they were never popular, too stereotypical. That’s what I heard despite the fact the characters are used a lot and I’ve never heard complaints about the character designs so I dunno where’s that coming from.
They can have a story, with Nakoruru’s team not involved in the canon. KOFXIV can either be a dreammatch with bosses (like KOF 2002), or a new saga episode with a fanservice team that isn’t linked to the story, kind of like a bonus. but considering the Ash saga introduced some over the top things, time travel and stuff is possible.
and KOF technically started as a dreammatch, that at the sametime was the prologue to the Orochi saga, so KOF94 is canon in the timeline.
and if I recall, didn’t KOF 2000 have strikers that were totally over the top and from various SNK universes? and yet KOF 2000 is a part of the NESTS saga.
I’m far more concerned about the overall quality of the game than who the fuck is in it.

A thing to keep in mind is that Garou and KoF are not in the same timeline. I mean if that roster leak is true and there’s weird time travel bullshit then anything is fair game, but if that’s not the case, the Kim twins would be about 8 years old and probably wouldn’t be in the game. Same goes for Rock, they’re literally children in the KoF timeline. The older characters from Garou you can bullshit all day long, you could say Marco Rodriguez is 25 in this game because he’s old in Garou, etc.
Geese is listed on the leak being in the same team as Billy Kane.
There’s isn’t a need for time travel bullshit. KoFXI’s midbosses came from different series in wildly different timelines and had no impact to the canon.
The fact that they came from different series means a lot actually. They could be whatever age in whatever year in another series, but those things could be completely moot in the KoF timeline unless previously established, like with the Fatal Fury series. There was no crossover with Kizuna Encounter or Buriki One in the series previously to XI so those characters had no actual relation to the KoF timeline. Also I really hate 03 and XI when it comes to canon discussion because it’s very obvious from the sprite reuse and pulling from Garou that they were made at the time of SNK being absolutely broke as fuck and just not giving a shit. Terry is Garou Terry, which makes fans happy, but makes absolutely no sense in the canon, because Garou Terry is a full 10 years older than KoF Terry is, but here he is in 03 and XI like nothing fucking matters because who has money to make sprites in this economy. It bothers me and it must have bothered people at SNK because XII and XIII he goes right back to trucker hat 25 year old Terry.
The AoF characters and Geese have been aged appropriately in the KoF timeline for KoF, not for the original series. KoF has a different timeline than either game, and those series’ timelines are independent of KoF.
