Bison’s lack of solid anti-air is the biggest culprit for how I rate some of these matchups. Chun Li, Dee Jay and Blanka’s normals give Dictator shit fits and you have to work really hard for those specific matches. Everyone else is semi manageable, assuming you know how to poke and the correct spacing.

With some matchups, it’s hard to gauge if the new stuff changes it too much. I think some of you guys are overrating the Honda match, it’s far from the “mess up once, die horrible death” situation it was in ST. Don’t know how I feel about Gief/Sim, myself, you can’t run all over Sim any more if you get in, with the reversal super business, and some of Gief’s new tricks make your standing forward zoning a bit harder and in some cases less effective.
raakam, blanka 4-6? why? i always felt like the match was even, and if you get a lead can he really catch you?
My take on matchups
This is generally how it goes for me.
Ryu: 5.5 - 4.5 DR invinc has made such a huge difference
Ken: 4.5 - 5.5 Wake-ups, arcing DP, knee smash ticks, all bad for bison.
E-Honda: 4.5 - 5.5
Chun-li: 4.5 - 5.5
Blanka: 5.5 - 4.5
Zangief: 4.5 - 5.5
Guile: Even
Dhalsim: Even
T-Hawk: 3.5 - 6.5 Am I the only one who seldom beats the best Hawks this matchup?
Cammy: 6 - 4 but a great Cammy could pose more of a threat.
Fei Long: 6.5 - 3.5
Dee Jay: 4.5 - 5.5
Boxer: Even
Claw: 6 - 4
Sagat: 6 - 4
I’m always looking for advice on how to attack Hawk so feel free
Have to agree with that ridiculous tick being the best that Blanka can do… it seems almost uncounterable at times and I’m not sure why.
But in this matchup its definitely about spacing, most of your moves can stuff most of Blankas at just the right distance (And for me its about keeping away from that tick, heh) In any case, some moves I use a lot in this fight are:
Definitely is a very fast paced match so reflexes are important. LOL… I once played Blanka like 7 times straight then played a Ryu and it appeared to be in slow motion, guess it was an optical illusion…
For me, this type of match is a “Run Away” scenario. You keep away and poke him to death. If you mess up and he manages to get close, you’re usually in trouble. If you manage a knockdown on a good Blanka player, it’s not a good idea to try cross him up or jumping at him, because you’ll eat an Up ball for free and then he’s on you like flies on shit. Generally jumping towards Blanka is not super safe, actually. His electricity will typically beat you clean. I just try and neutral or back jump with HK to stuff some of his approaches, as well as timing a proper j.mp juggle. Though that can backfire if you mess up, because you tend to fall right at his feet at that point, and Blanka will be on you like flies on shit. He puts Dict on the defensive, which is not an ideal situation for you.
You still have tools to beat him, but the fact is that he denies you more options than you do him. It’s what it boils down to: who controls what space better, and I really feel that in this match, Blanka generally has more control.
Gishdeath, Real Decoy, Papichao all come to mind as good Blanka players, and those are the guys I’m basing the match up on.
My 2 cents worth of advice coming up:rofl: Actually, i don’t seem to have much trouble against hawk or honda, which seem to be a lot of people’s problem matchups with dictator, and a lot of the same tactics apply IMO.It’s a run away game.If you get in close be careful of command throws, mind your spacing, and don’t do any hk Scissor kicks, unless you’re confident you won’t get command thrown.LK scissors are your friend, if you have to scissor kick, use them, you’ll be safer on block.Use headstomp a lot to get in and hit and get back out.For hawk dives, when you see one coming mash standing LP-the increased priority is very useful, and stuffs them clean a lot of the time.In the air use jLK.It has nice priority for beating hawk’s normals and bison’s jump is nice and high, and tough to hit cleanly.Watch out for that fucking horrible flying upward dragon punch type move he has, it’s a bitch for bison. If you see an opponent using it, bait and punish.Stay out of throw range, and ESPECIALLY get the hell away from his sweep-it’s range is stoopid, and if he catches you he’s all over you on wakeup with his tick game.If he gets close on the ground, crMK poke and fierce crusher to get away if you have space behind him, or jump back if you havent, but don’t land yourself in the corner. If you get trapped in the corner look for his jump forward tick game and counter the jump with stLP and then immediately fierce Crusher out.Alternatively look for a chance to slide out under him as he jumps but this is riskier. You can also use DR up and then over him, or super out if you have meter. His jump back is quite slow too, you can catch him with a fierce crusher as an anti air a fair bit if he’s running away, just be careful to time it late.Bisons hitbox to take damage is in the BACK of the crusher, the hitbox to hit is in the front, so if you use it late you’ll be less likely to take a hit if he hawk dives of roundhouse kicks you.
For me generally this match goes well if i play keep away, make him work to get in, and punish his mistakes then run away again.
