Is everyone as vulnerable as Laura when pushing buttons? I swear her hurtbox comes out before anything else on her most important normals. So much so the priority system doesn’t seem to matter much.
My new favorite thing is going into training mode, turning on random
counter hit and practicing my confirms off fwrd+hp. no CH? jab. CH? cr.mp. its really satisfying to hit confirm off a counter hit in a match. Another fun thing to practice is setting dummy to jump on wake up and after a blocked attack then normal grab OS hp elbow. Ive finally started catching people who learn to neutral jump and it feels great.
Oh, and I’ve been practicing punishing Nash cr.mk with CA. Love baiting that out when i have the meter.
What do you input for that OS?
Just grab then qcf+hp. Do it slow otherwise the elbow wont come out. Its not really a true option select right since you’re basically doing two seperate inputs one after the other but you still dont have to confirm anything so.
Or maybe it is since whiff cr.mk fireball is considered an OS. This is basically the same concept… Throw connects or is teched - elbow doesnt come out. Throw whiffs - elbow does come out. Someone will correct me either way I’m sure.
Oh, I got you. The throw animation cancels the elbow if it hits.
anyone else notice that doing instant jump back HK will propel laura further than usual? i noticed it training mode, the best use i came up with was setting up combo spacing post-stun but recently i’ve seen Kindevu use it a lot for espaping/getting space. pretty interesting. it literally gives her jump about an extra character’s length of distance.
So I’ve had literally 4 different people complain/ask about Laura fwrd+hp. It’s easily countered with neutral jump but that doesn’t make it bad. One more thing for them to think about. Spaced properly it must be neutral on block. I get counter hits all day after its blocked max range. Its esp good in the corner. Free pressure against chars w/o 3f normals. If it whiffs, stick out cr.mp to catch them trying to late whiff punish.
Apparently, Will2Pac thinks Laura is Top 8 in the game.
I watched some matches of his on YouTube with him using Laura but he seems like he gets bodied or just barely wins the match.
His tournament standings:
http://capcomprotour.com/standings/will2pac/
Maybe he gets bodied but he gets consistently into top 8.
P.S. Funny though to notice that both of the best Laura players at the moment were C. Viper mainers back in SF4 (Krone and Will2Pac). Dem boobies.
He also mains Nash too? Damn everyone and their mother seems to have him ready on the side. Well, I guess Capcom Cup is around the corner so this will be interesting how this tournament is going to turn out.
Amazing how those things will completely change a man. O_O
Is it sad that that’s why I wanted to main her too? lol
I don’t know if it’s sad but I sure do know that I end up maining female “mature” characters with dark hair and interesting assets… (and yes, I’m thinking of playing Juri too, of course.)
I sort of fell out of interest with Street Fighter V, but since the update I’ve been getting back in. I’ve been watching Laura matches to see how she has developed in the meta, specifically Wolfkrone’s Laura since he places decently pretty consistently. Quick question, why does he do so many overheads, and why is it working? It’s pretty punishable, slow, and rarely spaced right by him- yet he does it a lot, and he gets results overall (which may or may not be from the overhead). What am I missing?

Here’s a match as an example, but it isn’t an isolated incident. Hell, maybe it’s only Wolfkrone and not other Laura’s. Just wondering, because more likely than not, there’s probably something I’m not considering or have the wrong mindset about. Thanks for any insight. I personally use it sparsely, but would like to incorporate more v-skill overheads if it’s better than I realized.
I imagine wolfkrone is going ham with it because guile likes to down back a lot and if he stands up to block it he loses his down charge for a flashkick.
With that said, I don’t really like how wolfkrone plays laura
Well, online + 8 frame input lag makes it harder to react to than it might look on paper. And Guile doesn’t really get any noteworthy punishes afterwards because he loses his Flash Kick charge when blocking it.
I use it rather often, too, to be honest. I’m only a fresh-baked Gold player mind but it works more often than it gets blocked and punished in my experience.
As for character choice, I played Viper first in SFIV and Rose later. So yeah, I can see some similarities there…
Doesn’t Imstilldadaddy live in the UK? Given the distance there was bound to be a lot of rollback happening in that match that you’re not going to be seeing on replays.
Nonetheless Laura’s overhead V-skill is still pretty heavily underrated. On paper it’s just a slow overhead but at the right distance and timing it hits people both trying to crouch and jump, and it’s more fluid than other overheads in that she can cancel into it from any normal plus a forward or backwards V-skill dash. And yeah, using it against characters who have to rely on down-charging moves is a pretty basic strategy.
Like Los, I’m guessing this is specific anti-Guile tech… and a bit of online craziness as well. If you watch his tournament matches he almost never uses it.
And I agree it’s stronger than it looks. I’ll add that it’s actually one of the fastest command OH in the game (only Ryu’s, Guile’s and Ken’s are faster), that it’s surprisingly easy to slide into pressure strings and that it also gives you the chance of scoring CCs if they try to react to it too late. I don’t think many other characters have such a powerful tool to shut down both backdashes and backjumps.
Man, sometimes I feel bad playing Laura. I can only imagine she’s gotta be hella frustrating to play against. Pretty much everybody tells me they hate fighting Laura. Sometimes I feel fraudulent skill wise too. I keep up/win against players who are just as good and stronger than me when I play her but when I switch to an alt I lose a lot more. It’s not like I’ve put a drastic amount more time into getting my Laura in shape either. I know the set ups everybody else knows. She’s just really cheap.
It’s not the first time I’ve felt bad for playing a character. I had a plan to main Phoenix in vanilla mvc3 before the game was even out. Wasn’t my fault she was incredibly cheap! My friends wouldn’t play with my so I had to drop her >.>
Oh and also Laura beats Ibuki IMO. Pretty badly, in fact.
Regarding overhead: I certainly will mix up between canceling a block string into v-dash or v-overhead, which I think is the key to using it in pressure. You have to have them looking for other things. It’s really effective in the corner when spaced properly, as well. If I notice they’re not blocking/punishing the overhead then I’ll abuse it. It’s amazing that’s she’s not only right in the opponents face afterwards, but +0. I rarely come across someone who doesn’t just block after being hit by it, making for a perfect opportunity to go for counter hit set up. Plus when it crush counters, it can lead to some nice damage.
I definitely believe this character is top 8. Definitely at the top of the mid tier IMO.
I really enjoy watching Wolfkrone despite his socially awkward antics. I really wish VRyu played this game more though.
When did all mainers start to think their own character is good or even top 8??? This is not how things work…
I don’t think btw Laura is a cheap character, in many MUs she has to work harder than anybody else to earn something… and probably for this very reason we end up getting enough experience to deal with the toughest situations.
On the other hand the experience with this character is probably playing a role higher than you think. I already had a higher ranked guy whose Alex I beat in casual inviting me in a ft5 and picking Ryu just to prove he’s better than me with a character he knows how to use better (and accidentally has a better MU against Laura). The real test would’ve been if I played my Vega against his Alex.
P.S. can you talk more about the Ibuki MU (maybe in the MU thread)? I didn’t have the time to test it properly against a non-free Ibuki.
Melty Will2Pac is currently streaming: https://www.twitch.tv/meltyesportclub
A FANG nearly perfected him and he made a touch of death comeback and took the round. It was a thing a beauty
I’m going to look up the replay online in CFN and rewatch it.
On a side note he’s using the premium costume.
Anyone seen the color options available for that costume or Sean’s basketball Jersey costume?
