I like them both, but one more than the other, regardless of whatever DG has to say about the scene :P. It’s to each his own here, really. Fanwise, I don’t understand K9999 or want him in any KOF game. He’s not a real rival. Just a Akira rip-off with Wyler-like capabilities. Kula was enough.
Well, I must say that I’m a 98 Head(because I’m a SNK OG player) for life because it felt more together graphically and musically. It wasn’t just repetitive animation, but good, planned backdrops, and better color. I couldn’t deal with watching Hon Fu cough so much while I’m fighting, but I didn’t mind the Korean guy sticking his head out the window. I actually got to see how my team was doing. Ready for action, or bruised beyond repair. That was fun. Look at Leona, she just handed to by a scrub and she still looks like she got raped after ralfsexx. You can’t fake that.
Fightwise: I enjoy it because of the character balance and options given. In 02, it felt like a lot of favoritism kicked in on the roster. Mai got hella reduced in 2k2. And Takuma has invisible moves. I didn’t know if he was making the moves, glitched or just whiffing. Don’t give me that “He’s a master, so it could happen” BS. I don’t agree with it. Something I really couldn’t ignore, even though 2k2 is played alot more in the competitive world.
If 2k2 looked better, it’d get more love from me. Still, it is deep enough to take seriously. Those hidden DMs would look better on OG SNK, anyhow.
…btw the entire NESTS saga had 4 man teams.(99,00,01)
…that went well.
I think they were trying to say that he achieved such control over his attacks that he could strike you from a distance with just the force of the attack, rather than having to touch you physically…like in various anime where a physical attack is stopped, but something WAY off in the background is fucked up a second later from the force of said attack.
oh god, shut the fuck up emil. you know what i meant.
I just find it aesthically displeasing for me. The way the the KOF combo engine works in itself, makes MAX Mode look silly to watch.
SNK didn’t even try and mask it with a some flash like in Street Fighter and various other Combo Cancel games.
I was a bit harsh, its not bullshit. It just doesn’t look good to me.
Regardless of what people may say, presentation matters alot in fighters (there animated fights). KOF98 just looks a whole lot better to me.
98’ also manages to maintain a decent look when played at high level. KOF 2002 doesn’t.
Of course, this is only my opinion. So what the does it matter anyway.
kof 2002 gameplay >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> kof 98 gameplay
it’s a no contest
it’s a no english
and what gameplay? how in god’s name is the gameplay even remotely different from 98, aside from being even more lopsided and silly?
Whatever.
I prefer 98’ over 2002’.
In actuality, I don’t have enough experience in
KOF (never really like them, only 95, 98 and XI).
So you ARE probably right.
However, this thread was about ‘personal’ preference and I prefer 98.
Simple.
it’s all a matter of personal preference and feeling i’ll forever say this
The Neo-SNKer’s battle cry.
hahaha retardness started
It’s a retardedness that knows how to type. Therefore, I win.
Also, I gave my reasons why I think 98 is better.
[]better graphics
[]better sound
[]better presentation
[]better animation
[]faster paced
[]excellent roster
[]better hit detection
[]the same gameplay, only more solid and not marred down by a fundamental lack of effort

moves that are actually useful and don’t feel arbitrary
Woot. Someone did it for me. You Rock!
This is how I feel, I just was to lazy to make a list.
Give Rengoku a break on his grammar (its better than most posters here), he’s Italian.
I would, if he weren’t fanboying in every single damn SNK related thread.
Except neither of those reasons have any support, and some of those points can all be summarized as one point. “Better presentation” is vague. “more solid” is also vague.
And it’s highly questionable that kof98 is faster paced. You could argue that kof98 is slower because there is too much focus on footsies and fireball zoning.
I will probably agree with the last point though…moves in kof98 generally seem to have more uses, many moves in kof2k2 only seem to be useful in combos and nothing else.
I generally don’t like the music of either kof2k2 or 98, with the exception of kof2k2’s Psycho Soldier theme, Kyo’s theme and Clark’s… My favourite kof music is probably from kof2000.
…except they’re not vague. When I hit someone in 98, it felt like a hit: crisp, clean, and easy canceled into the special/super of my choice.
In 2K2, supers are harder to do unless you’re ABC, hits lack omph, and their collision boxes are just… a bit odder than usual(if I have to be wrist deep to hit a cr.a, there’s something wrong).
And…fuck, how the hell is better presentation VAGUE? LOOK AT THE TWO GAMES SIDE BY SIDE!
GRAPHICS
[]98 - lush, colorful character sprites, backrounds with fairly varied color palettes
[]2K2 - a color palette that belongs in an Edvard Munch painting, cloudy skies everywhere, lack of contrast makes everything look like they’re made of of mud
SOUND
[]98 - Excellent tracks and SFX, nearly every character had their own theme, all of them MEMORABLE
[]2K2 - weak hit SFX, universally loated music and voice actors, all memorable for the wrong reasons
The only fathomable reason play 2K2 is because the NESTS characters are in it. If they were in 98, which game do you think they’d be playing?
i’ll bypass the retardness i don’t intend to argue with a 15yo
pretty same roster as 2k2
finally they removed the american sport team…it really sucks
yeah, really you gave a look at yashiro’s crouching C, daimon’s crossup B and some other shits
which move have bad detection in 2k2?
'98 gameplay is all about footsie, CD CD CD CD CD
the most impressive combo you can pull out is
C fwdA special/DM
2002 is mainly focused about rushdowns (except for some character)
and combos…but i’m sure that the average player here can’t pull half of the combos i know / can pull off
obviously kof98 have rushdowns too but in 2k2 they play a wider role
you sure don’t know that in 98 a lot of moves have years of gaps and some characters (yashiro/urayashiro uber alles) can punish from distance
only few moves are usable/abusable outside of combos pretty like in 2k2
in kof 2002 a lot of 98’s retaliations were removed
Word.
Players with good execution don’t worry about this. I don’t have ANY problems cancelling anything, even K9999’s C, f+A, moon DM…maybe cancelling the Kim stomp using the bug. So yeah, this point is weak if you just have good execution in general.
Ok, so now “presentation” includes graphics and sound, which you already mentioned (so mentioning this again as “presentation” gives the illusion that there are more better things about 98 than there really is). Also, you didn’t explain how the colors of the sprites in 2k2 are worse than in 98, nor the sound effects. Which voice actors did you find to be bad? I for one, thought Athena’s new voice actress was far better than the 98 one. In fact, probably all voice actresses for Athena before kof99 (which is kof2k2’s voice actress) totally don’t match the character. I can’t recall exactly what other voice actors changed.
well in Japan, the only NEST character used a lot is Kula. And in Mexico, Angel is used. I don’t think this is the main reason they play it.
There must be some better reason why kof98 is starting to die out while kof2k2 has not (although I guess one of the reasons is that kof98 is 4 years older).
