Kneel Before SRK - The Man of Steel Movie Thread

I’ve read all of the old Supes stuff and up until the reboot flashpoint. Grant Morrison Supes I did not care for because I don’t like Grant Morrison. First off what I appreciate about Superman is he is an ideal, he has to be. But it also makes him out of touch with reality. I like him in Justice league stuff but I’m a Batman guy. I don’t like the current edgy Superman and I hate the underwearless costume in book. It’s just package Superman now can’t unsee it. Kinda like gay Alan Scott. It just seems unneccessary. The thing that really gets me though is lack of Lois and pushing Wonder Woman, which is nothing new but also feels unnecessary, and “…Superman no longer fights for truth justice and the American way…” was so retarded I nerd raged. Anyone who has read anything about Superman already knows that he has protected **THE WHOLE PLANET EARTH FOREVER **. Yeah it creamed my corn. That being said even though Supes aint my man I do appreciate him and the Movie looks Amazing. I haven’t been excited for a Superman Movie since Superman II. Yeah I’m old but it’s the truth and I like how in the new trailer he did what looked like the flying around the world bit that was in every single superman movie. I want this movie to do really well. Kevin Costner as Pa was also really cool just like the above poster mentioned.

This is just swell. :coffee:

Everyone always gives Supes shit because “he’s not as cool as Batman…” Well, no fucking shit he’s not Batman. Batman is a more human character(when idiots aren’t writing him as Batgod who can beat anyone) with actual vulnerabilities and weaknesses. However, for all that “cool shit” Batman does and has, there’s one thing Bat-fanboys always ignore-- EVEN BATMAN LOOKS UP TO SUPERMAN.

Superman is the ideal hero. He doesn’t do what he does out of tragedy or duty. He’s not looking to get paid or to avenge his parents. He does what he does because it is simply the right thing to do. He is the moral compass always pointing in the direction of truth and justice. He sees the good in everyone and looks to their potential. He knows what humanity can become and strives to be a symbol of that.
I just wish writers and haters would be more cognizant of that facet of his character, rather than all the moaning about how powerful and boring he is. He’s only boring because he is written as such.and these same bashers are the ones who heap praise whenever Batman takes down a virtual god with a few minutes tapping on a keyboard and a billion-dollar battlesuit

Ya’ll niggas need to stop hating on Batman, people prefer Batman because he’s a more relatable character. The fact that ANYBODY could be Batman with enough dedication and training is the appeal of the character, can’t really say that about Supes since he’s a walking God/Boy Scout.

That’s not a knock on Superman tho, he is a great character when when the writers understand him. Just most people tend to gravitate towards character they can identify with. IJS

Superman is also human in some of the ways that Batman isn’t. Superman doesn’t have a fortune. He doesn’t have his own industrial firm at his fingertips. He doesn’t have a harem of beautiful femme fatales. Superman grew up on a farm. He goes to work. He has a boss. When he’s not saving the world, he’s a nobody.

I think that’s why the two characters are so interesting when paired up. They’re two sides of the coin in terms of both fantasy and down-to-earth elements. Each has what the other doesn’t, in both categories.

It’s worth mentioning that a real life Batman would either be dead or have sustained several chronic injuries within a week of active duty. :coffee:

Depends on who you ask on when it comes to being relatable then. So I’ll rephrase my previous statement: (To some) Batman is more relatable.

“anyone can be batman”

did i really just read that

With a shitload of money, proper training and dedication you could. Of course you couldn’t do alot of the outlandish shit Batman does, but alot of it is within the realm of possibility. And like Good said, a person would probably be dead or injured in a week if they attempted to be Bats in real life. And I never said it’d be easy. kanye shrug

thats a lot of ifs.

Anyone could be clark kent-all it takes is just being a good person

I see what you did there…

maybe im just out of touch, but I find it weird that being a billionaire hell bent on a twisted revenge kick is considered more relatable than being someone who does good because its the right thing to do

The adult Clark Kent is fake. I don’t read the Superman comics (familiar with the other media), but how can the average person relate to a super-being who chooses to act like a doormat. It’s condescending, not relatable.

Batman (with decent writing) is supposed to be the “Rudy Ruettiger” of superheroes, which commands more respect among us normal humans.

We’ll be doing this shit all night, so you win, good sir. I concede

you really find clark kent to be condescending? that doesnt even make sense. hes not doing it to be snide

I remember the speech in Kill Bill. The Clark Kent persona is Superman’s perception of the modern man (a beeyotch). Bruce Wayne (the real Bruce who dons the cape as well as upholds his necessary alter ego) is a testament to the human spirit-- an example (fictional of course) of how far you can push yourself using your god-given faculties.

Kent isn’t a bitch. He’s precisely the man he was raised to be–competitive, intelligent, and humble. If he’s meek, it’s because that’s how he was growing up, not out of mimicry. The meek Kent is no more an act than the outgoing, tough Superman is. Whatever the significance of Bill’s speech is, his dissertation on Clark Kent is superficial at best. Maybe–just maybe–the speech is in the movie to reveal something about Bill’s character, rather than simply to depart from the plot for a few minutes of geek-talk.

Wayne is a ridiculously implausible example of how far you can push yourself with god-given faculties. There’s nothing wrong with that implausibility, but never forget that he is just as much of a fantasy character as Superman is. As I said before, even granting the unlikely level of education and training, the fact that Batman does what he does for more than a week without being dead or permanently bedridden is a testament to the fact that he has de facto superpowers. The whole “he’s more interesting/relatable because he’s a human being/realistic/whatever” is a fig leaf for Batfans who don’t want to admit that their character is just as outlandish as any other costumed hero.

Okay, like I said, I never read Superman.

Most of your criticism of Batman’s implausibility is the fault of DC and American comics in general. We all know that most of the big-name comics have gone on for about 5-8 decades longer than they should have, at best. Even in the comics, nevermind other media like cartoons and movies, it’s been suggested that Bruce simply cannot be Batman forever, and other people wear the cowl once he retires. Either way, the message survives the “ridiculous implausibility” of the Batman story, which is still more inspiring and applicable to normal people than growing up to discover you’re a god on Earth.

I think most people forget how “human” Superman is. He grew up as a farm boy and pretty much wanted to have a normal life. It is out of self decision that he chooses to become a hero. He was already “super”, if it wasn’t for his strong moral background he woulda been a Guy Gardner kinda hero or even a super villain. I’ve read all the post-crisis (Byrne reboot) comics until The Trial saga and one story arc that I enjoyed was “The Day of the Krypton Man” where it takes Supes out of his human context and show him more “alien”. I think the contrast is good (specially his encounter with Gangbuster where he pretty much tells him that he doesn’t care about humans anymore) and helps people to realize why he is how he is.

I don’t know what it is but new superman just doesn’t feel the same, sorry I thought I prefaced with In my opinion but I just don’t like how Morrison drags things out then revisites them years later and tacks stuff on. His writing always feels like how videogames are now in a DLC craze to me for some reason. Look at Final Crisis for example and everything that came out much after the fact when no one really cared anymore. At which point yeah I got it, but it felt like you had to if you wanted the whole story and then when you got it, it felt like oh ok that was it? I don’t think I said anything about All Star Superman though.

In regards to Batman Superman pairing I did think the Batman Superman Comic was awesome. It was great to see misadventures as they both ran through some crazy setups, alien worlds, and other dimensions together that was pretty good.
