You might as well try to repel it. If you mis-time it, at worst you get knocked down or reset.
This is a general question, but Iām going to use a specific example. Iāve been mulling over whether or not to make greater use of links with speed mode characters.
I believe the two main benefits of using links in speed mode are:
- You have more mixup options. This includes high/low options, and greater variety in attack timing.
- Your combos do more damage. Sometimes even if the real damage increase is minimal the apparent difference can be significant. Longer combo strings can cause your opponent to begin thinking heās in more trouble than he really is, and may lead to desperate/predictable play.
Although the above benefits make using links in speed mode an attractive proposition there are some drawbacks:
- Since the links complicate combos you are more likely to blow them in the heat of battle. This can lead to decreased damage, and drawback #2.
- Your opponent may have more opportunities to repel.
An example of links creating a combo with greater damage is the following:
Using Kojiroh
:l::snka::snka::l::snka::snka::d::snka::d::snkb: :qcb::snkc: :qcb::snka: (~85 dmg)
rather than
:l::snka::snka::d::snka::d::snkb: :qcb::snkc: :qcb::snka: (~75 dmg)
I believe using links for mixup purposes is pretty much necessary at high levels of play. My question is, to what extent do other LB2 players use links in speed mode solely for the purpose of increased damage?
Iām interested to hear:
- If you donāt use them at all, why not?
- How often to you use them, and whatās your criteria for considering them worthwhile?
- Do you only use them in certain situations? If so what are they? Please do not include ābeing within rangeā.
This question is directed at anyone whoās progressed far enough in the game to understand what Iām talking about. Iām hoping to get some kind of response from players of varying levels of skill. Donāt be shy.
If you can do it consistently then do it. Thatās the way Iāve always seen it. Depends how much extra damage youāre getting though. I donāt usually bother unless Iām linking something from a low.
Yeah, the high/low stuff is pretty much mandatory IMO. I guess the real reason Iām asking this question is because Iām trying to decide if itās worth the extra effort to become consistent with links that Iām working on. Iām just looking for a bunch of different points of view about the issue.
wellllll damage is damage. If you can do it, then you should imo. Especially if it works from the same ranges as just doing the regular combo. If you end up needing to be at certain distances to do it then donāt worry about it. But It always seems to me in last blade you should do as much damage as you can when you get the chance, cause thats what everyone else is doing.
Those kinds of links can be useful for safer hit confirming on the ground.
You can do :l::snka:, :snka:, see if it hits and then link the rest.
That was one thing I was thinking about. Iām pretty sure that, if timed properly, the :snka: hits canāt be repelled. In this sense you have more time to hit confirm and more chances to hit.
Depends on the character imo. Getting the extra links with Washi, Kojiroh, Hibiki, Akari, Zan, Moriya (down C -> back A) have all become second nature. Kagami is kinda 50/50 for me. Being able to link from low-high/high-low (doesnāt apply to everyone) consistently makes them more dangerous.
Other characters like Kaede and say Shigen donāt really need them or have them for that matter. Kaede can link to down C, but itās not to useful imo.
So yeah i would say go for it whenever you can.
What emulator is used? I got the neo final burn alpha but it wonāt run LB2
Mame 32k mostly. I use Kawaks1.56 for recording though. You might need the neo geo bios to get the game to work
I used to use MAME32k but for some reason it wonāt let me play online
I would recommend playing LB2 on 2DF (2dfighter.com) rather than Mame32k. Most of LB2 players I know play on 2DF, or have moved on to other things. Also, because 2DF is P2P youāll be able to have relatively lagless games over a large geographic area without the hassle of manual P2P. Mame on public servers only makes sense for games that arenāt supported by GGPO/2DF, and games with more than 2 people.
iām having a problem with shigens 2xhcb after ab super, after what number of hits do i initiate it
Is LB2 balanced enough to be tournament worthy?
Yes, but itās more than a little broken. You need a banlist for things to stay sane.
Start the motion as soon as you can, just have it done at the 2nd hit.
Yeah, if you try to finish at around the second hit, thatās good.
Does anyone know if there are any high level videos of Yuki players? Iām interested in learning those characters but I canāt find any videos online. Iāve checked both Kyokujiās and Sohās youtube channels and I could only find one video.
I have 3 match vids of a speed Yuki on my other pc. iāll upload them for ya somewhere
Sheās a rare character to see in tournaments. You have to be very mindful of your spacing to win with her.
