Looking for a good Dreamcast Stick

So lately i’ve decided i wanted to go back an play a few older fighters on Dreamcast on a stick. I’ve looked into several options. First being possibly buying the Agetec Arcade stick for the Dreamcast, which apperently is widely favored as the best DC fightstick. Or my other option, is to buy Sanwa stick/buttons, and take an older DC controller and make a fightstick for the DC.

Only issue with option A, is price. The Agetec lowest i’ve found it withen the US is 80bucks used.
Only issue with option B, is slagcoin says that theres lag with using an original DC pcb board.

Now i’m just wondering roughly how much lag, if its only a few milliseconds to a second that’s fine, but if its like, 2+ seconds i’m going to have to pass.

Another option, which might also provide lag, and im not enterially sure how much lag it would result in also, is to take maybe a PS1 controller, and make a stick for it and just get a converter for the DC.

If there’s any other options, or cheaper Agetec’s/other good DC sticks, i would be very appreciative.

I’ve been looking into the same thing. Thanks for the thread, it should be informative.

The lag described is for the Dreacast pad analog triggers. This does not affect the agetec PCB.
If you have a dremel, then modding an Agetec is the best route.
If you don’t care about VMU support, you can use an MC Cthulhu board in a custom case.

If you have a 360 TE, the next option is to order a TE kitty kit from Toodles, and modify your stick with a RJ-45 jack and Dreamcast cord.

Best Dreamcast Joysticks are the rare HSS - 130 or HSS - 136 made for dreamcast. They are near perfect copies of a Astro city panel the way the new Hori Hrap is a copy of veiwlix panels. Most HSS - 130 and HSS - 136 are made for the Sega Saturn.

It is easy enough to get a total control adapter 3 to convert a Sega Saturn controller to a Dreamcast controller.

The Innovation stick is bottom of the barrel but is easy enough to mod. The stock board isn’t common ground. I have managed to fit 24mm buttons into the beast and fit a Cthulhu inside.

The stock joystick is difficult to replace, but the stock joystick works as a replacement for older Neo Geo arcade sticks, which takes a rare and discontinued Seimitsu stick. The Innovation stick’s joystick is not Seimitsu but a clone.

Yes the Stock Sega Dreamcast Pad’s PCB said to lag. The Toodles’ MC Cthulhu can do Dreamcast playability but it lacks a VMU slot.
Agetec is $80 because its hard to find, discontinued and high demand
Agetec is also a bit difficult to modd since there physical alterations to the case needed to be made.

ps1/ps2 sticks with a dreamcast converter or ascii sticks

besides the 2 dark said

Other than the Hrap 1 or 2, the Namco stick and maybe a few rare others, there isn’t many PS1/PS2 sticks worth getting.
Most of those will cost more than what the OP is searching for now.

HangingSquid, what is your budget for this?

Lukas, are you sure you don’t mean HSS-0136 and not 0133?

@OP
If you don’t care for the VMU, just get any run of the mill stick with Sanwa parts and then mod in an MC Cthulhu.

true if price is a issue but he can get any ps1 duelshock or ps2 duelshock modded stick , besides the hrap 1/2, tekken 5, namco just will be a investment but worth it

Yes.

PS2 pads isn’t the best route to go anymore, a multi console PCB (like a Cthulhu)is a better choice

they are still lagless though basically all about choice but u can’t go wrong with the mc board though

The Innovation PS2/Saturn converters have a VMU slot. They do command a higher price when people realize their value. They occasionally go for cheap on eBay.

there are also the ems converter there are lagless ps2 to dreamcast converters and have a vmu slot on it as well

Not meaning to thread hijack, but I do have one of those Innovation PS2 converters. If I hook my Tekken 5 PS2 stick to my DC it works flawless. However, I also have a Byrdo stick with a PS1 PCB, and in games like SFA3, the Roundhouse button refuses to work. However, plugging in the Byrdo stick to my PS2 all buttons work fine as well.

Anyone have an idea as to why this would happen?

What PCB is inside? Crack it open and snap a picture. It may be an original digital PCB which have sketchy compatibility with converters.

Sweet, then either of those plus a Namco would do work. I know it’s not a very Tech Talk like answer. I’d take
the Namco over the Agetec for other system compatibility.

byrdo sticks are usually 6 buttons so maybe the ps1 stick of urs the roundhouse button is mapped differently on that stick ? or do both sticks have the same button layout? since dreamcast is only 6 buttons u can’t change it. also if ita a ps1 digital pcb that can be the problem the best one is ps1 duelshock pcb

they are different button layouts:

Byrdo stick (on PS2) is:
[] /\ R1
X O R2
Tekken stick is the default Hori Layout for it (haven’t modded it)
So even though I can remap buttons in a game, there is no way to get Alpha to work with the Byrdo stick?

TBH, i’d really like to keep this under 150 for 2 dreamcast sticks. 75 for one.
If there’s not an option that cheap, i’m probably just going to go and buy 2 Agetecs.

I didn’t mention this, but i’m strictly speaking a whole new stick. Dual modding any of my other previous sticks isn’t really an option.

Now do those dreamcast sticks have to have Sanwa parts or just dreamcast stick?

Ok so i decided that i’mma go this route. It seems the cheapest and seems from what i’ve seen has minimum lag.
Thanks for the idea.

that is pure bullshitt! DC AGETEC DO NOT LAG, infact they are the gold standard for DC joysticks!
now the lag that they should be talkin about is triggers that can cause they lag, but definitely not the agetec pcb!

lemme tell you they are worth the $80 or more they are selling for! I’ve stocked up on mines and have a good 10 for inventory for myself!
just never know when your gonna need to play mvc2!
