King of Chinatown Documentary - Justin Wong - Empire Arcadia

lol word. I bet youngns bought this documentary because they wanted to see Triforce turn into a flop within 2 years. thats pretty fucked up

I literally laughed out loud when Gootecks flat out told Triforce that the sells pitch sounded shady. He seems like a character. I’d be down to watch that documentary.

I can definitely respect Triforce for wanting to be his own boss and not wanting to work a 9-5. He seems really passionate about EMP. There is focus which is good, but the bad side out of that would be delusion which is what I felt the film portrayed. I think not being stuck as some nobody who will never be remembered in the history books is ideal for any man, but at some point you just gotta suck it up and let it go, but he may be in too deep at this point to just give up. Pretty sad in a way. I’m getting flashbacks of the Bulletball man here.

Leaving Empire seems to be one of the best things Justin could have done for the most important person which is his own damn self. I had to shake my head when Triforce was talking about them meeting their quota for the year. 52k more or less on the back of what Justin did. 52 grand or so that Justin could have pocketed himself. I’m not saying that Triforce somehow manipulated Justin, because Justin is a grown ass man and he can make his own decisions, but still 52k is 52k.

Overally I enjoyed it.

This documentary shows how much of a fool TFGM really is, aside from wearing a power glove and legally naming himself Triforce.

I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure that part where triforce is pitching to gootecks is edited to make it look like that “shady” line was a direct response to his question. If you look at the cuts you can see that wasn’t all one fluid convo. I’m guessing they talked more about the industry in general trying to lock players down etc and he said that line then (although obviously he DOES think that about Triforce too). I could be wrong, but all the other times i’ve seen gootecks talk to triforce from when he stayed at the arc and his other media shit, he seemed pretty respectful of the dude. Even if he was thinking it I couldn’t see him just straight up calling him shady like that lol. And yeah 52k is 52k but you gotta remember, triforce was the one that went out and secured those sponsorship deals, something Justin probably wouldn’t have done himself, so it’s not like he would have made any of that on his own. Virtually none of that 52k came directly from tourney winnings.

I might be the only, but I actually ended up having a little more respect for Triforce after this. I used to talk the same shit about him just being a mooch off of good players, and the glove and shit. But honestly, how many people out there have the balls and drive to try and go out there and build a business for themselves. I ran my own business for almost two years and that can be a lot of work. Maybe he has ‘delusions of grandeur’ but to me that’s just vision. You gotta be able to believe you can do it if you’re ever gonna get anywhere… if you fail it looks like delusions, if you succeed everyone thinks you were a genius : / For every business that succeeds there are a ton that fail. I know guys that have failed more than once and go on to build a successful business.

If there’s one thing that’s clear it’s that he really went after all this lacking a lot of business knowledge. But who knows, maybe he learned from these experiences and will try again. Personally I don’t see any shame in taking your best shot at something that big and failing/going back to a day job. Better than daydreaming about it and never trying. And yo, those dudes at the arc really were developing some serious skill over there. Maybe due to triforce’s efforts, maybe not- but something was working over there. It just wasn’t in the best interest of some of the players.

There was a scene where those other guys were implying that TFGM encourage these guys to play more games and less school work. That’s not progression at all and shows a clear lack of focus and priority. His current situation is pretty much a product of that. I heard he still owes $10k to the game store owner that they were holding Battlefield Arcadia in Brooklyn, and that place closed down too. Is he even gonna pay up or run away? Shady.

Someone clear this up, but I don’t even think majority of the Empire members have finished high school or college; maybe just a GED.

This is not the way to go. Look how far some of the west coast players have come along? Sponsorships and flying around the world.

True, I’ll give TFGM credit where he tried to help catapult Justin up when SF4 came out which is the main focus of this documentary, but I don’t feel that it was the sole factor in starting these things.

Justin leaving EMP was the best he did for his gaming career. Hell, it was the best thing a player has done for any player period. Him getting that big sponsor opened so MANY MORE opportunities for other fighters to get sponsorship. Him and Gootecks has done a lot to push the fighting game forward. Mad props and thanks to both of them.

