No man sky is being made by 12 people, they’ve been at it for about 2 years now. I think it is most definitely possible. that just isn’t the normal business practice right now.
Rather than mobile killing consoles, my point is that consoles have been tightening the rope around their necks with each incoming generation and their supposed new revolutionary graphics. At this point, videogames are stuck in the same hole than movies: graphics have become so costly to develop than now tens millions and several years have to be invested to produce a single game and, since upping the price of the game accordingly is out of the question, they have to aim at the broadest audience possible (aka dumbing down the games to levels never known before) and even then profits are poor.
I used to believe that Nintendo was foolish to compete with consoles with subpar graphics but now I blame Sony and Microsoft for the sorry state of videogames: while the last three generations of consoles have been nothing but “better graphics” they have priced out every developer out there and now we have titles as year as we can count with our fingers. When even the companies that have the money to fund the videogames are retiring from the sector, the writing is on the wall. I agree that blaming Konami as shortsighted or stupid is missing the big picture here.
This path of extreme risk aversion is painful to watch. Why do people get into the Japanese industry now-a-days? What happened to video games being art and talent driven. JP companies are pandering to the LCD for returns.
The industry went down a path where tiny projects yield giant returns and you want to get in on that, that’s fine. But what happened to letting developers work on their stuff sometimes, too? I read all the time about how developers in JP companies want to make so and so game but we rarely see them do it. I never see this for western devs to the lvls of the JP. I can definitely see Square-Enix and Capcom heading down this same road, eventually. It’s gotten so bad that they even cut humongous corners on the AAA titles they do release.
metal gear is obv ending with kojima leaving the company
silent hill already killed off
what other AAA franchises does that leave on console? shitty 3d castlevanias (good riddance).
this basically just confirms they aren’t working on a secret suikoden game, or that if they are it’s not going to be on console or be a AAA budget release.
maybe if the company doesn’t spend an eternity making high-budget games it might do them some good.
