Mad Men Thread (Season 3 begins 8/16 on AMC)

Sally’s great. Glen isn’t. He would be more interesting with a better actor, but that kid brings down most of the scenes he’s in. It’s not a coincidence that the only scene in the last ep that really misfired was his conversation with Don in the elevator. Not only was Weiner Kid’s performance unconvincing, but Jon Hamm was struggling to act convinced.

Well I actually did like him when he was that weird little kid creeping on Betty, it was an interesting contrast to Don (handsome, powerful man who ignores her and cheats on her) vs Glen (weird little kid but worships her and gives her all his attention). Now obviously the kid is older and likes Sally, so an interesting plot would be:

 • He travels all the way to see Sally
 • It took time, money, and an unfinished paper to get there
 • “I promised the guys I’d do something with a girl so we have to make out/have sex whatever”
 • Sally says no, but Glen advances just like he did with Betty when she was in the bathroom
 • Don finds out and reprimands him, maybe even punches him and realizes that sometimes he takes stuff too far (like he did with Lane which caused him to kill himself)

Just an idea, it would be better if the kid was creepy instead of just stiff, unfunny, and uninteresting.

i think i would have fell out of my seat of glen asked megan for a lock of her hair

It’s weird how I felt the ominous sign of death mid-season, only to be off about who the person dying would be. I figured it would be Megan, but I guess it’s still too soon for tragedy to befall her just yet.

Lane’s background made us privy to his psyche, his sense of failure and shame was obviously exacerbated by his relationship with his strict father. Don’t let the now-doting wife fool you either, in the previous seasons she was quite robotic and displayed no affection towards him. It was most likely his recent successes that brought on her behavior.

It’s a shame he had to go out in such a fashion.

R.I.P. Lane.

This is going to hit Joanie more than the rest, her dismissive behavior + his unrequited “love”.

Oh and that awkward Jeffrey-Dahmer-In-Training Kid just annoys me with his existence. Even when he’s not creepy he’s still annoying as hell. Damn weiner kid.

SC[J]DP

That’s the game Mad Men plays. It either pays no heed to the expectations we’d have for a normal TV show or it deliberately defies them.

Honestly, despite all the obvious intimations of death (going right back to episode one of the season, with Megan standing at the edge of the balcony), I was fully prepared for season 5 to end without any major deaths to speak of.

he looks like the type that would start masturbating in front of the giraffes at the museum.

Couple of things to ponder about as you look mournfully out your window while swirling a glass of rye…

Sorry, I was behind.

Visualization of Don and Peggy’s relationship…
Mad Men : A Brief Visualization of Don and Peggy

This write-up is actually really good, specifically this bit…

Damn I wish I could just steal that and pass it on as my own thought.

Man, such a good show.

What a shot.

And I thought there was something interesting about it being Pete that found Lane (Joan tried the door, but technically it was Pete that looked over and saw him first), considering they were the two partners most at odds. (Although Pete is at odds with everyone, which is unavoidable because of his seemingly so punchable face.)

Also I like that Don’s speech to Lane to start over, this is a fresh start, etc. was like identical to the one he gave old Freddy Rumsen when he was sent away to rehab.

He really likes telling people to start fresh…just not Peggy.

DAT FORESHADOWING!

took me a sec.
nice.

I will fight anyone who says that this isn’t the best season of television ever. Ok, I won’t actually fight anyone, but I’ll look at you in a disapproving fashion.

I’m still not sure what I just watched. I think it was so good that it went over my head. Now I have to step my game up.

I’m not sure what I saw either, and I’m not sure if I liked it. I may have to watch again tomorrow, because my initial reaction was disappointment.

That being said…

Tonight’s episode (Season 5 finale)

Spoiler

-How hysterical was the Pete/Train cop scene? When Pete started acting tough, you KNEW what was coming. And that didn’t make it any less funny.
-How great was the scene of Don and Peggy in the movie theater?

I may have been spoiled by the massive plot movement in the previous two episodes, but my initial feeling about this episode is that I’m either missing something major, or…It may have kind of sucked.

