London Thread 2012

OMGOMGOMG fighters in London! My friends hate playing fighting games with me so I get no practice baring the computer and that is no fun.
I play… well everything… my favorites being SF IV, SCIV (haven’t see V yet), UMvC3, and Bloody Roar (guilty pleasure).

Lol added

Do you play Super Turbo???

Also, Martin when I get back from Japan, Imma kick your ass in every fighting games ever made. We will have the ol` gauntlet. Then I will beat you in every other game made!

Chris I challenge you to Final Fight.

Btw, the rankings will now be based on the last 3 sets. 10 is too much, especially since someone can overtake someone in less than that if they really want to. So now if you play a best of 30 set, you can totally change the results.

You are welcome to show up Thursday (if you can). Let me know if you would like address and such.
Also, Bloody Roar is reasonable compared to some of the more obscure (and psychologically traumatic on varying levels) fighting games people like so no worries. We all have our odd niche favs…

so is this system strictly based for rankings? or…

he sounds 13…lmao…age check?

Bloody Roar is amazing.

Castlevania Judgment…

:frowning:

It can be used for that, but I would hope that it would be more for getting feedback/discussion amongst us to improve. Hopefully without subjective saltiness or such.

From what I remember of the titles they did not really leave a strong impression on me. Mind you, I did not have anyone to play against so that does take away any real objectivity about that.

I feel that way about MK9, KoFXIII, DS/VS and Bushido Blade (ok I am stretching about this one) around here at this point. Also, I am sure Chris feels this way about everything he wants to play.

I like MK9 and KOF13 but the problem is a lack of a community for them in the area (and in general, although they seem to be doing alright in some places). As for the other games, they are great but just gotta accept that old games die / are dead.

No one wants to play a game that no one plays #self-fulfilling prophecy

It’s also not really possible to have enough time to play and be good at every game you want to either. I would say that if all fighting games had large active communities I would be playing TvC, Castlevania, UMvC3, MvC2, VS, Killer Instinct, MK9, SSBM, BBCS, and maybe KOF13 but then I remember that I quit playing Starcraft (which has a HUGE community) just because I didn’t have the time to be good at it, and that’s only one game.

Also I need to change my gamertag. The novelty of this one expired when I stopped playing DotA, which was like 5 years ago. Open to suggestions…

Turbo 2 Tone - Not since '97 and even then I was playing KI more so I’m not all that good at Super Turbo.
Meljin - Great, on Thrusdays have the whole afternoon free starting at 3 and seeing as I have no idea where you all meet an address would be great (hopefully in the White Oaks/Westmount area for travel considerations)
Cambodian - I was 13 when Super Street Fighter came out in the arcades. I’m just excitable

This I will agree with. I understand the split is mostly between UMvC and IV, so I go with it. :expressionless:

Because of how most fighting games from Capcom (and perhaps in general) tend to be within reasonable similarity to each other, the ability to improve in one tends to lend itself to improvement in others. That is from an execution/mechanics point of view. While the “feel” say between UMvC3 vs AE is different in many ways, when you can minimize the gap of the physical execution leveling, you can work on the nuances specific to one. At least in my eyes…

At this point I am hosting on Thursdays and I am in the north east end of London. I will PM you my address and such. Typically 6pm is start time, but I might be able to manage a bit earlier this week…

I would agree with that if fighting games didn’t have such big casts and convoluted systems now. I think you need too much knowledge to be really good at one game to try being really good at more than one. After 3 years of SF4 I can still get bullied into the corner by moves that are minus on block because I’m afraid to retaliate not knowing where the actual gaps in the strings are. I know the really common ones, but there’s so many odd characters; if I fight a Guy or Juri or Dee Jay or even Vega who’s been around since the beginning I’m going to be holding a lot of down-back (let’s not even talk about my tourney loss to Hakan because I knew literally nothing about his super). My fault for sure, but I’ve prioritized other things over learning those (school in the past, other games, Marvel now). Marvel is my top priority now outside of the necessities and I go really far out of my way to learn all of the weird tech, setups, and strings of every character but there’s still a ton I don’t know. I don’t want to imagine how busy I would be if I tried to learn all of the nuances of another game.

Gootecks of the North is my vote.

From this point forward when you rage pitch your stick, you must:

You don’t need to dedicate a lot of time to a game to get “good”. Learning a lot about a game doesn’t really help you win tourneys…

The technical aspect of the game involves:

  1. picking a top tier
  2. learning their cheap shit
  3. practicing until your execution is near 100%

The human aspect involves:

  1. having good reactions
  2. having good analytical skills
  3. being able to adapt (tied to #2)
  4. having lots of experience vs diff types of styles/characters
  5. having amazing mind games
  6. having balls of steel (super underrated attribute)

The matchups should be easy if you’re playing the game right, cause top tiers have basic strategies that own pretty much any character.

The rest is pretty much based on your genetics and your comp. You can be smart, have good reactions, but be severely limited by your local scene. In fact, most players will never get past a certain level cause of this. It’s just life…either you dedicate your life to playing a game, or you accept mediocrity or local “fame”.

PS. New SRK is fucking horrible. It was way better 10 years ago…that’s sad.

BRING BACK REP GROOVE!!!

Hosting after 6 (because I am sure I am going to need time to get home) this evening.

Yo get some challenges going tonight…have as many people as possible play each other so I can start filling in the charts. No need for the video analysis just yet, cause it will eat up too much time, but tape the sets if you guys can…cause then we can talk about them on here.

I’ll be there with a TV and recording setup. What kind of numbers should we expect tonight (so Joe knows whether to bring his monitor or not)? Also Joe think you can bring your xbox anyway? (gives me one less thing to carry, although if you’re bringing your monitor too then I’ll just bring my xbox as well so we have a full extra setup).
