M.Bison Beginners Thread

So the next major thing I need to work on is dealing with jump-ins, especially cross-ups, as Bison.

I’m getting hit a lot of ambiguously spaced cross-up attacks. Eventually I’ll start to get the hang of blocking these, but once I’m conditioned for that I’ll get hit by empty cross-up grab. What’s the best counter for the cross-up grab?

I know I should be working on retreating j.LK, though that backs me into a corner eventually.

Its really a vulnerable space for him. What you should try doing aside from j lk is if you read the jump in earlier, then neutral j MP.

j. lk is very consistent though. and the fact of the matter is if you read the jump late, then your best option is block. the best option if you expect the empty crossup is your fastest normal. so like cr LP or st LP or st lk. grab is 5 frames and they still have to land so you should be able to tech or beat ANY of their options.

Thanks! I’ll give that a shot.

apart from s.MK, s.MP, axe and s.HK what do you use as poke? i feel like c.MK is useless…

I have only two uses for c.MK

  1. Check their ankles as they move up
  2. cancel into LK Knee Press for chip and it spaces you out of a lotta punish range even though it’s -4

I haven’t tested, but would crMK xx LPinferno work as a good buffer in footsies? Is it punishable on block?

Test it. I am working most of the day so no access.

Point blank with Chun Li, blocked s.LP, s.LP, c.MK xx LK Knee Press. Her c.LP should not touch you at this range. If you try it with Inferno it may or may not get punished cuz Bison moves forward on the Infernos

mk Inferno buffer in footsies is HP punishable by Chun. Not a good look.

How long does Bison get for v-trigger hit confirm, and more generally is it the same for all characters?

How do I open up a patient opponent who sits in crouch block and can react to dash-in grab or DR overhead attempts?

throw. Forward throw to corner sets them up for meaty on quick rise and 4 frame safe jump on delayed wake up
nothing wrong wtih throwing a dude all day

These are pretty much the pokes I always use. I find that s.MK is a pretty darn good AA normal when you can preempt their jump in. I especially like using s.MP to stuff their offense and make them respect Bison’s footsies, so that he can put the pressure on.

Unplug his stick

Actually if he’s going that passive, rack up some chip and get him to approach you… use the clock

And mix up dash grab with dash cr lp… i think

Juicebox did this to me last week and just to see what I would do. Truth be told, Bison really has very minimal options in neutral against an opponent who, simply - blocks.

If you know your opponent is actively down backing - you walk forward, as painful as it might be with Bison - you walk. Eventually they’ll freak out and press a button. Everyone has that “freak out” space - you just have to find it and learn their timing.

Alternatively, you can get within DF HP range and hit them with that twice into a throw. If you know they’re just down backing you then you know they’re respecting your buttons. Play like a total asshole, hit them twice with psycho axe to close the gap and then give them a throw or frame trap. Frame traps don’t have to be frame tight - they just have to trap the button your opponent wants to use - a lot of that is intuition and experience at work.

Don’t be afraid to try and throw someone twice, three times, four times in a row. If you get the feeling that they’re just going to block - run with that read. Don’t second guess yourself. If you’re feeling yourself then go with it. Be a bully. It feels great.

In all honesty - I prefer an opponent who is just blocking as opposed to walking back and fourth playing footsies. That’s why Bison has a slide - to check your opponent for trying to walk back and fourth to whiff punish you. When you see them trying to play footsies - they’re probably looking to whiff punish your stHP, crMP, stMK, or dfHP - those are a lot of buttons and chances are they’re forgetting your slide. Check them. Just because it’s unsafe doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it. If you think they’re focus is elsewhere - remind them that slide is a threat. Secure a knockdown and run your shit.

The Bison trials by Tyrant.

Still having a hard time cancelling from EX Inferno to EX Stomp. This is for the final bit of trial #9, the only one I haven’t done yet. What do I press when?

Practice ex inferno xx ex stomp timing in VT then once you get that down start the combo. For me as soon as ex inferno comes out I down up kk right away.

Thanks. Down up kk, down up kk. I think I get stunned looking at the pretty lights of the EX inferno go up.

Uploading a couple of vids for some constructive criticism. Both are wins, but wins I somewhat feel I didn’t deserve. First is against a Ryu. First game I got beaten badly, second game I won convincingly, third game I feel like he just cracked. I’m only uploading the third because even though I won I feel like I didn’t do well.

Second vid is against a Necalli that had about 1000 LP on me. I feel like I robbed him.

One thing I have noticed is that I go airborne way too much, either jumping or headstomp or DR. You’ll clearly see me in the Necalli match where I do headstomp three times in a row and he punishes me a little yet I still went airborne often.

It took me a bit but think of it as one fluid motion. D, db, b+pp, ub, u+kk
