Let's See if We Can Do Something About Our Boredom~ Q&A Thread

Frame Traps beat crouch teching when performed right. Frame trapping is one of Cody’s biggest strengths.

I can’t open them up to want to press a button, they just back crouch block and tech when I grab. lol Maybe I’m missing something but it’s frustrating. Forgive me lol

But you just said they are mashing crouch tech. If they are mashing crouch tech, you frame trap.

If they are knowing exactly when you are going to throw and then stand teching your throw, your throws are predictable.

Alright, I think I get it. Any idea how to mixup my grabs? I’ve tried f+mp to grab but I either get reversal or the person mashes jab and stops me completely. I know crouching strong beats that but then it feels like I let off all the pressure I had.

Well, f+MP is +1 on block. I do agree that people like to reversal after it, especially charge characters, and mashing jab can be a problem but your jab or cr. LK should beat theirs.

Just some tick throw ideas:

  1. f+MP (+1) > throw
  2. st. HP (+1)
  3. cr. LP > throw
  4. cr. LP > cr. LP > throw
  5. cr. LP > cr. LP > cr. LP > cr. LK > dash up > throw
  6. any normal xx LP Rocks > walk up > throw
  7. st. MP > throw
  8. jf. LP > throw

There are tons of ways to set a throw differently as Cody, and if they know you’re frame traps are legit, they’ll think twice about crouch teching.

Now you can always go for the throw really early after a normal or slightly delay your throw attempt as well, which can cause their tech to be mistimed.

staggering your cr.LPs is also a very effective tool that you should learn. The best Codys are able to do this extremely effectively (Momochi and Sasaki are amazing at it). Do a cr.LP then if it’s blocked stand up and then immediately do another cr.LP. The person will see you stand up and thing you are going to go for a throw.

do a crLP - wait a tiny bit - crLP - throw

ect ect

My cody just sucks so much ass. Sad thing is that I’m trying really hard to be good with him; let alone this game. lol I think I should drop him he’s just way too hard for me. I guess

Some characters don’t mesh with certain people. All things considered, Cody is hard to win with but overall an easy character to play. He may just not be a character that fits how you actually play the game. Try a bunch of characters see if may one of them just sort of clicks with you naturally.

Basically what Eternal said. You have to play the character that fits you best. You may want to play Guile or Sagat, but if you like rushing down and being in the opponents face, and are excellent at reading reversals, back dashes, etc…you’re gonna want to go with a pressure character, not a zoner.

Cody isn’t a particularly hard character to play. Outside of his 1 frame links, his combos are easy enough. He doesn’t have a lot of wacky advanced set ups or lots of character specific knowledge. Cody requires good defense, a lot of fundamentals, and patience.

That said, Cody isn’t easy to win with either. Almost every win with Cody will be earned, not given to you. His footsies and his defense are probably his two biggest flaws.

Hey guys, havent posted in the forms for quite awhile, Ive started playing cody , I dont get how momochi does his low Jab, OS , into med ruffian kick. anytime input those two…whether it hits the opponent or not the ruffian kick always comes out. Is momochi doing an option select? or does he just have godlike reaction? (i know he has good reactions, he does ultra 2 on counter hit with med strong) but anyways. OS HELP PLZ! ill try to find a video in the meantime of what i mean.

check out 2:19. is that an OS? and what are the inputs for that? I don’t get it. any help is appreciated.

Yep! It’s as simple as doing cr.lp then going up to towards MK (2LP, 3, 6MK). You just need to do it fast enough for the Ruffian not to come out if the cr.lp doesn’t hit anything.

Also, you can also cause the MK Ruffian kick to not come out by holding the MK button down. In other words,

D+LP, D, DF, F+MK (hold MK for a sec)

Thanks ADN and Ramma for the suggestions, I didn’t try holding MK method yet, doing it ADN way, is pretty tough to do consistently. and throwing out a MK on accident usually leads to taking a pretty steep punish. ill keep at it in training mode and try the hold method. (though Im usually holding down HP already to keep the zonk ready for other punishes)

Try doing the lp half way through the 236 motion. in theory if you press it at 3 it should just come out as a lp and that way you can finish the 236 and input the ruffian faster.
It just takes practice to get consistently, that’s all.

What are some of your guys’ favorite frame trap strings?
I usually catch people with something like cl.mp cr.hp cr.lp/cr.lk then either cr.mk or f.hk etc.
How about you guys?

Is it necessary for Cody to kara-throw? I noticed Momochi and other top Japanese Cody’s doing it but Sasaki doesn’t. I’ve seen both MK and towards HK used.

Also, I’m getting tired of opponents floating out of AA Ruffian Kick FADC U1. I only use U1 in like 5% of match-ups but if Ruffian kick > U1 actually worked 100% of the time - it might actually be worth using over U2.

f you hit them too high or far they might be out of reach when you dash forward, it’s incredibly annoying as it happen more often than it should. I usually stick doing it from a combo or ex zonk. If i notice them to be too far i’ll go for mk ruffian. Overall U1 ultra is pretty damn bad.

I might start using kara throws after watching this match http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK_KFWbv_zQ

Sasaki will be competing in the next Topanga League B because he won the Qualifer tournament - pretty cool.
