I feel like Draper was representing the audience in that blackface scene. We had to have someone to relate to, since that scene was kind of obnoxious. Also, it would be interesting if he were to represent what we consider a progressive way of thought like Kinsey shows, but I question how progressive it really was- it’s easy to look at the era of the show and write people off as being racist/sexist etc. But you wonder if a lot of people would have been as offput as Draper was. So maybe it was the show actually being fair to the era and the scene.
That was brilliant. Particularly the point at which she said the line.
I loved that episode where it showed women as a spectacle, especially Joanie. The fadeout to credits with her playing the instrument singing a silly french song, nothng more than entertainment for the men really drove it home.
One more thing, Don was spot on when he called Betty a child. Emotionally she’s nothing more than that, she can’t see beyond the range of what could affect her. That’s the scary part, for all her emotional outbreaks and vulnerability, she has no capability to empathize with others.
I’m so with Peggy on that Bye Bye Birdie song being obnoxious, and I liked her little smirk after this most recent episode when they showed the commercial to the people who ordered it.
For some reason I wanted Peggy and Joan to start making out. When they were talking in the break room about Peggy’s ad for a roommate, I was thinking “just kiss her already.” And then Peggy was like “Please show me how to do it,” and was like
…but, on the inside.
stuff
[details=Spoiler]I almost thought Joan was going to introduce her to her old roommate…the one she had the encounter with.
I knew grandad smelling things that weren’t there was a bad sign, I wonder if the salt was a related thing?
I hate the girl who might be Peggy’s new roommate. But I hate her in a good way.
I love Sal’s wife. All the wives on this show are awesome in one way or another.
Peggy’s mom, on the other hand, is motherfucking CRAZY. YOU’RE GONNA GET RAPED, YOU KNOW.
Classic roman-catholic mom of the time. The girl who is going to be Peggy’s new room mate has been on a bunch of other shows. It once again proves my theory that all you have to do is a guest spot on one TV show, then you get a bunch of gigs…
The best written show on television hype really needs to toned down. At its best its white people with problems. Its Melrose Place. But I do enjoy the dull quality thats put into show. Its probably why I to like Peggy so much.
The Peggy/Don relationship - I don’t know what Peggy really wants from it. He’s a mentor to her, but something else. The line where Don says something about tools I rewinded about 5 times to understand exactly what Don said. Even then it was difficult, but what I heard is “Loosen the tool in your toolbox” or “go get fucked”. And she immediately did that.
All the woman on this show are beautiful and dedicated wives. And the thing about Joan someone written is so right. I don’t know what the fuck she says, this bitch is a mountain of woman. Good fucking god I may never get over the presence of this broad.
I cant stand betty. She’s a relentless bitch. I missed the first season so I don’t understand why Don married her. Fake identity and all. Trapped with 3 kids. What was he thinking?
Yeah, when I saw her smirk I lol’d. I shared the same sentiment.
acting
[details=Spoiler] I thought the grand/daughter did a great job of conveying all the real emotions that would go on in a girl her age. Especially the resentment she has towards her mother, which at the time seemed well-deserved. Betty seems to be teetering on the edge of madness or an eventual suicide attempt.

The best part of the episode was showing the dichotomy of a WWI and WWII vet, separated by different ideologies and psychological impacts; effectively in a tug-and-war game with a future Vietnam vet.
I started laughing when the grandad pulled out the fan, because I knew exactly where he was going…
And Draper was Korean War, Betty’s dad was WW1 and maybe WW2 also? I wasn’t clear on if he was in both.
edit: There’s an interesting trend being pushed by the writers, as it relates to enthusiasm for war across the generations. Grandad was all about killing them krauts and all that, and of course WW2 is well-received. Korean War we see as being much less a source of pride through the eyes of Draper, and then we have the Vietnam War looming in the background, which public perception is/was very negative about.
Whatever gets people to watch the show, but maybe you have a point.
Wrong.
Wrong.
You should probably check out the first season. I actually started with Season 2, before seeing the first one, but even so things were pretty easy to understand. This season, maybe less so.
saying mad men isn’t a greatly written show…and then going on to gross misinterpret everything in the show is a ironic thing to do.
anyway, i just watched the last episode last night and i didn’t realize peggy’s job was so demanding, although i guess i should’ve since she has an office.
the old man that’s about to let his son throw his trust fund away jai alai was pretty funny. i liked how don almost flipped his shit when the guy was downtalking his pops at the dinner table, another reason why i like don.
don’s son is too young to eventually go to be in 'nam by about 5 years though.
Jai Alai is still fairly popular in certain areas like Miami, I wonder if they’re actually going to surprise everyone and make the spoiled son’s business venture successful.
I swear Betty is a kid. Her constant regression to childlike tendencies whenever she’s faced with emotional problems is getting over the top. But then the end scene, where they show her with the “prison” stripes… godlike.
I love how Don reflexively said “nobody” when she asked who the person on the phone was. Dude isn’t even sleeping with her, but he’s already got the guilt reflex.
I’m on the fence about the return of Sopranos-esque dream sequences. They’re very stimulating and interesting, but overemphasized and highlighted to the point where it’s distracting in my opinion.
One thing I realized about this show is that every character is fucked up in some way, and the situations/plot of the show force viewers to relate to one or more of the characters, in turn leading the viewers to admit that they’re fucked up too.
[details=Spoiler]I left my lunch pail on the bus and I’m having a baby.
Genius.
Weird Medgar Evars cameo in the dream sequence, though. I mean I understand that it was mentioned earlier in the episode wand was supposed to be in the public consciousness, but it was just… It seemed too lucid, to rational to appear in a dream, at least so directly.
And HOLY SHIT it’s Yeardly Smith as a nurse. Lisa Simpson!!
I really dug how the hospital sorta looked like an old sanitarium from a movie.
And look at that teacher, throwing the vagina at Don!! What the hell…[/details]
Though given what happened in this episode I can’t help but wonder if we’re going to see some horribly insensitive racial ads in the near future.
oh i didn’t catch that as a medgar evers cameo, just thought grandpa was chillin with the nigs lol
and anybody that’s been watching this show HAD to know that the teacher would try and get with don…sheeeit, they almost had don tear down an asian chick in the first season now i’m just waiting for them to show some black chick throw the pussy at him.