Yep, me too.Run away all day. This is one of my least fave dictator matchups just cos’ so much of dictators best stuff is dangerous to try against blanka. If you get cornered bison’s standing LP is a good anti air, and then fierce crusher away.If you can bait his electricity then a crusher will beat it clean.Poke a fair bit with crMK but watch out cause lots of blanka’s stuff beats that.If i have room behind him i’ll combo a fierce crusher on to the crMK, you should be safe afterwards, whether it hits or is blocked, but don’t crusher yourself into the corner. Also use a headstomp occasionally, but never ever go for a skull diver/mixup after it, you’ll get 50,000 volts every time.Standing LP beats his fast roll cleanly every time and that’s the only move he has to close space REALLY quickly, so i like to get far away, (like full screen distance) mash stLP, and wait till they get pissed off that they can’t surprise attack me, and watch for a jump forward to close distance, and then fierce crusher them in mid air during their jump forward. If you block a horizontal ball, you should fierce crusher on reaction, if you’re fast you’ll knock him out of the air every time.
This match always seems to turn into “whoever can chip and poke the crap out of the other guy the most gets the win”.I rarely stay close enough or mixup enough to land any big combos, cause blanka’s normals, specials, and bite are lethal.
Still don’t get where people say Hawk isn’t as bad as Chun or Blanka. If Hawk get’s you into a corner, and you have no Super or you’re not even close to building it, you lost. There’s absolutely no escape. At least with those guys, you can Slide/Scissor Kick/PC your way out of the corner. Even if Bison is playing keep away, all you have to really do is keep pushing him back, wait for him to SK/PC, do a psychic DP, game over for Bison.
As a T.Hawk and a Bison player, I can honestly say T.Hawk is Bison’s worst match-up.
^^ yes that scenario above have lost me many games. the best you can do is DR, time it right and hope hawk misses the dp, most importantly build super. i find running from hawk not as easy, his dive moves far. this is a hard match and all i know to do is run, poke, and combo when you KNOW you have it. i would agree with the above, in that blanka, chun, and hawk are all tough matches. blanka and chun really upset me sometimes, at least hawk takes superb timing to shut him down.
Believe me dude, I’ve had some Bison players get FURIOUS at me because of that. A lot of Bison players are very big sore losers (no offense to those here!).
(thanks for the advice Mackdaddi)
Got to agree with Jiggly that Hawk is Bison’s worst match-up for SO many reasons.
Its ridiculous how Hawk can trap Bison so well if you do manage to sneak out of it, he can too easily snag Bison with his dp
The issue I have in this fight is that there’s little plan of attack for Bison. Its mostly just about shenanigans like connecting with j.mp, hoping to land a crossup or hoping that THawk just plain messes up - and of course the good players never do. The best Bison can do safely is st.lp Hawks dive and even then, there’s not much to follow up with it. I don’t dare run up and try to play poking games… eat one DP “Hoo-uh” and it could be the end.
Sorry Guys, I just don’t get it, Either i’ve been playing some shit T-Hawk players, or i have a miracle corner escape/spacing game that no-one else seems to use??Standing LP into crusher is my number one tactic in HDR for a corner escape with bison vs hawk.To quote myself:
I’m talking IMMEDIATELY, like standing LP him out of the air, and as soon as it hits do a fierce crusher right under him before he even hits the ground.Don’t let him land first.Unless you’re slow with the crusher you’ll be out of his range by the time he lands to do a reversal dragon punch thing and will travel away at a nice safe distance to the other side and plenty of space.Like loads of other characters, hawk’s gameplan is to get bison trapped, and jump, tick, command throw him to death.ANYTHING is safer than blocking in this situation.Spamming the LP for a hit or a trade is likely to get you out, worst case scenario you’ll take some damage but you’ll live. Just standing there and blocking will get you as dead as fuckin’ fried chicken…
Also, watch out for being pushed farther and farther back by hawk, as someone said.Knock a hole in that shit straight away.If i see this happening i’ll let hawk close a little, usually to a bit outside his jumping range, around mid-screen just before he can start his jump in BS, and then use a headstomp and keep pushing forward to switch sides after it connects or is blocked. If he jump+hawk dives me from that range instead, i use the standing LP anti air>Fierce crusher trick, and same result, i’m back into lots of room on the other side again.Don’t let him push you into the corner, see it coming and get back into all the space he’s worked so hard to put behind him, and make him work back the other way instead.
Stomp+crossup is a big part of my controlling space game with bison, and it’s great for this matchup.Same applies for honda, zang, all the big grapplers, or…well fuck it, anyone really.A cornered Bison is not a happy Bison…
Haha, yeah. It’s true, we are a pretty pissed off bunch when we’re dominated:rofl:…I hate to lose, but it’s part of learning i suppose.I ate enough tick throw loops over the years to make me learn to avoid that shit though…
St lp and straightup jmp are excellent aa’s.
