sigh Sometimes, it hurts to suck so bad at this game. Since a month or so ago, I haven’t been able to play any SF4 for about a year since my Xbox stopped reading discs. Now that I’m back, I didn’t get any worst at all. But I’m not getting any better as the days go on either. I can blame it on lack of character match up knowledge (which is partly true, but far from the main reason). But I just can’t seem to shake tough pressure and get out. Don’t make the right decisions, don’t punish/react quick enough. And just plain not being good enough to win. People can just jump right next to me all the time to neck kick me, and I never punish/react to it. I just end up blocking all the time and it turns into a laughable loop.
I need to practice. There really is no other option or roads to getting better.
What I’ve noticed is that a lot of players think that you need to do something at all times. Blocking is way better than people think. It gives you time to think and read their patterns. I’d seriously try to win without using ex kara (defensively), ex oroshi (defensively), and backdash and just try to block. Once most players push themselves off of you they typically take unnecessary risks to try to maintain that pressure, that’s where you get them. Try it
Well to be fair, Mak’s back dash doesn’t go back quite as far as it first appears, notice how she moves forward a bit as she resets into her neutral stance.
Not saying “I tried, it doesn’t work” on your advice. Just to get that out the way, hahah. But I do block a lot more than anything. And it’s been helping me a lot quite honestly. Being able to block certain things. But sometimes I play against players and characters that seem to make that pressure never ending, and I can’t get out and eventually take a hit that leads into a combo, to knock down, to right back into it.
I mean, I know it’s obviously my fault that I let the barrage continue for so long without punishing em. I just don’t react quick enough when the time shows itself/when they take those unnecessary risks like you say, and/or I just don’t know what to do.
Next time I get bombarded like that, I’ll try n remember to save it and show it. So you guys can tell me where I maybe should have thrown a jab at, or back dashed to get some space and stop em. I know the spots are there. I’m just not doing it, and they notice that and keep the loop going.
I know what you mean. When I played Chris Hu like a year ago in NYC I got shit on omega hard. I didn’t know where the holes were. Granted he was playing Oni and I had pretty much never played a competent Oni before but still. What I do is I see what they’re using to maintain pressure. I find out what the actual frame data is and I go from there. There’s always a way out. Sometimes its not the best option, but there’s a way.
I really wish absolute guard was taken out, the reversal window was reduced, and input leniency wasn’t so lenient.
Note: I’m not sure if you all know this, but theres an iphone app called SSF4AE Bits. It’s pretty amazing for stuff like that and all of the frame data is editable so you can edit it yourself and you don’t have to wait for them to update it. Just a heads up if you didn’t know that.
Would just like to take this opportunity to say fuck Ranked Match. I went 24-9 today (that’s a 72 percent win rate) and I’m somehow down 100 BP with Mak.
Fuck you Capcom and your retarded ass point system.
Typical Makoto syndrome. Since you lose to players that don’t have a functioning brain, they are typically lower rated and you lose way more for your losses and win much less for your wins.
I might be switching over to hugo… strong possibility. I like to choose characters that I don’t understand. Everytime I do I learn a ton about fighting games in general.
I mean, yeah and sorta no at the same time? To be honest, from what I’ve seen out of japanese Hugo’s in third strike, it was a lot of shitty footsies (meaning other characters do it better) and parry punishes with throw (which we dont have parry anymore). They had some hit confirms into clothesline which i think was an untechable knockdown. It really doesn’t seem like much to me but I’m not a third strike guru. His walkspeed is makoto-ish and his normals are slow as balls but with a ton of priority from the footage I’ve seen. Do you have any info on him outside of what I’ve listed here? I’m honestly at a loss for what his gameplan is supposed to be exactly outside of defensive punishment. I wish I could get my hands on his frame data
I plan on using Hugo (or trying him out because he’ll be different from xT hugo) and from what I’ve seen is that his focus attack needs to really be abused due to it having such a huge range that most characters won’t deal well with. I don’t really feel like in this he’s going to be like say Hawk or Gief where they want to grab you and put you in the grapple vortex but rather into maybe trying to get you to do something and reacting maybe?
As for Mak I was a bit dissapointed in her changes at first, but seeing more footage I’m actually starting to like it more. I was never one to go for a ton of axe kicks because I felt it didn’t fit how I liked to play her. Even though I’ve been on and off again with SF Ultra should give me something to latch onto.
Not really, just the bits and pieces I’ve gleaned from match footage. He seems to have some mobility options with his specials/normals and his dash is pretty good for a grappler. Actually kind of like Makoto in that sense. Also getting 1/3rd life for free off one wall throw is pretty sweet, not to mention its also a free Ultra if you have it stocked. Ironically his actual SPD seems kinda lame by comparison.
Resigned myself to losing my way back down to 10k BP and trying to re-earn the 15k. After posting a 239-112 record and being down to almost 13k points now I have decided this shit is impossible for me at my current level. Though Ultra will likely come out and make it all irrelevant anyway lol.
I even randomed out games against Jazdero and even PR Rog at one point online, so fuck it I still feel good about myself.
