a te stick that covers the full top area of the stick? I ordered a full plexiglass because I want it to cover the entire top up to the edges.

Or can somebody tell me the dimensions?

Arthong has it somewhere in his thread and his site.

Could I get some thoughts on this?

Wanted to use this image for my stick

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs21/f/2007/278/0/4/Umbreon_Wallpaper_by_Aminako.jpg

Here was the initial try
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/2289/brakki.jpg (pic is huge, didn’t want to insert it)

But I didn’t really like how huge Umbreon turned out to be. So I isolated him and changed my font to look a bit more SF4’ish. Here’s the outcome:

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/942/hrap3brakki.jpg (still huge)

I really liked the blue moon from the original picture. Don’t know how to “complete” the moon once I’ve taken Umbreon out though =/

Also, does anyone know the font for an HRAP3? The part that says “Real Arcade Pro”.

I just finished working on this one and I am looking for some advice on what I should add to the left side or what I should do to it to make it pop more, and what colors I should use for the buttons, or what color/type of background might look better. Thanks for any advice in advance

I have a question. I have a custom case that I’m repainting and redoing the artwork on. It’s made of wood, and the layout is custom, so I can’t get plexi unless I make it myself. Anyways, I want to add artwork to it after I’m done, and was wondering something. I’ve been experimenting with painting over glossy paper, and it seems to resist soaking up the paint pretty well. What do you think of this: after I paint the stick, before applying the clearcoat, glue the artwork on with some dry paste and then clearcoat on top of it? That way, the clearcoat is over the artwork, and the artwork won’t wear down as I play. Any advice?

First time working with Photoshop, first time making art for a stick. Very nice guide, however I tried my best, but the problems I had were placing Venom the correct distance from the stick and finding the correct art to go under the buttons. I also had trouble centering the buttons correctly, but I’ll just find a substitute if the symbols don’t fit correctly.

Just keep in mind I wanted it a bit simple, it is my first time. Advice would be very much appreciated.

My updated Stick

I have a Redoctane box that I have continuously upgraded through the years. The last incarnation looked like this

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/6321/0316090038b.jpg

That one was made about 5 years ago, very basic looking, I really didn’t know what I was doing in Photoshop. It originally was PS2 based, but I later upgraded to a wireless Xbox 360 PCB.

This article really helped me understand how to build a better template, and now it will be very simple for me to swap in different character art.

This is the new artwork on how it looks now:
