Whoops. I guess I got so excited what with being able to play the game that I completely forgot. Something we’re definitely gonna have to put up in the wiki or the moves thread.
Don’t suppose you saw Chris G playing big two tonight, did you?
He abused that Flower Power technique quite a bit. It’s all about finding situations where you can get it started up. It’s a risk, but if it pays off you’re almost guaranteed to get damage unless they’re willing to blow EX to get out.
Am I too late for the El Fuerte discussion?
Alright, looks like Xiaoyu has a sort of built in option select for normal wakeup and forward roll in her overhead move cyanide ( :f:+:mk:). This is meant to keep Xiaoyu in the opponent’s face. I would think this can get blown up by invincible reversals, so try to make the opponent scared to wakeup dp first, a.k.a. block and punish.
Here are a couple setups:
:f:+:mk:, cr.:mk: xx cr.:hk:, jump (neutral or forward), land, whiff cr.:lp:, f.:mk:
cr.:hp: (or cr.:mk:) xx :d: + :p::p::p: xx :p:, :mk: xx cr.:hk:, jump (neutral or forward), land, whiff cr.:lp:, f.:mk:
Timed just right, if the opponent rolls forward, you get far neutral :mk: which you can combo into st. or cr.:lp:. If they normal wakeup, you get :f:+:mk: which you can combo into, cr.:mk: or cr.:hp:. Both far.:mk: and :f:+:mk: are positive on block (sorry don’t have frame data) so you can maintain pressure if they block the attack. Ideally you want to combo/juggle them into cr.:hk: to repeat. So combo’s would either be far.:mk:, st.:lp:, cr.:mk: xx :d: +:p::p::p: xx :p:, :mk: xx cr.:hk: or :f:+:mk:, cr.:mk: xx cr.:hk:.
This doesn’t work if you cr.:hk: them on the ground, they need to be hit in the air with it.
A couple notes:
:d: + :p::p::p: xx :p: seems pretty safe.
The st.:lp: to cr.:mk: feels like a 1 frame link, so plink this. Double tap everything else.
If you land :hk: in the corner. Always jump straight up. Unless you smell a backward roll, you can jump backwards.
Jumping forward causes the opponents direction of rolling (if they choose to do so) to switch sides, so use this option if you want them to roll a certain direction.
Her best pokes to get in IMO are st:mp:, and far.:mk:. I’d say keep fishing with st.:mp: xx :d: + :p::p::p: xx :p:. Once in, establish pressure with st.:lp: strings and mix in :f:+:mk: and cr.:mk:.
I’ll see if I can post some footage of this.
Is there an easier way to cancel her stances?
Another good link to learn is st.lp > cr.hp xx wave crest - the wave crest isn’t a true block string, so it’s a good frame trap that sets up for a LOT of damage afterwards (st.mp xx phoenix talon, you can switch cancel the phoenix talon for even more damage)
Thanks to that dude posting the frame data I don’t feel as lost with this character anymore
Tag Cancelling qcb+MK from AOP is way too good to for setting up high/lows, getting someone to actually block it is the tricky part though since it’s slow to startup
If you ever get in to a situation where you’re using mistrust in a corner, replace the third mistrust with a jump cancelled storming flower (down, downforward, forward, upforward + LP) - it does more damage.
3 Mistrusts is 224
2 Mistrust, Storming Flower is 232
It’s not much, but every bit helps
If you’re getting confused and mixing up AOP/RD direction inputs you can do :db: PPP for AOP and :db: KKK for RD thanks to lenient inputs.
ChrisG was abusing that standing jab pressure yesterday, looked really annoying to fight against lol.
you can jump out
or
if you press down twice and hold it the second time that cancels her stances too.
