this
Jesus fucking christ, I’m starting to find all sorts of full movies on youtube now. There’s even an HD upload of VERSUS
lol THAT movie.
ridiculous.
I never liked Versus. Dunno why. Just one of those things.
I love Miike’s late 90’s to early 00’s films like Audition, Fudoh: The New Generation, Ichi The Killer, Visitor Q, Dead or Alive, and Gozu. I didn’t like 13 Assassins but I can see why someone who’s never seen a modern ‘extreme’ Japanese flick could like it.
I always laugh when some random asserts that Japan is conservative and against violence when they’re the country that gave us the Guinea Pig franchise.
Visitor Q is such a lulzfest
My friends think something is wrong with me when I recommend them to watch it
For a while Aftermath was on Netflix. That blew my fucking mind. Unfortunately it’s since been removed.
Louie did you get banned again?

Lady Terminator is one of those exploitation films I think everyone needs to see at least once. That, and the Story of Ricky.
I watched Hesher recently, I ended up liking it a lot
Rubber is so fucking lulzy
Nice references Louie !
You’re dabbing in a lot of different styles.
I’d recommend Duel to the Death (1983) which is my favourite kung fu movie with great mystical scenes, great music and ninjas that don’t look ridiculous.
Also for whoever liked Mindgame (from studio 4C°) I’d recommend their adaptation of Tekkonkinkreet, great manga and great anime, plus Plaid did the music. But you may need to have read the manga before viewing it maybe.
Oh well, if it’s obscure kung fu flicks you’re after.

that one looks funny, never seen it.
But I’m serious, “Duel to the death” is great, I’ve seen tons of kung fu movies, many cheesy ones as well, but this one is over the top.
It has many things, aside good action, never seen in other hong kong productions.
To start with, it has NINJAS ! and not ridiculous ones. Lots of magic and mystical scenes.
Plus tits.

My top of the worse may be “Crippled Masters” which is really weird,

“Taoism Drunkard” that’s fun and crazy and

“Ninja Champion” that comes off as the goofiest, badly acted and choreographed ninja movie ever (and the bad french dubbing enhances the cheesiness of it for the lucky ones that understand the language) the plot of the evil guy is just so complicated that it takes him a good 5 minutes to explain every point of it to the good ninja in the last epic scene.

Now if you like horror, I really liked Aja’s “Hills have eyes” remake, good tension, scary, a bit cheesy on the side, reminded me of the good old days of good horror flicks.
You doods postings these are gonna make me go run out to buy bootleg Chinese movies, bootlegged by the RZA and Wu-Tang, for double bootleg DVD cover WU-TANG PRESENTS WUSHU THEATRE
for $2 down at the supermarket, scant DVD choices.
A friend of mine had a few of these on VHS back in the 90’s. Lots of good movies.
As far as I know they didn’t bootleg “duel to the death”, but have indeed sampled a good track from that one. First song of their second album if my memory is correct.
Good chop sockey selections. Can’t go wrong with Godfrey Ho. As for the Hills Have Eyes remake, I gotta’ disagree. It was an okay picture but has nothing on the original in my book. I think the original Hills Have Eyes may be Craven’s best film, after that is the very underrated People Under the Stairs.
It’s all style, little substance. It’s a love or hate movie, but one can at least like it if they don’t have any deep expectations.
One amazing thing about Miike is how many movies he would crank out. The dude would go through like 10 movies per YEAR back then. They may not all be great, but you have to admire his dedication to his craft.
Ichi the Killer was my gateway film to Miike. I gradually saw more and more of his stuff, but my personal favorite out of all of them is Visitor Q. I mean the whole “reconstructing a family” theme has been done a lot, but I like how Miike handled it(some of the symbolism was a bit blatant, though). Very touching.
To be fair, Guinea Pig at this point is such an obscure and niche series that only the most hardcore maniacs would even know of it in Japan. You’ll find way more foreigners who are familiar with it. But really, there are only two films out of the whole thing that are remotely interesting: the infamous “Flower of Flesh and Blood” and the comedy classic “He Never Dies”. They’re all shitty horror films, but awesome as showcases of horror special effects.
Also, the whole “Japan being conservative and against violence” thing is half-right. They’re kind of taking the direct opposite route from the US: American stuff is getting more violent/lewd, Japan is placing stricter media laws; a lot of anime nowadays heavily censor any nudity or gore on TV, even in late night shows.
Regarding Ichi the Killer itself, it was great, but I also regret reading the manga it was based on because it totally ruined the movie for me. The movie had to either cut out or alter key plot points, which is understandable because it’s a movie, but Miike fucked up the ending and turned it into a slew of garbage symbolism.
Ichi and Kakihara do properly fight in the manga, and it’s the climax of the series. During the fight though, when Ichi lands a kick that not only shreds all of Kakihara’s clothes off but also severs his penis(…I think, it’s been a while since I read it), he finally starts to feel pain and realizes Ichi IS going to kill him. This is when Kakihara loses his taste in masochism, and becomes so scared of Ichi that he runs away like a bitch. It’s a hilarious scene. lol
My gateway into Miike was appropriately enough Audition. Great experience! His more recent films are okay but lack that weird/comedic/surreal bite that his best films possess.
The point I was trying to make with Guinea Pig is that Japan has definitely delivered gory politically incorrect films and media. Not so much games I admit (Rapelay is okay though…), but definitely represented in films. Hell, they’re the country that gave the world Battle Royale and it was released with the equivalent to a PG 13 in Japan. If you get a chance, take a look at some of the Violent Pink films out there. Not only are they porn pictures with a story but they’re taken as a legit artistic medium. Plus they’re rampantly misogynistic and politically incorrect.
As a side note I’ve always been amused when reading criticism of the facism and the romantic rape scene in Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs. Clearly these critics have never even heard of Pink Films, if they were to watch one or two of the more popular ones their brains may explode.
And Pink Films aren’t some niche genre they’re pretty well known and got wide distribution. Of those I’d recommend:
Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs. Exploitation masterpiece, definitely an influence on Tarantino.
Star of David Beauty Hunting (AKA Star of David Hunting for Beautiful Girls). Japanese American Psycho.
Lady Snowblood. Female samurai picture.
Entrails of a Beautiful Woman.
School of the Holy Beast. Japanese Nunsploitation.
if you thought miike’s output was a lot, and i’m not saying it wasn’t, back in the day pink films were filmed in under 2 weeks, and i think yopin films were made in maybe a week because they had to hire foreign actresses. miike has definitely lost his touch, like all veterans. i enjoyed crows zero+2 and the yakuza vg movie a lot though… but i guess those are pretty old now too. the 13 assassins remake is just horrible.
