Yea we try to get new players out of that mindset because we can play off of that and use it against you.
I was actually hit with command dash, ex grab at the end of a close match. They set it up nicely though, I had been conditioned earlier during footsies to watch for mid screen command dash, normal or mid screen command dash, back dash. At the end of the match they did the command dash, and I guessed they would back dash, so I dashed forward and ate the ex grab lol. It seems like a one in 20 matches gimmick, but I did not find any uses for it yet.
Some times you just gotta shake your head and move on. I once had newer tournament player insisting he could just DP rufus cr. fp on reaction since it was 14 frame startup and he could do it in training mode. There’s some ideas only a giant ass-whooping in game can solve.
Yea I’ve already done so. Even after I posted video proof of a character with similar set up, at disadvantage and punishable, he still wants to deny it. It’s a clear difference on what era you come from and how you approach SF, read a book or actually play.
its not a canned setup but it a setup nonetheless
when so many other things are being established during footsies and the neutral you tend not to react to everything rather to pick and choose the vital things that you need to block
sure if someone was to throw out a certain move with out planting anything else into your head and you punished on reaction it would be plausible because they haven’t brought anything else into the conversation
its why I chuckle when people talk about things being completely unviable after certain exchanges as if they are able to consistently react to it (like command dashing forward after certain setups.)
Yeah you can because the player you are facing is bad and hasnt grinded out neutral to divert your focus
laura got good enough frame data up close, and decent fireball setups to make you weary of pressing buttons and the movement to hawk you down
she lacks a consistent anti air but after building momentum she can put you in guessing situations enough to blow people up
How about you record a video of your setup on SFV, with Laura, and shut this debate once and for all ?
You know why you don’t do that ?
Because it’s not working !
I entered training mode and tested your setup. Already told you like 34 times now.
It will NEVER punish a jab masher and reward you with a CC !
Stop posting BS about different eras or reading a book VS actual play : I’m not the only one in here telling you that setup is, at best, ok for fishing a whiff punish, but it can’t CC a jab masher.
And again : I played fighting games from as far as I can remember (SF2 in arcades, KOF 94-XIII, X-Men Vs SF series, SF3.3, SF zero 3, USF4, GG, BB, SFxT, SCV, all Tekkens etc etc), so your only argument about me being a noob at fighting games seems rather desperate at best …
Sorry for interjecting here but Caliagent never said it would guarantee a CC. He presented it as a means of getting one. You are misunderstanding his example with the CvS2 video. It’s a proof of concept. Evidence that to show a similar setup can be effective and archive the desired result. It being consistent is irrelevant.
For example if they’re mashing jab in anticipation of the forward dash, you can do the back dash, do a sweep and score a CC
Sure you can net some CC by doing backdash > sweep and counter some slow normal, but I already agreed about this being a way to whiff punish shit.
Talking about setting up a CC to counter jab mashers. And it’s not working. You can mash jab, and still block in time the incoming sweep, which is -8, meaning you can eat damage by doing so !
In the end, 1) it doesn’t CC a jab masher 2) you can eat damage … conclusion : very bad setup to punish jab mashing, ok setup to fish for some stretched, slower normal.
And again : not saying it’s useless, it’s just not fit to use when you wanna CC people that mash jab in anticipation for the forward dash. THE END !
I can see the misunderstanding now. You didn’t use the sweep to out prioritize the jab. The game has a 3rd Strike-like priority system. That’s how you need to land most CC.
I do know that light < medium < heavy in this game. Especially useful during frame traps if people mash jab and you frame trap with a medium and happen to hit on the same frame.
Still …
It has nothing to do with this lol
You can jab, block the sweep, even if you delay your jab by a few frames … meaning any masher is free from any CC from that setup.
You will never out-prioritize a normal that you don’t trade with.
It might work with backdash > qcf+LP since you cancel recovery frames from backdash (unlike when you use normals, especially a very long ones, like sweeps)
Edit : just tested it, you eat more counters yourself than you score some for yourself (varying jab timings)
The video you posted you tried to whiff punish the jab with sweep. You didn’t actually try to out-prioritize. If landing a CC is the goal than’s that’s what you need to do. The distance the backdash puts you it should be very possible to get an easy CC.
st.MK just seems like a generally terrible button for that kind of shenanigans. Garbage frame advantage and not special cancellable so you can’t mix shit up too well.
