"Lay Hands on'em!" Gen Video Thread

Yup you can block. Guile is still on the ground by the time it recovers.

Pretty sure he showed all the characters these set ups work on. Otherwise there is no point to showing so many characters.

Gonna play gen a little bit this week to mess around with these silly set ups.

Heh messiah I randomly caught a replay of yours in while glancing through the replay channel (vs. tcsfunk (guile). Looking good man!

thanks. still trying to better my game, but thanks for the words of encouragement.

Going to practice those Oga crossup later. I usually get them by accident from time to time. Doing this especially on Viper.

looks for the right thread

Thanks for the link! This is solid gold. That gives c.HK another good use. I almost always do a forward kara throw, so landing the cross-up oga was a tough one.

I’m not too fond of Teiga, since it still gets beaten by too many things. But when people already can’t keep up with Gen, might as well kick them in their behind…WRONG! It was the forehead!

I think this should be added to the Shenanigans Bible.

Well since Teiga can be super gimmicky. Here is a gimmick I started using. Obviously this isn’t going to work on everyone, but if you have been going for resets etc, it could cause someone to think you are going to do it again and try and counter with something. So enjoy.

Hey, those cross-ups are really good.
I’m willing to bet they will be effective when used in a match.

Honestly, I think Gen is turning out to be a 50/50 chance character.
He has a lot of one-frame cross-ups.
The thing about those is that if your opponent doesn’t know whether you will actually get those cross-ups, you have more a chance to get those Ogas in.

Btw, I say congrats to myself for pulling off the Shitenketsu xx Oga cross-up technique!
So far, nobody has been able to block! =D Straight up 563dmg or something, and combine it with Super for maximum damage!

I’m starting to mess around with U2 Gen.
When Gen has super and U2, he has the most options at any given moment =]
but still, for solid damage, you might want to stick to U1.

Uploaded some new matches.

check them out and let me know.

this is what ive been saying bout him. i think you have to stay mobile and look to confuse your opponent. then when you need to, you still have great normals to fall back on. your opponent cant really think about rushing you down if they always are worried about how to block you.

look at the gen vids we’ve been seeing from successful players. lots of tricks. redwolf, onifuz, the dude from gods garden, and this crossup oga vid guy all are extremely mobile, and very tricky, and arent afraid to take some risks

also; oga, (m)super, (m)ultra is like 678 dmg

I only watched the Blanka one because I wanted to see how other Gen players took the Blanka match-up, but I guess this guy’s approach was kinda mediocre.
I could see he wanted to play the footsies game, but honestly, there were a few times you could have punished Blanka, and you didn’t take them, like after a blocked horizontal blanka ball. You could have punished with Sweep, or even mkxxhands.
Good punish of blanka ball with ultra, just know that if it’s an upball, you can punish them. You dropped a lot of combos, and I could tell you were afraid to throw a reversal Geriko (you did the light version when you knew he was going to jump in. you could punish that a lot harder). You have good perception, so trust it more often.

That game felt like two little kids playing lol…

To me, it feels like the key to playing Gen is combining a very solid footsies/poking game where you zone and control space with a risky mixup/rushdown kind of thing. If you just play it safe, you might be too predictable and lose out on damage - if you play too risky, Gens poor health and stun will be too much of a problem.

Anyway, watching the videos and picking up tricks. Is it safe to say most Gens are following up Mantis Super and Ogas with crane roundhouse rather than gekiros now? I’m using it more and more - sometimes following up with overhead - back throw, sometimes low crane short into mantis crouching fierce. That Teiga srk bait is a good trick as well, will have to try that one out!

…it felt like that near the end of the second round. I just wanted to win… lol

I find the timming of the dash mk>hands hard to do, thats why i did’nt punish the blanka balls properly. What sort of distance will the sweep work to punish a blanka ball?.. is it corner specific?!

I use light kick gekiro becoz i can finish it all the time. I also practice using lk gekiro in my fadc combo’s… so it feels natural for me to use lk.

upwards roll can pretty much be punished with everything and from any range. rainbow roll aswell + focused.
also, you can better punish normal blanka balls if you block standing.

Yep just learn to do a few things if you see a slow ball coming. Block low, FADC, LK Gekiro or Tech a Throw. Most really good Blanka players only use LP Ball if they actually use them. And usually it’s only to get into just out of your range. Any great Blanka player I’ve played against only used it just to get to mid screen then used other tactics to get in on me. If you have fast reactions you should be able to see what kind of ball is coming at you. If it’s a LP Ball he rill roll in the air slow.

So it’s been a while since I’ve played so I decided to give Ranked another shot. Faced a pretty solid Fei, he had pretty good footsies. I know I could’ve done better I’m still jumping a little bit, but only because I notice I can. I had a few chances to punish in both videos but ended up dashing back. I feel that I’m not dashing back as much as I used to, but really need to stop when I could have a chance to hit them. All n all I think my footsies are coming around. Not tournament ready, but still better than what I’ve been doing. Still trying to get it right.

Also I really need to practice my online auto cross Gekiro. I can do it no problem offline. I’m going to have to just mash the motion until they get over me then hit the kick. I can do it perfectly without having to buffer it over and over.

How is my Gen? I actually don’t play him anymore (or the game recently). I was using a broken pad in the videos, anyway:

In #1 the dude just rage quitted. I made a video to piss him off some more. :stuck_out_tongue: So there’s not much point in posting it.

Looking for constructive criticism, and tips for when I have time to play again, and if I play Gen again.

First off vs Dhalsim.

If he teleports in front of you or behind you, you can use Mantis s.LP, s.MP or s.HP. In Crane you can use s.LP. c.HK. He is a character that WANTS to keep you out as much as possible. After a throw or knock down, dash in instead of walking in. If you use Oga Ceiling Dive, try to use the angle dive if you think he’s going to block. Also if you apply pressure to put them in the corner, try not to put yourself into the corner. This is bad especially if you play characters like Balrog, or M Bison. You caught Dhalsim with a Crane j.HK, you should’ve followed up with Crane Ultra. You were using sweep pretty good near the end of the match. Near the end of the match you could’ve FADC the Blocked Hands. This would allow you to keep pressure on him and possibly end it without giving him a chance to clutch and come back.

I have to take off to grab a HDD. I’ll finish these when I get back bud. I’m sure someone will beat me to the punch.

yeah dude, the timing is strict on punishing those blanka balls w/ MK-hands.
But to answer your question on the distance needed to punish w/ sweep.
Just know that you can punish an upball w/ sweep by walking forward just a bit, and sweep.
You can even dash forward and do a (mantis)st.mp xx geriko.
There are ways to punish it, i’d even suggest (crane)st.hp if he’s in the corner LOL

My footsies have gotten really good to the point where I can mind-game my way into landing a counterhit (crane)st.hp lol
but yeah, I still need a lot of work. My battlepoints are only around 7000 w/ Gen.
I’m trying to work my way up =]

I have way too many shenanigans with Gen.
Can’t wait until I get a video on here to show you guys.

you are looking so much better. random ultra almost cost you vs that fei tho, so keep those out. also, vs sagat, take advantage of your low hitting normals. a lot of times the sagat was just standing up inside your sweep range. you can AA him pretty easy from mantis, and tiger knee dosent have inv frames, so you dont have much to fear once you get past his FB’s and into that range

Okay I’ll keep that in mind. thanks.
