Just speculation but it probably has to do with the boss-men of JP companies all being a bunch of out of touch, stubborn old dudes, and their stubborn-fueled, poor decision making is perpetuated by a culture in which conflict is pretty much avoided at all costs. I mean it doesn’t really take a genius to figure out that JP video game companies are behind on the times. There’s been reports of Capcom Japan and Capcom USA butting heads about community support in the FGC, with the latter realizing that community presence is a big factor for success but the JP wing being stubborn about it for quite some time. Remember Nintendo Japan wanting to NOT have Smash streamed at Evo but Nintendo America supported the community? Yeah. I understand that the video game industry is a lot rougher to make big games in these days, but being completely out of touch the technology and the times is a problem (same could be said about a lot of subjects but that’s another point).
Well, shit like this makes me think that other than fighting games and Persona 5…I most of the good games I should be looking to are on handhelds. It IS true that the most recent Castlevania games, even the portable ones have been pretty bad. And now we won’t even likely get the bad ones.
I guess I should just go play Portrait of Ruin, and Suikoden II and V to remember the good times.
Konami mistreated their staff, they shut down castlevania, cancelled silent hills when P.T showed so much promise by bringing back “teh horror”, they sit on tops of IPs that could be brought back, they shitted on kojima, they shitted on the fans and they shitted on their legacy. Not surprised that they made this announcement even after saying that they will continue with the MGS series to pacify the fans. Screw them. Hell, a lot of japansese game companies are either messed up or are a shell of their former self. Sad to see such companies crumbling since I grew up with them, but companies like konami deserve to be shitted on since they did not give a damn about us. People were saying that EA is the worst company and shit, but at least they are not fucked up like konami where under-performing staff who are game devs have to do cleaning of toilets and shit. No one should work for such companies and endure their BS. Hell, their PES series is also not as good as FIFA. It will be a matter of time when that game gets axed as well.
Not gonna lie, that new Suikoden game getting cancelled still hurts a bit inside.
Instead of abandoning consoles completely, couldn’t they just make games with a smaller budget and release them as digital-only games? They’ve done it before.
Damn, so no metal gear rising 2. I’m glad to have just simply gotten it at all, but that sucks. I think platinum couldve taken mgr 2 to some crazy heights considering what they did in a short amount of time with metal gear rising.
I think there was a definite shift between the PS2 and 360 generations and it has become a bigger problem over time. For whatever reason, games became much more expensive to make and a lot of them lost their souls, or what made them actually fun to play. Games stopped being cool and engaging and fun and started being “cinematic experiences” with little variety because companies couldn’t take risks on making the money back. A lot of franchises I used to love have either shit the bed or stopped making games:
We went from Final Fantasy 7-10 to the turd that was 13
Resident Evil 4 to Resident Evil 6
Ace Combat 5 to Ace Combat Assault Horizon
Suikoden doesn’t exist anymore
Timesplitters doesn’t exist anymore
I don’t think it was worth the tradeoff. If consoles never moved on and we had just stuck with PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation I think that would be awesome. It seemed back then it was much easier to make your money back, companies could afford to take risks, and the market was in generally better shape. I would likely still buy PS2 games in 2015. I can’t think of any reason I’d want to buy a PS4 or Xbone.
It’s not all bad of course - the 360 gen saw massive growth for indie games and there were definitely some cool ones made. It’s just a shame that midrange budget titles mostly disappeared and the big budget titles became stale and not enjoyable for the most part.
This entire post ignores the fact that, between the PS2/GC/Xbox generation and the 360/PS3/Wii gen that iOS became the world’s largest gaming platform and that DLC became a major part of the revenue stream for publishers.
This was bound to happen, I’ve been sayin’ this way-before companies even voiced interest in movin’ towards mobile. I swear to God, people said I was fuckin’ loony. Even people on this very site. 'Few things I wanna say/reiterate now that a major company has finally went all in on this and ceased AAA production.
As a huge Capcom fan back in the day, they were a the biggest indicator for me that the Japanese industry was goin’ in this direction. I honestly can’t think of a company without a console who’s had more hits, classics, and cult classics than them. The amount they have to work with is staggerin’, yet they don’t bother with even a 1/4 of their library. That’s a red flag. S-Enix started doin’ the same shit and Sega’s been doin’ it all along. Konami doesn’t even have half of their backlog, that’s at a noticeable level. Notice now, companies over there have significantly shrunk their rotation (3 or 4 major franchises) and have added just enough room to make the “new game” every now and then. But the new games will all be trend hopin’ attempts. Namco-Bandai and Koei-Tecmo are lookin’ like some of the last bastions of the major Japanese console software industry. Nintendo too, but they act fuckin’ stupid.
Bandwagons are only so big. Everyone can’t fit on the bandwagon. All these Japanese companies thinkin’ their just gonna go mobile or put laser focus on mobile and make millions are gonna be disappointed. Western companies have been bankin’ on that side of the industry for years, you folks are kinda late and monetary gains in that industry have kinda peaked. The size of the industry will grow exponentially in the future, but will profits? Everyone’s jus’ gonna make what scares developers about consoles, the same for mobile. It’s just gonna happen faster cuz everyone’s breakin’ their fuckin’ necks to get in on it. Makin’ mobile games that turn profits aint gonna be cheap forever. It’s quickly not becomin’ cheap.
DLC became a standardized because the online architecture made it much more feasible + higher development costs meant they needed more ways to make money from each game.
iOS didn’t replace console gaming nor is it a direct competitor. They’re two different markets with some overlap. But mobile gaming taking off isn’t the reason that many AAA games have become bland and samey, or that franchises like Suikoden are disappearing. I suspect higher development costs over the last 10 years have had a lot more to do with that than anything else.
It’s not like the problem is “everyone only buys mobile games now so sales aren’t what they used to be.” The problem seems to be “it costs us way more time, money, and staff to make each game and so the investment really has to be worth it.” So those cool games with smallish fanbases get cut out, and the more established franchises do less and less interesting things.
I’m probably just getting old. But for me SNES-PS2 era was the golden age of console gaming. Not sure we’ll ever have that again though the rise of indie developers gives me some hope that there’ll always be a game or two I can pay attention to.
It’s clear the guys in charge of this company at the moment have no respect for their fans, employees or legacy of great franchises.
Let them kill themselves.
At least the other big japanese game companies who are sinking at the moment , are making an effort to struggle to bring us fans new games and or doing something to stay afloat to try and be relevant in the gaming industry.
Konami seems to have just thrown in the towel. This is like saying " I give up and screw everyone else , let’s go all pachinko "
There are plenty of loved IPs under their belt , so I really I hope they sell them to companies who can do something with them and show them more love.