I’ve been testing some stuff, and I think I’ve found a very solid mixup setup for Xiao, it’s going to be ridiculously hard to stop Xiao’s pressure once she can get these going. It all basically starts with stand jab pressure. Walk forward stand jab a few times to give yourself time to set up and decide what you’re going to do. Do a stand jab -> crouch fierce link, and then cancel the crouch fierce into a stance and use one of her specials:
Wave Crest will hit if they’re trying to push buttons - it’s not a true blockstring, this is a GREAT (safe) frame trap and you can follow it up with a st.mp or st.mk into phoneix talon.
Double Map Sweep will hit if they’re not blocking low. LK and EX is safe, MK is only unsafe against shotos.
Back Layout isn’t a true blockstring, it’ll hit if they’re not blocking high OR unless they interrupt it. You need to make sure they’re blocking before you try to go into Back Layout mixups. Condition them to block after your crouch fierce by using Wave Crest, once they stop pushing buttons, it’s time to mix up between Back Layout and Double Map Sweep. Make sure you use the MK or HK versions, LK won’t go far enough.
If you’re feeling risky you can even go for a California Roll, but even the LK version gives them plenty of time to react, although it can be tricky to see if she’s going to go to the other side, I’d just go straight into Turn of Fortune -> st.mp -> Phoenix Talon.
Practice this shit in training guys, get that st.jab to cr.fierce link down. When you do the Cr.fierce you can just hold downback and then hit punches for phoenix or kicks for rain dance and then easily access whichever special you want. Xiao has a CRAZY mixup game with this, you can test peoples reactions really easily. If you can read your opponent well this can completely shut them down.
You guys probably noticed this, but Xiaoyu’s backdash is really really good. It’s fast and I think it might be invincible ala SF4. Or at the very least the hitbox becomes so small, that it’s hard to hit her with a jump in. I’ve tried testing this with the meatiest jump ins possible and so far a reversal backdash gets Xiaoyu out of all of them.
If this is true, she’s pretty much safe no matter what. Well, unless the opponent correctly guesses if you roll or not AND backdash or not.
Yeah, I was noticing that yesterday as well. It’s looking like Xiaoyu’s ground game is really good, the only issue is getting around projectile characters since Shooting Star is easily baited.
training mode = me pretty solid
in a real match i have no idea what im doing lol ive never been hti this hard with this problem before in my life
I love Xiaoyu, she is a goddess in this game. Love her moveset.
Probably gonna end up being my main. I thought she would be harder to use, but I think she is quite easy.
stuff I notice about xiaoyu dive kick
it beats alot of reversal on wake up like zangief’s Lariat.cammy cannon spike etc but
it loses to some reversal like ex cannon spike, shoryuken etc
it crosses up sweeping distance n seem safe.
You wanna make a thread on this and her okizeme? I would, but I got the combo thread in my hands.
I think one string people should practice is f.st.MK > AOP > Wave Crest. Not only does this combo, but it’s very safe at only -3 on block and leaving you plenty far from most reversals. You’re even safe from DPs on reversal.
Okay, I officially need help with Xiao.
I really cannot figure her out in the least. I realize she’s rushdown-y but I can’t figure out how to approach other than divekicking my way in. Does that lead into anything? On hit I can only pressure their wake-up afterwards, which is not the best strategy, I’d say.
I’m sorry if this is not the proper place for questions, but I didn’t see a Q & A thread so I figured I’d do it here:
What are her safe pokes, if any? I try poking in with st. MP, but I can’t confirm anything from it? Maybe I should be able to, but I haven’t found what, other than chains.
How should I react to pressure? Once I have people in I usually just try to get her out of dodge, since I can’t deal.
Basically, I guess the big question I’m asking is “How should I play her?” Because, seriously, I’m lost.
I think we’re all still figuring that one out.
For st.MP, you can go into Phoenix Stance into her Wave Crest, Double Map Sweep, or her Phoenix Talon, but you gotta be quick. Also, make sure to use s.MK as that is a hit confirm into s.LP > cr.HP.
EDIT: Am I the only that forgets Mistrust reflects projectiles?
