^Yeah, and thinking back to it, Glacius’ ancestor was also a slight redesign to, so meh. I’m totally willing to forgive and forget if they bring back Riptor(since Cinder’s apparently back too)
Right now it’s looking like Sabrewulf by default since he’s full rushdown. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Thunder take over that title though when he’s revealed.
Yeah rushdown characters tend to take the lead early on (just like Marvel 3) until people figure out which characters have the tools to reliably keep them out. I like that people I’m talking to are afraid of Glacius because it shows they are making him good. It looks like people will have to work to get in on him and that’s the sign of a strong zoning type.
One thing I do wonder is if they’re going to give characters health values or not. KI never really had health values and I feel it’s a dumb way to balance a character, so hopefully characters stay balanced by tools and archetype and not health.
I think health values make sense depending on the game. I mean, in KOF, even Grapplers have a ton of movement options to avoid bad situations so that is why everyone can have the same health and still be okay. Same is in 3D games.
With some 2D games like SF, BB, GG. Getting in can be harder on bigger bodies, so they need more health in order to compensate. If Zangief had the same health as Ryu, the match up would be much worse for Zangief given that he has to work harder to approach Ryu. Plus, if someone with as many tools as Seth or Akuma had the same health as everyone else, that would be scary.
SFIV is a game where the balance issues are based on health. Seth is given no health because he can do one of everything outside of the footsie game and has the best DP in the game. Zangief has big health because he has no walk speed and has a huge hurt box etc. It’s basically an excuse to make characters limited or make characters that are mindless good outside of their health. It’s why MikeZ made Skullgirls without health values also. If you just give people good shit you don’t have to worry about health.
The characters that can just do everything, but have low health are really tired archetypes in this day and don’t really allow an interesting balance between character types. Not much reason to pick other characters when you just have one character that does what you need as long as don’t block with your face and drop combos.
@supertroll, after listening to those sound clips it’s funny to hear that Cinder was going to have 3 other potential names. I guess Cinder was the cleanest and easiest to use. Heatshade would be a weird ass name for him.
Has there been any indication of the launch roster size? I was over on the DH forums and you got dudes begging for a 6 character cap wtf? I can’t see myself paying full retail for a game with a cast that small.
Nothing has been confirmed, but I would expect 8 to 10 by release. You have to remember that this is a pretty new concept where you buy the game in full first, and then get more characters over time. The official release date for the system hasn’t been announced yet and it could be not until after December that the system actually releases. Which gives them enough time to throw out 8 to 10 or more for a release. They’re making stages for each specific character so that will take a while to flesh out also.
Basically, if you like Killer Instinct just pay in full, you’ll get a decent roster at start and then just collect the free DLC that comes after. Which considering this will be the system’s killer app for a while, expect the roster to expand well over the next year.
If the launch for Xbox One releases and the roster isn’t big enough for you, just buy a character or two you like until the roster is large enough for you to purchase the game. I wouldn’t really go that route though since it just seems more complicated with how you may end up paying more money if you buy individually.
Yeah paying for characters after you’ve paid full retail for a game is a thing of the past after Capcom’s run in with the BBB. Just lay the money down and get the rest of the characters as they come.
That’s the way it should have been done. Make the full game more expensive for those that are testing the waters with free Jago to entice them to receive the rest of the DLC with one payment. If they realize that they only like 2 or 3 characters they can just purchase them and still pay less than retail. This makes it easier for your casual NBA Live junkie friend to ease into fighting games again. Doing so without killing his wallet on something he’ll probably only play for a month if he just buys the full game and ends up just playing one character. Which since it’s digital download only he can’t go to Gamestop to resell it either.
Generally a much more fair way to nickel and dime that entices people to buy the full game rather than nickel and dime those that have put full commitment into the game.
Plus, since it’s a digital download fighting game, costs on production will already be cut due to not having to put the games on expensive ass Blu Ray discs. So expect a full payment for the game to be less than 60 bucks, I say. The packaging, shipping to a game store and Blu Ray material is a big part of what sends game costs hella up.
I don’t follow NRS games too much, but now I know why people bitch about them. Nickel and diming people that already laid the money down for the game just doesn’t seem ideal as far as keeping customers. That’s what it sounds like the guys at Double Helix get.
I’m sure NRS gets away with it just because people don’t care enough.
Yeah Namco has the philosophy of “characters are like chess pieces and necessary to play the full game”. They don’t want to sell you chess pieces so they’ve done away with paying for DLC characters. Hopefully the trend Tekken Tag 2 and Killer Instinct are paving where paying full price for the game should include all of the chess pieces becomes more regular. It’s just since it’s a digital download there’s more freedom to release the pieces over time rather than being choke holded by deadlines for a disc release.
Namco and Double Helix have the tournament player in mind and don’t want people that purchase the entire chess board to not have access to tournament useable pieces. You should be able to practice and utillize those characters without throwing down extra money. Only if you’re not committed and just want to try out one to a few characters should that be an issue.
