London Thread 2012

Have you never clicked on someone’s profile on new SRK? You see all that stuff right away.

I like some of new SRK, but really I just want the media sidebar back; it was nice when all the new videos were organized right there.

Trophy points are the lamest thing ever, Mihai man you remember the discussion we had about this and new age gaming.

You remember that discussion you had about those darn kids on your lawn?

Easy mode everywheeeere

Truth is there have always been piss-easy games, just are there are still fucking hard games. It’s just the popularity and mainstream attention has shifted towards the easier games because more people play video games now and most people are fucking stupid.

The first thing I do when I pick up a new single-player game is set it to the hardest difficulty setting available, and as long as I did my research on the game beforehand I’m usually not that disappointed. DMC4 wasn’t hard but it was challenging enough, RE5 was the same story, the newest Castlevania (although mostly a pretty bad game) was really damn hard, and Dark Souls does everything it can to be the most antagonizing video game you’ve ever played. To say nothing of indie games like Super Meat Boy and the entre IWBT* series.

But seriously think back to some of the old games everyone loved as a kid. Every Super Mario Bros., Kirby, or Sonic game? Easy. Every Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest? Easy. Super Metroid? I can probably 100% that game blindfolded. That’s not to say there weren’t really great tough games too though. For every easy game there was a Contra or R-Type or Battletoads, but the thing is it’s still like that. I really think it’s less the games themselves that have changed and more your perception of them (as well as the mainstream attention on them that I mentioned earlier). With everyone talking about the new Call of Duty or Zelda or whatever it’s easy to forget that Dark Souls made you its bitch and slept with your mother last night.

This rant turned out longer than expected. I should get back to doing things that I make money for.

lol games like Dark Souls/IWBT aren’t “hard” its just made to kill you/make you mad and it’s your job just to simply avoid that risk. O you want to go right? You die, next time go left.
Turning on hard mode in most games today doesn’t even make that much difference, it usually just doubles/triples the baddies that come at you like Arkham City. And even then its cuz you don’t know how to play that makes it slightly more challenging. Learn how to counter/use your items and it makes no difference.

You compare a FF game today to a FF game pre-this console era there is a huge difference.
FF13 you run a straight path/control one character/and there’s even an auto-battle button/and battle tips that tell you how to win
Not only this, but when you die you have the option to “continue” from the last load screen and even then there’s a** freaking save spot every 5 mins** lol

FFX you have wide open areas with multiple directions and options/choose the action of every character/think about each fight
When you see a save spot (which could be 3/4 into a cave or none at all in some) you feel over joyed since you haven’t saved in maybe half hour and when you die…load up your last save.

Even if I think of the old games their still waaay harder than what there is today.
Mario you get 3 lives, and gotta find 1Ups that are hidden or collect 100 coins. O and no saving
New Mario, lives are almost handed to you 5x a level and mushrooms are in every other block. PLUS you have a health gauge I can literally hold run through a stage non-stop to the star and grab 4lives while im at it. If I die, i basically just gotta slow down or move SLIGHTLY to the side for 1 part then continue.

Zelda
You get 3 hearts, gotta find pieces or beat bosses for more. Lose hearts from falling into pits/lava. And hearts are randomly hidden in grass/pots. Plus you have a whole world to explore and you really don’t have exact direction you know where to go most times.
New Zelda, get 6 hearts and radar to tell you where there’s pieces. Lose nothing if you fall and provide you with radar and items to increase the hearts found in grass. And there’s always some partner/reminder telling you where your supposed to go and what you need to do in exact detail

Kirby, can get 15 lives before you die in his 2 latest games. That’s all that needs to be said.

The list can go on and on but I really don’t want another txt based back and forth.

I remember…

Gaming has gotten a LOT easier, Ryan. It’s not a matter of perception…it’s a matter of fact. Companies make their games ez mode to appeal to as many as people as possible. More people interested = more $$$$. It’s ALL about the money. Having said this, they also need to make hardcore games like SF “hardcore” enough so that their meat & potato audience (ie. SRK) doesn’t lose total interest and call it quits and plays only the old stuff instead (which is bad for Capcom…ppl who play old games are worthless from an economic standpoint cause they’re not buying new stuff). You can see this type of protest from the Counter Strike community who for the longest time (prolly still the case…) hated Source, and refused to play it, preferring instead to play the better 1.6. Unfortunately, SRK is now filled with whiny scrubs, so when SF4 came along, the masses gave it the thumbs up, and the community was pretty much forced to play it, even tho the game was balls. I mean, you can be like Josh and stick to your principles as much as you can, but where has that gotten him? Finally playing a handful of people on an ST cab that some dude miraculously attained? I applaud him for being a man beast, but reality is that a lot of ppl just want some comp and unfortunately, the scrubby new gen is where it’s at.

So what’s so scrubby about SF4? Well, I’ve gone through this before, but I’ll give some examples of why SF4 and MVC3 are hella scrubby.

SF4:
-FADC to save your ass from being stupid and making a bad read
-focus attack to avoid “annoying” chip from pesky fireballs that you know, have been at the heart of SF strategy for a decade+ (edit: want to clarify that what I mean by avoiding chip is that focus dash back/forward allows you to position yourself well and avoid the chip instead of having to walk in and block, or neutral jump like in other SF games, which results in u losing life or compromising your position)
-focus attack to punish “annoying” pokes…can’t play footsies or your character has inferior normals? Throw out a long ass focus and dash back. If you’re lucky, the game will reward you with a crumple cause you can randomly press two buttons at once! (edit: this isn’t really a big deal, but focus baiting pokes is stupid imo and hurts a big part of SF, which is the ground game)
-dash back to escape mixups, cause blocking is too hard. I find it unfair that Capcom didn’t make forward dashes full invincible too, but alas, life’s a bitch.
-EX moves with armor. I think in SF5, all moves should have this.
-EX moves with fireball invincibility, cause fireballs are cheap
-EX moves with 2 minutes of startup invincibility, cause it’s not fair to have your random specials stuffed
-ez b&b’s, cause it was really stupid that you needed good reactions to short, short, super or overhead, link super to do serious damage. C. short, c. jab, c. jab, c. strong, sweep is much better.
-Ultra, cause getting hit is unfair. I’m surprised Capcom took so long to think of this. After all, getting beat deserves a reward.

