Actually there is, during Power Blows (single use desperation moves you get at 50% life) right before the final hit where you can choose where to send your opponent flying.
That said, in DOA, they darken the whole damn screen instead of just the backgrounds.
That said, the actual in game graphics (outside of cut scenes) actually dial back some effects. Here are a few more shots from when I tried to capture the above for comparison (yes, these are still during the Power Blow animation, hence the lifebars are darkened).
I do like how SNKP seems to be finding their own style with projectiles, rather than just ripping off the way other companies have done such things in 3D. I always felt like their 2D games had a unique personality for this, so their 3D ones should too. Thanks for posting the screen, @AT_Ryo_Sakazaki.
I Agree @Allstar_Apologist, I’m also loving Maxima’s updated look. Chest Cannon especially looks better than ever before, and he still has solid details (Like how the gauntlets open when he does a Vapor cannon, ejecting an ammo shell upon impact.)
It’s also kind of surreal comparing SNKP 3D to KoeiTecmo 3D. I think they’re among the best at Anime / Realistic Hybrid styles, and they know how to make very efficient models that scale and run great on a variety of hardware (such as getting great results on Vita ports of games with 10s if not 100s of character models on screen.) For a modern large cast KoF to have graphics comparable to them, especially when they’re a company that maintains quality through constant iteration (like old SNK and KoF), is pretty impressive.
If you watch all the trailers released so far, from the 1st to the 7th, it’s impressive how much better everything has become. Not just graphic wise, but also with the quality of the presentation, the cuts for the trailers, the music, voice samples, everything. Some people say it was a poor idea to release the first one, but I actually disagree: They’re making style and design upgrades that other games would have had to wait for sequels to achieve, over the time of one in-development project. In a world where Kickstarters, IndieGoGo’s, GoFundMe, Patreon, and other such companies exist, there’s something to be learned and earned from getting to see a product develop from humble beginnings into a fully refined work.
The details on some of the clothing is really uncanny in some motions. Take beni’s “Thank You” whatever it is taunt winpose, if you look closely his damn leather pants “crinkle”. That is some nice detail.
I don’t think it’s actually animated “Crinkle”, just a trick of lighting in the actual 6th trailer video, that gets smoothed out to look like animation in a Gif, due to lower colors / compression.
I like for my mains in past games to be present in the sequel. In previous Guilty Gear games I played Pot and Baiken. If Pot wasn’t there I would have skipped Xrd as none of the other available characters fit my playstyle.
@Monkey66 “Jin” is the family name of Chonrei and Chonsu. They’re brothers.
The leaking says the 2 characters aren’t suppose to be them, but there are many that think it SHOULD be them, since Tung was suppose to be training Chonrei.
KOFXIV’s graphics don’t get the credit they deserve. I get that the initial reveal is very dissapointing and had the game continued to look like that all throughout development the criticism would be absolutely valid. However the game has gone from looking like a HD PS2 game to something very comparable with high end fighters of last gen. Here is another comparison between KOFXIV and DOA5.
Both games are doing a good job representing the anime/realistic hybrid. The best thing about this is that KOFXIV isn’t even done and if it continues with this rate of improvement it will be more then good enough on the graphics front by the time it’s released.