I think there was certina level o expectation from the finale given the overall impact of the entire season. I’m not saying it was a bad episode by any means, but there’s no way it could have lived up to the overall power of season 5. That ebing said, it was still a brilliant episode with many brilliant moments. I agree that it may take a second viewing to let the epsiode fully sink in…

What’s Pete’s record? Isn’t it like 0-4 now?

Poor Lane too, easily became my favorite character once he peaced out Pete. :<

i didnt like that last episode at all.

seems like everyone just got out of character abruptly.

wassup with sterling getting all exhibitionist?

the scene with don and peggy in the theater got uncomfortable for a second too. it was nice to see them bump into each other but it kind of sad to see don still kind of miss her that much.

really not sure what else to think about this episode.
Pete goes home, Trudy sees his face, “Did you get in a car accident again?” Can’t tell her the truth about the train, wouldn’t tell her that Lane popped him the first time.

Roger on display in front of his window, arms spread wide with that huge grin on his face.

Draper’s long walk from Megan’s commercial–kinda felt like he was detaching from the relationship. Watching her screen test almost seemed like he was mourning a lost loved one…he arranged the deal, but it’s never go be the same between them again type of thing. Hard to read the meaning in Don’s expression when he’s watching that screen test

Don ain’t saying shit about asking for Lane’s resignation…wonder how that will all play out.
i think this was a weak season, which i know is an unpopular opinion round these parts.

These are my impressions though

Pete tried to become what Don used to be when pete first started and failed and was constantly busted down back to beta male every time he tried to man up.

Don tried to start fresh by changing his ways and playing the role of the doting newlywed husband and trying to maintain the perfect relationship and happiness. He thought this new love could cover up his past issues and he supressed his issues for a long time but they resurfaced full blown with Megans and their relationships imperfections becoming apparent and ,the straw that broke the camels, lanes suicide. Both Lane and his brother killed themselves after being dismissed by Don while they are in a time of need, thus the apparitions of his brother. All wounds are now fresh and re-exposed and hes in the same spot he was in when we met him and maybe even worse because at least in the first few seasons he could at least take pride in his work. In this season that has been tainted with Joan being whored out and Ginsberg showing him up. At the end we see Don at a bar, he is approached by a woman who wants to hook him up with her friend, he displays an interested smirk. Playboy Don is back to drown his sorrows with booze and pussy yet again (and thank god for it too, hes been too boring this season).

Roger has become liberated through his divorce and his discovery of LSD. He is definitely on LSD in the scene where he is naked at the window.

Peggy has become Don and in the scene where they are in the theatre together they meet as equals.

Joan became a whore.

Megan ultimately compromised and sold out now shes half actress and half corporate tool and can no longer feel independent after owing her only acting gig to Don. I think Don watching the reel was him realizing that what her mother said was true and she just really wasnt that good of an actress, so he decided to hook her up with the commercial gig so she could save face and have a self esteem boost.

So, it was a weak seaosn because you didn’t like where the story went? I’m confused. I judge the quality of a season by the whole of it’s moving parts. It had some of the best written episodes ever put on television, best directed and best acted. The storylines were tight, the execution was spot on perfect. I honestly think it may be the best season of television ever.

Of drama television. Simpsons season 8 is still the best season of television ever made.

I’m glad other people thought the last episode was just alright. It was a “This is the wrap up, last week was the big bomb, look the more things change the more they stay the same”

The best part of teh episode for me was Joan having control of the partners meeting. That was lolz city.

I don’t think that was the case at all, a few points.

 1. Megan revealed her sheisty well before she was even on the commercial. Remember her friend had asked her to speak to Don about the part. Yet Megan backstabbed her friend and co-opted the role for herself.

 2. I think when Don was watching the reel, he realized that Megan really enjoyed acting, it seemed to be one of the cases where she was really alive(compared to her rather lackluster demeanor at SCDP save for a few cases. And by getting her the part, Don was stepping out of the picture and letting her have her happiness. Remember what he said to Peggy, about how “When you help someone succeed, they move on”? That’s probably what he was envisioning while walking away from the set.

 3. Chicks be hella sheisty, notice the girl who came up to Don at the end? That was Megan’s friend who had asked Megan for help getting the part, I guess snakery runs in that entire circle.
