Hey, um is there actually a scene in london that im missing here? Im just finding out that this thread exsisted :P. Anyways if we actually do have a scene somwhere in this god awful city somone post the details o;
Hey rice Welcome, Im sure the guys will fill you in on the details.
The thing about the older games was there was less game changing abuses that the system would allow. Why do you think from WW to Hyper Fighting and even Super, Tomo Ohira won like 100 tourneys, because the game allowed the best players to win all the time with their skill since there were no ultras or xfactors to even things out. ST brought in supers and the bullshit has gone upwards ever since. After ST supers we got CCs and Vism, CVS2 Roll Cancelling and Sagat, 3S you had a fairly unbalanced set of characters, Marvel infinities, but the best players won in those game mostly, because to do all this shit takes a disgusting amount of skill and practice. The reason todays games can be BS, is that yes they are dumbed down a fuck load, but be, things like xfactor or ultra are actually game changes that are easy to do and were intended in the game. Roll cancelling in CVS2 was not meant to be there. Unblockable vism and jump cancel infinities in A3 were not suppose to be there. CPS1 links, marvel infinities etc. But today
s game allows anyone to flook off wins even at the highest level. But yes the best players will be the most consistent placers since the game isn`t actually rolling a dice yet or flipping a two headed coin. The problem is that it is headed in that direction. Again look at tournament placing from Tomo days to Watson, to Valle Choi/ JWong. You could argue that today has more players in an actual competitive environment travelling, but the games do breach levels of using game mechanics to wins assuring that it isn’t always the best player who wins.
Ever since the Daigo parry vid, SF has gone in the direction of comebacks to make it more entertaining to the crowds which Mihai is so right that it was Capcom`s intention to make money, not provide a great fighter despite what they think about the game. Why do we see more BS Ultras, Xfactors and easy combos systems, Pandora shit and all the game mechanics intended to fabricate comebacks. All in order to create “HYPE”, new age scrub word, Street Fighter lingo is so lame. Fighting games will soon resolve into cinematic videos in which to choose the best path for your fighter and the cinema tics will play out for you.
To reply to your last comment. In Mvc2 unbockables and infinites were incredibly hard to do. The amount of pratice required was immense. As to cvs2 never played so i cant comment on it :P. As the way fighting games are turning out. They are turning into a more casual sport instead of a skill based game. Take marvel 2 and 3 for example. Marvel 2 with all the fly cancels and no comeback factor was horribly unfair to the casual player. Now we have Mvc3 and we have crap like xfactor, 1 hit kills ect. They are also becoming more of a spectator sport as you said, mvc2 was such a bad spectator sport because of its fast paise assist spamming rediclulous number of charecters and so on. In my opinion fighting games will turn out to be such casual sports that they will become not fun any more and require 0 skill / no practice. Feel free to comment :3
Chris I dunno what’s goin on with you in Japan, but your posts are becoming more powerful…I’m dead serious.
Also, fuck comeback mechanics. I hate them so much…I can tolerate supers, but they should build so slowly that you have access to them once a game, and that’s only if you actually land hits. Getting meter for being hit seems totally ridiculous once you apply the idea to other games. Imagine a first person shooter where every time you got shot, your gun got powered up. Or you got faster. Yeah, I understand that it adds some excitement to the game, perhaps even some “strategic depth” because you have to take into account your opponent’s meter, but the idea of being rewarded for getting outplayed is stupid as hell and should not exist in any competitive game.
edit: SRK edit blows…
k your right on both and Persona being made by Atlus slipped my mind. I’ve seen Persona with Chris and we both agreed it was dumb, plus the environment we saw it in was possibly another reason why we frowned on it. And I just mean for a strat game Disgaea was preety long. and something like .HACk was its random dungeons and dumb AI made that game super long too
The only typically organized sessions are currently Thursdays at my place. PM me if you would like address/contact information. I usually post here as to what time is good to show up. Gamewise, general focus is usually UMvC3 or SFIV, but SCV, KoFXIII and just about any other school fighter can be put in/played.
I personally only played Persona 1 and 2 for the PS1. The PS2 releases I never tried, and I am honestly not sure why. I can understand many would be put off by the content of the first two for sure (yes, I am negotiating with a demon in a toilet to give me a card so I can summon demons…), but from the grinding curve and time consumed they are definitely in the more “old school” RPG catagory. Compared to say Skyrim or more recent RPG’s, the “challenge” curve is more consistent through out older RPGs (both in difficulty and how long it stays difficult). But because the majority of the potential gaming market does not want to spend 100’s of hours for content/improvement of skill within a game, devs have tailor games to fit into that demographic. After all, they are in this to make money first and foremost no matter what. In the age of low attention spans, need for immediate validation and such, “society” has decided this what they want from gaming. Good or bad, it is the way it stands. Mind you, a part of me does not miss almost falling asleep grinding away in older RPG…
Video games!
Street Fighter!
I played a little more SCV and I think I’m gonna use Tira or Nightmare now. Tira would be perfect if not for the fact that her persona change is random (wtf) and I don’t really want to deal with having to react to the randomness of my own moves changing my entire moveset. I really liked Nightmare back in 2 though anyway and I like how simple and effective he seems in this game. Leixia seems better suited to someone with more experience in 3D fighters.
Anyway I’m basically still just fumbling through movelists at this point so this could all change. I feel completely lost in this game still even in training mode
I don’t know why I’m posting this here, but it’s pretty quiet in here anyway.
