KOF XIV General Discussion - King of Fighters XIV Arcade Ver. Burn 2 Fight cabinets from Taito!

The large amount of new characters is a good sign that SNKP is actually trying to come back as a COMPANY, rather than just a KoF factory.

They’ve been riding off simply re-releasing the same old games (with the occasional awesome update/remix) for almost the entirety of the 2000s. Their game division had to fight for the company president to even admit games were worth making, while Pachislot was the real money maker. When they released KoF XII and XIII, they prioritized taking characters back to classic looks and roots, hoping they could hit nostalgia pangs, and maybe even have to say a farewell if the game wasn’t successful enough to keep their members employed, and working on games.

Now they’re setting up to return in a bit way. They have an ENT. business set up for licensing and other entertainment purposes. They make a new KoF that has a returning cast greater than the size of most other fighters entire rosters, and they have enough new characters to fill a MOTW or AoF2 size roster on their own.

There’s plenty of still-relevant games out there with dear characters like Blue Mary (a personal fav), Whip, Yamazaki, Heidern, and Shingo. (Not enough with Oswald, though!) The existence of a XIV doesn’t mean those games disappear. While the essence of KoF has been “relive those old days over and over!” for a long while now, the TRUE essence of KoF is to celebrate an active, lively SNK as a company, bringing characters from all genres, designers, and fandoms into one big, fun fighting tournament. It’s an umbrella that houses a great variety.

It’s great to see a roster that looks like it’s from a relevant, lively company again, rather than one that is constantly reliving past glories, slowly embracing an uncertain future (that would likely end in closure).

Well sure, returning characters are well loved and nostalgic, but come on, even returning characters had to be new at some point.

This game has a fantastic mix of new and old characters, and the new characters it has look really solid. I understand that you don’t seem to like change, but you have to realize that SNK has to remain fresh to be able to actually advance as a game company.

KOF is supposed to be a crossover, after all. It’s kind of sad that Terry, Ryo and the gang are essentially refugees from their own dead series.

36 total characters (this includes 3 DLC EX characters and Saiki)

KOFXIV:
31 returning characters
12 brand new characters
5 characters new to KOF
2 new bosses
The 50 characters are all unique (no EX versions etc.)

So yeah, I don’t see a problem.

Well, the thing with SFV is that it was announced to take place in the past so people probably thought it was a great chance to include alex(not to mention the lack of memorable characters in SFIV).Also, I’ve never heard of a character in 98 ruining things. Do tell.

I think no one is want make a competition here. I’m just glad we are receiving good fighting games this year. I will support both franchises because i love this genre.

It mainly highlights the large cast, stating that a total of 19,600 team combinations are possible thanks to the 50 playable characters.

Kof 99 failed because of nest? likewise for 2000 and 2001?
Bullshit, I for one dont like nest characters, i dont like whip i dont like kula i dont like maxima i dont like K but nest also gave us ramon vanessa jhun, so you have to take the good with the bad.
Those games did not fail because of new characters, they failed because they were shit due to stupid experimentation that failed, ie strikers shitty pow modes shitty amour modes, shitty presentation and the games being glitchey as fuck and so on, dont just blame it on new character’s, that’s a lazy cop out

you know why kof13 was a success? because it was a much better game than 12 it has nothing to do with who is in the game, people will play the game regardless.

Just like people will play 14, so what it’s not got yamazaki big fucking deal, when was the last time you saw yamazaki in a game and thought " yeah this guy has got it" shit man i was bored of yamazaki by 98.
Mary another, i’m glad she’s nowhere near this game she’s being stinking up kof for far to long.
You need new blood to keep the game fresh and interesting, if you just recycle the same old shit year after year people get tired of it.

Rock is garbage in every SNK game he’s ever been in. Bottom 3 in Garou, bottom 5 in NGBC, and I don’t remember the tiers of the MI games exactly but Rock was also shit in those games. Even in his best game, CVS2, he’s mid tier, which in that game is just barely above unplayable. Rock is garbage and I hope he never comes back. People who fanboy over Rock don’t even play the games he’s in.
