i want an air throw, a teleport, and a fireball. and im dead serious. FOR MOTHER RUSSIA!!!
Hmmm…
GH shouldn’t b punishable when we hit with it… please… lol
Zangief doesn’t need to be nerf or improved upon. I’m confuse why there is even a thread on Zangief. He’s the only character in the game you’re force to play his style. 14 pages… on Zangief? Seriously?
Gief needs auto-lag even offline, can’t win with him without turning on utorrent
Ryu, Sagat and Akuma say hi.
I agree with Ultradavid on most things.
Especially having green hand nullify high fireballs better.
MK sped up so safe on hit.
Remove RBG
I would change his super to the stomp super from EX.
I’d even reduce his health overall from 1200 to 1100 and his damage overall by 5% in exchange for:
Faster Focus that can hit crouchers
Faster Dash from 26 to 20-22 Frames
Slightly faster walk speed
Gief’s problem is he slows the game down a lot due to his health and speed. Making him less sturdy but faster would solve that.
Who’s this Abel player that’s magically figured out the Gief matchup? I seriously don’t see how Abel comes close to making it 6-4, it’s just too easy for Gief to get a knockdown, and he can afford to gamble to do it. And once he gets a knockdown, Abel just can’t get away. Gief can afford to just keep trying to jump in, varying his angle/attack and once he succeeds (Abel’s AAs are serviceable but difficult to use, so a screw-up is bound to happen), Abel can’t get Gief out.
The worst thing about the Abel/Gief matchup is that the Gief doesn’t even have to know anything. Abel has to really be good to beat a spasmic Gief. The Akuma match is hard, but at least the Akuma has to be good to make that match tough… random Akuma play isn’t going to cut it. I know this shouldn’t come into play too much when deciding matchup details, but I think it makes the Gief fight just seem so insurmountable.
About how to change Gief, I think Hawk is going to be a “faster Gief”, where his walk speed is a bit better, he has a dive attack, and stuff. Though I agree that Gief kind of slows the game down a bit. I’m just not sure how to really fix it.
Amen. Honda main here. His wake up game on big characters is stupid. But getting knocked down is something I work real hard on (no homo) and succesfully when I play against good geifs.
I also like the green hand/ high tiger shot ideas. It wouldn’t make him god tier, but it would make shoto matches a bit more interesting.
The Abel is Combofiend. He originally played Abel when the game first came out, but he ended up dropping Abel for a long time because he thought Abel had some matchups that were just too terrible, including his matchup against my Gief. But in the last couple months he’s gone back to Abel, and I think it makes a lot of sense for him. He likes playing offense, he likes combos, and he’s good at playing footsies, and that’s basically Abel’s game. Against Gief Combo plays a patient footsie game, which is really only doable if you have your toward+mk dash fierce combos down and are good at footsies in the first place. He doesn’t try to get involved in doing meaties on me much and he knows the guessing games Gief’s jumps force him into and how to deal with them. Again I still think Gief has the advantage in basically all situations so I still think Gief wins, but in each situation he has considerably less of an advantage than I used to think. It’s a win, but not a big one.
I’d be down with making Gief a little faster and even making him do less damage in some situations, but I don’t think he needs to have less health.
I’m gonna have probably my final set of proposed changes up pretty soon. Nothing major imo.
IMO they just need to make it so lariat doesn’t hit crouchers. Also it should only hit once so it can be focused. A lot of characters don’t have any answer to it. I also think they should just get rid of the upper body invincibility crap and just give it complete fireball immunity. It’s so dumb that ultras can just whiff through it for the duration of their animation (see Honda / Fei Long).