You woke us up here on our sleepy weekends. How dare you. Also, I did not know that Tira had some persona random move change. Probably because I was too busy trying to deal with whatever Kilik clone replacement name is (Xian, Goku, WTF?) nasty side step/horrible to defend against crap. I would say Fuck Alvin, but I think he already knows this.
Did you guys here about that jago/mike ross crap o.o
Starting March 8 (the Thursday following SFXT’s release), do you guys wanna start having weekly tourneys for SFXT, AE, and UMVC3 (and SC5 if there is enough interest)? Min 8 ppl requirement, $5 entry, best 2/3 double elim, 3/5 winners/losers/GF. Pot is 70/20/10.
8 man requirement is there so that these don’t become glorified casuals, and it helps the brackets. But I dunno if we can get 8 ppl in all the games…
Marvel: Joe, Alvin, Ryan, Drew, Ben, me…who else?
AE: me, corry, monney, joe, alvin, ryan, drew, ben, etc. I don’t think getting 8 ppl for AE would be a huge challenge.
SFXT: again, 8 ppl for a brand new game won’t be that hard.
Would anyone else I didn’t mention be interested in coming out? ie. ppl like Jeff who I know would be interested but don’t have time to come out.
btw, I could drive ppl close to me, but on Thursdays, I have class from 7-9, so yeah…any other day would be good for me.
Ill go in Marvel and SfxTekken im pretty ass at AE
Monthly probably works best. Losing money every week in AE will suck, but maybe it’s worth it to aim for 3rd/4th to get $5 back or whatever so I play better. Getting 8 people is the problem =/, but it’d be sick.
BTW played Rice on XBL, he’s 15 and he’s got the right idea with Wolv/Task/Wesker to be super cheap. Another marvel player!
Monthlies is fine if that’s what you guys want…or maybe bi-weekly cause 1 month is too long to wait to get revenge…
for payout, we can do 40/30/20/10 and so 4th would get $4 back.
I agree with Joe about getting the consistent numbers of people is the big issue, but maybe SFxT might change that? Time will tell.
I would suggest then that outside of Thursday, another day would be more suited for pay to play tourny/money match sessions. Perhaps weekends are better for people overall for this? Personally, I am flexible with my schedule outside of working days…
Tbh I don’t even see the point of using Thursdays for casuals if this is when ppl have been used to coming out for years now…we should take advantage…we’ve had this discussion about which day to play in the past, and no1 really decided on any other day cept Thursday…
If you guys wanna do this Friday, I’d totally be down with that. I finish work at 3, and so we could meet like at around 4-6? Finish by 7-9 (see below).
As for numbers, I see us getting 8 ppl in all 3 games, but the following would have to happen:
Marvel: Joe, Alvin, Ryan, Drew, Ben, me, Rice, Monney, Corry
AE: me, Corry, Monney, Joe, Alvin, Ryan, Drew, Ben, Jeff, Tony
SFXT: Joe, Alvin, Ryan, Drew, Ben, me, Rice, Corry, Monney, Tony, Jeff
For Marvel, I heard Monney play a bit? I know Corry doesn’t like the game, but it would help us get 8 ppl on a consistent basis if he tried to learn the game. After all, we got some good players that can help him learn and he’s a fast learner.
For AE, we got the numbers, I had totally forgotten about Tony. Sry Tony lol
For SFXT, again, it’s a culmination of players, so I think we’ll def have 8.
If all of us sacrifice a bit and try and make these tourneys happen, then we can have a solid 3 game, 8 man competition going every two weeks and create some incentive for players that currently don’t have any (like Corry and Monney and I’m not gonna lie, myself as well).
Also, if we have a solid base, then when new players like Rice join, then they won’t have to look forward to just casuals with a few ppl every week, which let’s be honest, is a real let down to competitive ppl (Joe, I’m sure you’ve felt this).
Finally, I think we should play at Huron again. I have free parking there and I can give Corry/Alvin/whoever else needs a ride a ride there and back. Also, it’s far bigger and better suited to a larger group. And yes, I realize that this proposal goes against my schedule if we do decide to keep meeting Thursday. I’m just throwing some ideas out…depends on what ppl say…
As for time, assuming an 8 man bracket and 3 setups, that’s like what 14 matches? 5-10 minutes per match on average, that’s around 100 minutes per game. With setting up, random shit, waiting for players to finish their matches in another game, let’s say 3 hours total. So in 3 hours, we could be in and out as long as shit is run well.
We should bring back the Battle of the Burger name, too.
-Definitely interested in tourneys
-Not really interested in SFxT at all (could change when I try it)
-Doesn’t matter what day really. Right now I use Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday for the gym with Sunday to do whatever and Thursday for casuals. I can move my schedule around but for now I’m sticking to 4 days/week at the gym.
Congrats to Troy winning a SCV tourney that I didn’t even know was happening.
yeah i dont rly have any interest in sfxt right now either.
ryan lean nightmare please. he’s one of my worst matchups and i need to work on that. i met a pretty wicked tira on xbl recently too. lemme know if you want me to connect you with him. i find that stealing other ppls shenanigans and gimmicks is gr8 in sc5. she is strange though. like gen but you cant control when you switch stances except for in between rounds.
If no1 wants to play sfxt, then so be it.
Just FYI, if ne1 wants to join a tourney but they don’t have the 5 bucks, I will spot them. So don’t let that be a reason for not joining.
And if ne1 is interested in challenging Toronto or surrounding areas to an AE/Marvel 3on3 or 5on5 or w/e, let me know. We could do drive there and make it $20 or more a head or something to see how we stack up. We could do this when they have a get together or a tourney. I’ve had this idea for a while and think it’s pretty good to grade our progress.