There’s more, but I’m getting tired. Marvel3 also has tremendous levels of ez mode bullshit, but the game is far more punishing and so creates higher levels of frustration and hate, which is good in the long run, cause it weeds out the scrubs, and makes ppl who are competitive want to play the game more (like me).

-x-factor, nuff said.
-ez mode combos, easy enough for even Corky to land most b&b’s after 30 minutes.
-everyone has an airdash/teleport…wtf, which leads to:
-ez mode mixups. Toss out an assist and teleport? ummm ok, anyone who has played MVC2 knows how lame this is…
-ez mode hit confirms. Magneto can do c. L, c. M, C. H, c. S into air combo? Lol? In MVC2 you either did c. short + Assist, c. short to hit confirm, or you did c. short, c. fierce and got punished by a good player. MVC3 has the most ridiculous hit confirms I have ever seen. They make SF4’s look like 3S Ken c. forward confirm into Shippu…
-pretty much every team has a way to kill a character at any moment, be it long ass combo into DHC, x-factor, whatever. This is a LAUGHABLE concept to old school players. It eliminates the need to work hard consistently to win. When all you need is one chance to fuck some1 over, then the game becomes random as hell cause whoever gets the first lucky hit tends to be in a overly dominating position. However, the game does have the LVL3 X-Factor Jesus factor, so you can’t count someone out even when they’re getting severely outplayed.
-combos off throws…ridiculous. Again, this idea of pretty much every1 being able to combo off ground/jump/sj throws/air throws is laughable.
-ridiculous throwing…it’s like every1 has SF4 Guile’s backbreaker. This makes ppl mash air throw in hopes of getting lucky and starting a combo.
-pushblocking…LOL ridiculously stupid mechanic that is similar to SF4’s invincible back dash. Compare MVC2’s pushblock to MVC3’s and you’ll see why it’s so lame.
-ridiculous hit boxes…swords/divekicks/pipes anyone? Promotes “mashing” of normals cause you know they’re so good, you can just toss em out.

Anyway, as I said, at least Marvel has always had that stupid factor…it’s what makes the game good and so hype as the kids say. But this ez mode bullshit does not belong in SF. Unfortunately, SFXT is about to take it to the next level.

Prepare yourselves…

Mihai basically covered the fighting area to my argument as well lol

Way too much to discuss in text now. I agree with a lot, I disagree with a lot. I’ll discuss next time you come out Mihai.

…and Drew did you seriously use Final Fantasy TEN as an example of an old Final Fantasy? Am I really that old?

TBH anyone who likes MVC3 or SF4 can disagree with everything I said, hell I could post counter arguments shutting down what I just said, it would just require more thought because the arguments I made tend to be the main things ppl bitch about, even at a high level. I am almost always aware of the binary opposite of what I say on SRK or IRL. It’s the way my mind works…so even if I criticize something, I am fully aware of the other side of the issue, and could play devil’s advocate if I wished. It’s just that what I said above, I experience pretty much every time I play vs someone good, so these things end up constituting my beliefs…but my beliefs do not limit my perspective. Essentially, it comes down to what you like…if you like something enough, you can justify it all day long, or conveniently turn a blind eye to its flaws.

For example:

-oh you may think backdashing in SF4 is scrubby, but that’s because you don’t use option selects

or

-oh X-factor can be baited or countered etc. so it’s not as bad as you make it out to be

But what I look for in these arguments is their basis in reality. Are the things I said present in high level play? Is X-factor cheap even on the grand stage of Evolution? Is SRK FADC Ultra a life saver even for Daigo? I would say yes, and so the theoretical counter arguments, while logical, don’t interest me because they are not “real” in the truest sense of the word.

I just went with the first FF that came to my head. And even then its still harder than most RPGs this era. lol

apparently Tokido has a Youtube account now?

man, if SF4 lost the focus attack, the invincible backdash, and the easy reversals and huge input buffer it would be so much better. This has nothing to do with the vid I posted…

Chris, this is for you lol

We playing today?

About the new school games: It sucks that the best player doesn’t win 2/3 as reliably as in 3s/ST, but top players still win most of the time. You’re right that marvel’s always had that “deal with it” attitude, cause it IS possible to block High, Low, High on magneto, just really fucking hard and not something you really practice in training room, but practice in game.

6:00 sound good for everyone tonight?

Anytime after 6:30 works for me.

Maybe I should loan you my copy of Persona 2 (PS1) if you want old school hard…and long. Very…very long.

Agreed, and tbh I’ve never thought that the better player doesn’t win in the newer games. In fact, I think the better player wins more convincingly in a game like MVC3 than he does in ST (I find MVC3 brutal if you don’t know how to play well yet). While I do find the new games much scrubbier, that doesn’t mean that scrubs can win or come close to winning. I’m just talking about the bullshit I see at a high level of play that pisses me off…

eeeew Persona, don’t even wanna go into that series lol. Try a Atlus RPG, ive got over 365 hours on one and i still have barely scratched the service. Can go to lvl 9999 and im maybe lvl 700 lol

You do realize that the Persona series was brought to North America by Atlus? Also, since when is Disgaea more an RPG then at turn based strat game?