Other than that I think he’s fine. Maybe give him that short jumping headbutt attack he had in alpha to help close distance.
facepalm They might aswell give him same stamina as seth. Stop whine you fucking scrub. Lariat is easy to punish, if you cant beat it shouldnt Capcom nerf it. Dont come back to this thread
Sometimes I almost make the mistake of thinking people on here are the same person posting over and over again. I start thinking like,
“Fuck! Shut up about the lariat already! Everyone has an answer to it and the fact that you might not know your character’s answer doesn’t mean it’s not there! If lariat didn’t hit low it would be useless, if it didn’t hit multiple times it would be useless, and the fact that it does both not only doesn’t make it too good, it doesn’t even make it one of Gief’s 5 most important versus-ground moves. If I throw it out randomly I will get owned unless I use it in certain situations that I often need to specifically set up to get myself into in the first place. Please, please, PLEASE fucking SHUT UP about lariat!!”
But then I remember that there are thousands and thousands of people on this site and that most of them don’t know as much about the game. All I can say is, no, lariat’s not broken, and it’s not among any number of the worst things in this game either. Lots of moves in go through lots of other moves, including most ultras. Please find out what your character can do to beat it and then stop worrying. I understand that it’s harder to deal with online because some characters depend on timing to beat it, but balancing a game around a stupid laggy version of it is bad policy.
Who’s your character? Maybe I should put up a big post about How Your Character Deals with Lariat.
As far as I know, every single character can ultra a blocked lariat if you do it after blocking the second hit (except Gief himself).
Every single character except Gief.
And if you don’t have ultra, do your sweep attack at the same time (or a low attack into a special).
If Gief is holding away from you after you block the first hit, just do a far-reaching special at the right time (Viper knuckle, Abel CoD, whatever).
The only reason I could see you think that lariat is too good is if you only play online with laggy connections. It’s hard to beat there, just like Ken’s LP uppercut is hard to beat at times. Offline it’s a pretty easy punish.
Wait what very specific situations are you talking about that geif needs to be in to use lariat? The situation of your opponent doing anything other than block low? Damn that never comes up.
And not one of his top 5 moves? Are you kidding me? That move alone is what makes geif scary for me.
I play Fei, and yes I can block it and punish with cr.HP or wait till after I’ve blocked all the hits and ultra but I just find it stupid that I can see him do it close / mid range, be out of range of getting hit, and I can’t just walk up and do ultra. It beats my DP, it stuffs just about everything I do. Not to mention it hits most of my crouching attacks for some reason. I don’t think you should have to do something with a low profile to beat it.
I honestly don’t see how you guys don’t think the move is a little ridiculous. Yeah it’s beatable but some of the shit it does just doesn’t seem right. The move didn’t do all that shit in ST. I guess my biggest thing is that just blocking that move is a huge risk because that’s also geif’s SPD area. I think something that you have to take that big of a risk against needs to be easier to punish. I don’t care if it saves the same functionality and if it’s really only useful in certain situations when you know it’ll hit then the ability to punish it shouldn’t matter. I just don’t like specifically blocking it and trying to punish only to have my punish get stuffed by one of the random ass hit boxes it has.
Would it be acceptable if it only hit crouchers on the first hit?
Oooh oohh! Bison! I know how to deal with it when not at close range. After blocking the first hit at close range, sometimes my crouching attack whiffs or I get hit out of crouch on the second spin.
I agree with david, I don’t think lowering his health is going to do much, but I definately agree with removing the ability to hit crouching opponents.
Ding! For you.
The reason it’s what makes Gief scary for you is that you’re bad. I don’t mean that to sound offensive (well, I do, it’s just, I also mean it as conversational fact), but you have ways to punish. In fact in your very own very next paragraph you mention ways you can punish it. Are there ranges where it’s hard for you to deal with? Welcome to LOTS OF THINGS. Lesson: don’t stand in those ranges! Those ranges are ranges I have to actually set up against good players. If you’re giving it out for free, don’t be upset when Gief players accept your gift.
And yeah it’s not like it was in ST. Like MANY THINGS for MOST CHARACTERS.
You read what you want to read, don’t you?
Name a situation Fei can’t deal with lariat.
I think Fei has some of the best tools to punish a blocked or whiffed lariat, frankly.
Wake up. It beats everything I can do getting up.
Also the fact you guys have to have a god damn FAQ on how to punish the move is proof enough of my points. I’m done here.