Just look at all the players who have a big name sponsor now. Most of them aren’t even the creme of the crop in terms of player skill (cough Gootecks cough). What they do have though, is presentability. No big name company is going to stick out their name to a “shady” person to represent their brand. Having skills only gives you visibility. Too many players are still holding onto their “old” arcade culture. It has its charm, and it’s fun as hell to watch sometimes but you’re not going to get a corporation behind it. Big corporations just don’t understand it but they don’t have to. They have the money.

Was just thinking back on how much I hated on JW back in '09/10 despite his skill. Maybe it was getting away from EMP’s influence or moving to the West Coast or is now representing a big name, I don’t know. Now, he seems like such a nice guy. He hasn’t been doing too well the last few majors leading up to Evo. I’ll be rooting for him this year to take Evo.

Just my 2 from a pot/stream monster.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I agree with everything he did, or that nothing he did was shady, I’m giving him credit where (imo) credit is due. Remember that guy who said the stuff about encouraging kids to do less schoolwork etc, is something he made clear that he ‘heard’ and didn’t know first hand. So we’re getting this probably like…3rd, 4th hand or lower. IF it’s true, then yeah that’s something he shouldn’t have been doing when it comes to kids in high school etc. When it comes to college, I say these are adults and can make their own decisions good or bad. I gotta hold them responsible for their own decisions.
He definitely did some good. I think a lot of players in the arc got better because of the environment they provided, some got more exposure because of his efforts. But in the end he just didn’t know how to run it as a business that could benefit both himself and the gamers in a FINANCIAL way. Seems like he always had to chase his tail on back taxes, rent, and other operating expenses so I’m guessing the players didn’t really see much, if any, and got tired of it.
I think part of it is shadyness like you said, and part is just that the business was a mess from nothing being stated and put in contracts up front, and just general lack of business knowledge. There was no way that could survive…

well…gootecks got sponsored as a media/PR manager, not as a player. So he definitely had skill in the aspect of gaming he was hired to do.

after watching this movie, i really don’t understand why any good player would let triforce formally represent them. it’s so ironic that he’s trying to build a “professional organization” but at the same time wears a power glove. have you guys seen his facebook? he has all these pictures of him posing like a badass with a power glove lol it’s like he’s a cosplayer or something. that’s not professional. no professional should call themselves an “emperor”, imo. how do you expect people to take you seriously?

but i think the greater reality that this movie shows is that fighting games are not at that point where people can be making a real living off of it. yeah, you can get sponsored and travel the world and have great experiences and make amazing friends along the way, but being a street fighter champion is not going to provide real long term financial stability.

While I’m not disagreeing with you, I will say that when you are a professional and you have power, you can do whatever the fuck you want.

Dana White can walk into meetings in a t-shirt and jeans and meet whoever he wants. Yea, he doesn’t dress professional most of the time but people around him don’t care because he’s got power.

Of course, 2 totally different aspects in terms of business but you get the point.

yeah i totally get what you mean hahah and yeah i agree, people who are high up can be badass and do what they want. but yeah, triforce is not in that kind of position lol

The fact that he has Triforce legally in his name is probably enough to turn people away from dealing any sort of business with him.

Please tell me that is a joke.

The fact that triforce is actually his name?

holy lol

Yep, I’ve heard about it and I thought it was a joke. In the documentary he shows his state ID with his middle name as Triforce. He says he doesn’t drive and won’t drive so I’m sure it’s a New York State ID.

That verifies it.

Triforce is a straight-up herb.

And yet no one would say shit to emp’s face, fact. I at least respect the hustle. people have been saying they were going to disappear for the last there years, yet there they are.

Also, only herbs still use that word.

So you suck his dick as much as he did Justin? You’re bottom of the food chain? Damn doe.

They haven’t progressed anywhere either compared to everyone else in the past two years, so they’re pretty much stale and pigeonholed.

the sad part is that EMP actually has great players. they should find better representation
