Unfortunately this is the reality of the children in the FGC. Same way some morons in here are crying for Rose nerfs or claiming that he had an easy path to the top. Fact of the matter is that Luffy played very near perfectly had very smart play and spacing and only illustrated that despite character shortcomings and match ups it’s more about playing your OPPONENT and not your opponents character. He got in peoples head, made them second guess what they were doing and made them not punish as hard or rush down as hard despite Rose being virtually free on wake up or having really weak defensive options to stop pressure.
Luffy earned this one the hard way, from losers bracket.
People pretending like Rose buffs didn’t help are stupid, but she doesn’t need them removed. I don’t think Rose wins the Sagat matchup. Bonchan made a lot of mistakes, and I actually think he was on tilt the entire series. He makes a severe tactical error in round 1 of game 1 when he had the game in hand and he never recovered. Luffy had him mentally steaming.
People should rewatch the series with the sound off. Luffy played masterfully, though. Bonchan wins round 1 of game three(and eventually he wins game 3 of first set), and surprise, it’s because he lets an overaggressive Luffy come to him. Those were the first rounds he even won! I think it’s true that the characters we pick are an extension of ourselves, so I would imagine a relentless character like Sagat is probably a little bit of a reflection of how Bonchan’s personality is, and to be forced to play Rose’s waiting game was too much to ask. Bonchan just wanted to get in that ass with Tiger shots and smothering offense. Doesn’t work on Rose. I feel like Bonchan’s pride got in the way of him winning.
I only read the first page of this thread so maybe this was addressed but…
Instead of focusing on what tools Rose available to her, why not focus on Luffy’s fundamentals? He took a, IMO, mediocre character and played to HIS best. Just going on the grand final alone, he knew how far he had to be to make the best use of Soul Reflect and meter building, the best distances to use Soul Spiral and NOT get punished, how to confirm his hits, and how to properly pressure. Bonchan was outplayed by someone who not only had deep knowledge of his character but someone who knows how to use fundamentals and the system to his advantage.
When I watched this match I was just shocked at how good his core gameplay was. No fancy combos, no dancing for the crowd, nothing. He knew how to maximize damage and manage his meter for optimum efficiency. That won him EVO and, quite frankly, that’s what will win every game. It’s why Justin won Marvel this year, too. Even if you have Sentinel against Servbot, if that Servbot player knows the game and his character in and out he’s coming out on top.
I thought people would be more excited that an actual footsie-based character won Evo. No vortex, no divekicks, no reversal ultra or FADC ultra for a gorillion damage. With all the whining about vortex characters and stuff I figured a traditional street fighter style character would be welcomed.
I was pulling for ricky to win but honestly props to Luffy, incredible top 8 performance. Also lol at anyone who says Rose is broken and needs to be fixed.
The only thing God tier about rose is the size of her breasts, something Luffy obviously understood going into evo. Definitely feel she’s pretty well balanced.
Bonchan was clueless in this match but so whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Until Ultra I would have called it even or Sagats favor slightly. Now it probably favors Rose slightly.
But it was Bons lack of knowledge and Sagats lack of ways to stop some of Roses options that made her look FAR better then she really is. She is not OP.
I like how he played quick and simple. Got the damage went for a mix up and if it didn’t work back off a little. I don’t see many people backing of they just keep going and going. I think that entire match should be added to footsies 101 as a current video.
Hmm, I was thinking that they’d roll-out an Arcade edition and then maybe an update on the arcade version. Primarily because the Ultra logo is silver, which was how Super was before having AE. Then came AE 2012.
Definitely stoked for Luffy. Mad props, much respect. He’s been a stalwart Rose player and I feel that he earned the championship. I’m curious as to how many female characters have won EVO since the IV series began…
I’ve messed with Rose a bit, in the IV series and Alpha (remember those 30-Hit Alpha 1 combos?) and I definitely like her design, but she’s not an easy-to-master character. These bandwagon Roses (mostly online ones) won’t last as they won’t have the patience to put in the work needed to excel with her. Instead of nerfs they need to buff the lower tier characters as they’ve said they want to make every character viable (or as close as they can get). By nerfing characters that have won
EVO or other majors, they are punishing players. Now if a character was to consistently win several majors and EVO, I would understand the need to nerf.
Also, you shouldn’t judge a player’s victory by which competitors they didn’t face in a tournament. That doesn’t negate their championship, nor skill level. We’ve seen that regardless of match-ups, it’s the players’ skill that ultimately decides matches. We all know match-ups are in constant flux. NO match-up is concrete at this point.
In a forum section for that character, you’re never ever going to get objective responses to a critique of that character, no matter how well you back it up or how many examples you cite. I watched the match and couldn’t believe how difficult it was for Bonchan to accomplish anything substantive or reliable, even with world class skill. Playing Bison, I’m particularly aware of those situations in which someone is losing to the character moreso than the player. At the end of the day, realize you’ve made a good argument and don’t expect or worry about confirmation from the biased peanut gallery: they’re too invested in making themselves out to be epic heroes for playing a particular character. Hell, in a Cammy forum even Cammy players will tell you how hard it is to scrape up a win.
You dont know what you’re talking about that’s the problem. Bonchan was clueless and kept throwing fireballs when he could have done it differently. Sagat/rose match up is 4.5/5.5 at best. Look at this