Maybe not but it is dic’s undisputed worst matchup.
Not really considering st lp cleanly stuff all 3 rolls as well as all jumpins, cr mk stuffs electricity, and pc beats out all 3 rolls too. Playing defensively against most characters including blanka leaves you with less options to win.
You haven’t played a good honda. Not surprising because 99.9% of hondas on xbl are shit.
That doesn’t work, sirln speciifcally stated dr won’t work against hawk n geif splashes, fierce pc is unreliable and st lp is your best option to get hawk off you in the corner.
I’m not trying to insult anyone but those who posted in response to my question are way off in a few of their matchups. Here’s my breakdown:
3.5-6.5 honda: it’s ironic dic has a counter to everything he can do but he’s still a straightup counter this is easily his worst matchup assuming honda turtles
4-6 chun, guile. and dj: to put it simply their basic gameplan is very effective against dic.
5-5 boxer, sagat, blanka, sim: boxer and blanka are dead even, closeup sagat has the advantage far away you have the advantage, and sim is very tricky but you can take advantage of his limbs as well as he can take advantage of your corner weakness.
5.5-4.5 cammy, hawk:mk scissors and st hk own her but safe drills are a bitch so be cautiously aggressive, hawk is pretty easy for the most part unless you’re cornered.
6-4 shotos, fei: st hk stuffs fb’s, hs and dr stuff dp on recovery, and dic’s overall harass strat is pretty effective on shoto design watch out for fake fb and kneebash though. Fei is basically a less scary version of hawk just do’t get cornered.
7-3 claw, geif: jmp rapes claws air game, cr mk and st hk deal with his ground game just don’t be stupid and keep claw honest when he goes off the wall. If you’re on the offensive like you should be you take claws walking speed away which makes your throw range slightly better. Geif is really your bitch here if you don’t get cocky lariat loses to slide, jumpins lose to st hk, and if you get splashed just pc to the otherside basically play like your runaway storm in mvc2 and geif will half to come to you just don’t play aggressive.
You’re fighting some really shitty Hawks if they still jump forward at you while you’re down in the corner. The only time where you continue to jump at someone whose down in the corner is if you need to safe jump them (and with Bison you don’t ever need to do this). Hawk can WALK up to you after EVERY Typhoon after you’ve been downed and Tick, Typhoon. I prefer doing :mk: as a meaty since the hit frames last forever and it puts Hawk in perfect range for his Typhoon and out of your throw range, cutting off even another small possibillity for escape. If you DR before or after the tick, all Hawk needs to do is a fierce Rising Hawk, and you’re back down on the pavement.
I’m telling you Bison players, Bison can run circles around bad T.Hawk’s. :arazz:
A good T.Hawk though will know his shenanigans. They WILL do a psychic DP, and things will get very brutal for Bison after that.
this this this this this this
good runaway bison against hawk is like 5-5 at worst for hawk, probably 6-4 hawk
Devil’s Reverse can escape all tick and Typhoon attempts. Dictator can end the motion in uf and that takes him BEHIND Hawk and all the way across the screen. That’s the reason some Hawks mix up their tick, Typhoon attempts with j.Fierce or j.Jab or meaty Tomahawk, to keep Dictator from escaping.
If I see a tick, Typhoon attempt, without a jumpin, I block the tick, and reversal Devil’s Reverse out of there. Try ending Devil’s Reverse in uf, instead of u or ub.
Yep, agree with this.Any Dictator worth his salt should know the mechanics of the DR inside out, and which directions do what.Timing to do this is tough, but it IS do-able
It’s not his UNDISPUTED worst matchup.I’m disputing it, as well as plenty of other posters here. You’re right, there are a lot of scrubby hondas on XBL, but I’ve played plenty of good hondas too, the best of which was probably a set with Chagatai, and while it was tough no question, honda is beatable. That set was round 50/50, at worst 60/40 for honda. If you know how and when to use your specials and normals, mixup and get lots of throw damage, and keep away from ticks and out of the corner, bison has an awesome zoning game, and can easily keep pace with Fatso.
zooolander has misundersood my post. i was replying to jigglynorris about bison trapped in the corner. DR is ur best bet to avoid the tick throw in the corner, and ull likely miss cuz hawk will dp you as you take off, either way u build super for his reversal. you can st. lp all you want but in the corner your going to be thrown. Blitzfu has it right. and honda is not as hard anymore, no more infinite ochio, crusher beats headbutt. matter of fact games against honda are reall just waiting for the head butt, then j.rh, st. lk, cr. mk, crusher. dizzy reapeat, or just j.rh, cr, mk, crsher. when he wises up you take to the air or work pokes. but still id say his worst matches are blanka, chun, and hawk. chuns a whore and blankas a dirty beast lol jk… tough matches, tough matches…
