Make new sprites, starting with Morrigan

I think we should make new sprites ourselves.

Sure, people are going to say that we can’t, or that if we do, they’ll look retarded.

Screw them.

I can animate as well as the artists at Capcom. It’s hard, and it takes time, but I can do it.

But, if I use some old Capcom sprites as reference, it could be done a hell of a lot quicker.

I propose that any and all of the amature sprite artists on this site get together, use the old Morrigan sprites as reference, and we make a new Morrigan sprite set.

Then, we send it to Capcom. We put it on the net. We hack into the Roms of CvS1 and 2, and stick our new sprites in there.

And if it goes well, we move on to the next tired, old characer.

All this has been said before. All this has been flamed before.

I don’t care. I still think it could be done. Nay sayers are assholes. Thinking big gets things done.

And if none of you are in, I’ll just do the whole job myself.

I’LL SHOW YOU ALL! :encore:

applauds

The street fighter community needs to get into hacking.

I’m not an artist, but I’ll try.

cool idea, good luck with it.

I’d love to do something like that… i’m no pro… but i’d try.
I see everyone complaining about this… but noone tries.

Word!

My email is jon_holmes@hotmail.com

I’ll get to work on at least finding the pre-existing sprites for the Morrigan stuff right now.

I can draw the new frames this week, scan them over the weekend, and send them out to get people’s opinion from there about how things are going from there.

Then, it will just a few changes and corrections, setting photoshop to the right resolution, picking out the best colors, and getting to the really hard stuff. But if it’s a team effort, we could get it done in no time.

Let’s kick Capcom’s ass and show them we love them, by beating them at their own game!

What is with the obsession with Morrigan’s sprites?

It’s old. Real old.

It’s the best example of the fact that Capcom doesn’t feel the need to make many new sets of sprites for their “new” games anymore.

The Morrigan sprite is over ten years old now.

oh, and here’s another site

cheers

It couldn’t hurt. Good luck!

Thanks.

Last night, I did 20 drawings after work. They include animations for ducking, a new taunt, standing jab, fierce, short, and roundhouse. I used the existing sprites as reference, but I didn’t trace them. They are, in a word, insane, and really have no buisness being in a game with “realistic” animation.

By frame two of Morrigan’s standing roundhouse, her left leg has traveled from a normal standing position to being hooked around completely backwards, her heel touching the back of her head.

So, I changed that. But not too much. It’s still physically impossible, but at less so.

This weekend, I’ll get to scanning everything in and start working on the actual pixel stuff.

This is where I will need the most help.

I also have a PC readable version of the Dreamcast CvS2. I’m not sure yet how the hack in and replace the old Morrigan spite, but I’m working on it.

but is it animish ??? like the old one

keep it up man

So wait, are you making your own frames to increase the animation? Because I would think that then it would become a much harder job of actually putting the game together.

Also, I think it would be best to hack a mame rom, just because it would get more attention I think. Then again CvS2 is the perfect platform for this.

I really really like the way I went about with the body on my Morrigan sprite, pretty much because I used Capcom’s exact method from Gem Fighter and just applied it to the real size, without making the sprite my own.

And to the people who post the Morrigan GG sprites, just stop. It’s what pissed me off in my post. It’s not about making an awesome Morrigan like that, we could make that, but that’s not the purpose.

Please post what you’ve done so far, this is really interesting.

Nevermind sprites. Capcom doesn’t feel the need to make new 2D fighting games anymore. Why should we show appreciation for Capcom when they don’t show appreciation for us?

You might keep hitboxes/ranges in mind while creating them, unless you know of somebody who could patch those as well. As for implementing them, not sure if CvS/2 or newer still uses tiling, but if so, I’d guess they come out in 64x64 “blocks” that get pasted together. And if they’re like CPS2 stuff, each head and appendage is a seperate pic, placed together carefully.

In photoshop, you could halve the OG pics’ resolution to begin with; change to “vector graphics” mode, zoom out, and touch up the art (if that’s easier).

I really would like to see the aftermath of this. I’d also like to nominate Sakura as #2 in line. Not that hers is bad per se, but just imagine “the new ones”.

EDIT: “W.O.W.!” to that B5 sprite. Good conveyance of attitude there as well.

Cammy, Gief, or Sagat would make fine runner-ups. Many people want their green-bikini/red-beret Cam back.

So are all the other Vampire sprites from the original game. That doesn’t answer the question: why Morrigan?

Thanks for the tips. That’s the side of stuff I really don’t know about yet. But luckily, DC games seem to have a high level of hackability.

And I’m trying to get in contact with the person who did that B5 sprite. Their site is posted above.

I copped that stance for the new Morrigan taunt.

It’s seroiusly a cool idea, and i can Help with Animation and rendering if ya want to…But thik of other sides, like what if Capcom or whatever made Problems with the site(and you, why?? Cause the site is fully responsible bout any silly stuff like these…)
so if ya really gonna do something like that, then do not make any back ups on this site or even a thread…Do another HTML for your own, trust me they will Blame this site and not you due to the facts that this site ran an was opk for lettin an idea like what ya said goes on…and i seroiusly dont like to let this site Goes down ya know…

hmmmm, what ya think??
Think of the concequinces and problems that May COme and specially if Something like capcom wanna Take it that far (still you will be agianst the low by anyway)

good luck with the project, dont die out. I may be able to help in the future with art

Because, before CFJ, Morrigan was the only sprite from the vampire series to show up in games where she looked totally wrong (namely, the Capcom vs SNK series). Now, we have Demitri, Anakaris, Jedah, and Felicia.

But more than that, Morrigan’s are the most over used set of sprites. Sure, Ryu is in tons of games, but he’s has five completely different incarnations. (SF2, SF3, SFA, CvS, SvC).

Morrigan has the record for appearing in the most games without ever being re-sprited. (Vampire 1-3, MvC 1&2, CvS 1&2).

Well, actually, the SFA Ryu sprite also apeared in seven games (SFA 1-3, and the four vs games). But that’s besides the point.

Out of all the Vampire sprites, Morrigan’s are the ones I think we are all most tired of seeing.

For me, the Morrigan sprites symbolizes the feeling of getting a “new” game from Capcom that is actually old as dirt in terms of graphics and gameplay, and thinking to myself “I would make new sprites for Capcom, for free, if they would let me”.

So, taking them on first seems appropriate.

Why, do you have a better suggestion?

And Beholder, please email me asap.

jon_holmes@hotmail.com

Infact, everyone who wants to help should email me asap. I already have pencil sketched animations to work on turning into pixel art. I could email them out this weekend.

We can do it. I would estimate that if five of us did three sprites a week, we would be done with all the animation in a month. I could have all the animations sketched out and scanned by this Sunday.

So, we’re pretty much good to go.

There may be snags. My animation might be flawed, as I haven’t yet tested it out. Some of us might be really sucky artists. Hell, I may suck. But we’ll never find out unless we try.

And personally, I think it will kick ass. At the very least, MUGEN players will have something new to play with, and we’ll all have something to show for our portfolios.
