Education works, yes. But in the height of confrontation, it won’t do much (when the other person is fuming at you for having stated your mind about something). When I deal with my younger family members (age 10-17), I tend to explain to them that racism is wrong and all people are different. Considering, in my family, “blacks and chinks can’t be trusted”. I usually get an earful when they find out I’m hanging out with people who are anything but white. Thus, I try to explain to them that the family’s attitude isn’t right, nor accurate. But I don’t see how confrontation, verbal or physical, helps in ‘the moment’.
